OK at the risk of sounding ignorant....what is the function of the magnets??Wouldn't the same effect be possible if you just glued these discs together??

The fluid must pass through the centre of the discs and out at the edges. This requires a gap between the discs. The magnets add the correct gap between the discs, and make for easy assembly of them. Additionally, the magnets add to the magnetic coupling effect needed to drive the disc pack.

Small stainless or plastic washers could be used, but it's more hassle to install them.
