  • one of the best novels ever written

  • "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If

that is granted, all else follows."

  • still not as good as BRAZIL. by the way - make sure you check out BRAZIL

  • The answer to 1984 is 1776!!

  • @NHIGGSTER they say it goes further as 1717.

  • dam this sucks, i hope my children dont have to go through anything like this. spending thier lives stuck in a dinner line being served spam and bread,

  • Same razor for 6 weeks? It'd be as sharp as a butter knife!

  • Its ironic that London has the largest CCTV network in the world today.

  • You're probably too young to know it, ringsideskateboards, but this People's Republic of America bullshit started LONG before Obama.

  • very interesting movie, book was also a classic. very thought provoking

  • D:" I'm reading the book in my reading class, In MY head Winston has a more seductive tone to him. Not a withering old guy.. Oh well...

  • omg saame but its so dragging so is the movie.. kinda

  • @organizedchaos113 : Only if you have the attention span of an infant.

  • theyll shoot you in the back of the neck but i dont care down with obamanoids, err i mean i love big brother and all the cheerful sheeple!

  • @negresssongstress

I'll have to thank them for such a painless death.

    lol!

  • The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

    mr Churchill understood

  • It's ironic that the Outer Party members listen to reports of the over production of food while not enjoying any of it. George Orwell's ability to bring out the deeper meaning behinds trivial things like these is what makes him, and the book, great.

  • is that RAB C NESBIT at 7:30 ??

  • Its Gregor Fisher, he plays Rab C Nesbitt

  • sad it would be to know that the greatest test for men is to prevent the downfall of men itself.

  • I wish my big brother was like this one!

  • fuck oibama

  • he's doing nothing for our country.he's most likely enjoying the intention of the media.wish it wouldve been hilary

  • @ishcarly i know this comment is 11 months old but it must be said. hillary would make an awful president. possibly worse than obama.

  • It takes an incredibly strong person to march to the beat of their own drummer, and I agree, less and less people seem to be capable of it. G. Orwell one of the greatest writers of all time and all I can say is double plusgood!

  • 2+2=5

  • Oldthinkers unbellyfeel Ingsoc, doubleplusgood comrade. duckspeak ingsoc goodnews.

  • i agree w/ u gents. i have been weaning myself off the t.v. junk for some time and now ,, infomercials and the like turn my stomach.its sad that we led ourselves into brainwashing,, but i do love movies, they too are agenda filled junk, its like heroin not that i would personally know ,just a comparasion,,,, spell?

  • the only different between us and this movie is we dress better

  • soon, we will be even worse than these guys. Actually, we are already worse. We are deluded into thinking we are free. Fascism is probably more evil than socialism.

At least INGSOC won't slaughter their own population.

But evil is still evil, even if it tries to hide.

Freedom does eventually win. The "ruling elite" also want to be free, but they have trapped us in the process. When we see too big a gap, people will act. They may free others, or they may become the elite that once ruled.

  • @soccom8341576 Do you actually know what socialism is? Thought not.

  • @seany505 Ownership of the means of production.

  • @seany505 And actually, a transitional state between capitalism and communism; the latter representing government or centralized control of the means of production. Do I get a gold star? :)

  • @seanr456 It is the public/common ownership of the means of production. Not centralised ownership, that is only through the application of nationalistic or statist socialism.

  • @seany505

Point taken. It wouldn't kill you, though, to have a little bit of a sense of humor about it. Are you German?

  • @seanr456 No I am not German, but I am half Dutch. And as you know the Netherlands is quite similar to Germany. Btw my other half is British.

Yeah sorry about being a bit too serious sometimes, I am just very passionate about defending a system which I know could make the world a better place.

  • @soccom8341576 you sir, are an idiot whom doth not no what he speak. a year ago

  • @hippi28 ...aaaaand everything else.

  • @hippi28 sorry, but the fact that you can broadcast that over the internet without fear is proof that there is a difference, recognize REAL tyranny, don't try to make it up.

1984 has done its job beautifully, we enjoy little freedom in comparison to the men who lived on the western frontier during the days of "Manifest destiny", but you cannot argue we aren't freer than the poor saps in this book.

  • @hippi28 Lol, sad but true

  • Standard of living my ass

  • our standard of living will go down like hell they engeniered the economic collapse for a socialist takeover they take a whole lot of money and spent it in a wrong way than this will inflate like fuck and than they use carbon texes to stop production and consumption we are being put in a state of fake scarsity like in this book

  • agree

  • wtf id kill myself if i had to live like that.. like if i went there tomarrow or something its brainwashing

  • we're brainwashed everytime we turn on the tv

  • you're absolutely right. i moved into a new house three months ago and got used to have no television. now, everytime i watch TV at someone else's house, the brainwashing becomes more and more obvious to me.

try not watching TV for a month and how stunning the results of that are.

  • i gave up my tv 2 years ago end i have not problem

  • right on, mate! \o

i believe a world-winde, non-violent revolution would start when a massive portion of the population boycoted traditional media. it would start and people wouldn't even notice it... think about it. =]

  • it never happend

  • @ramonesaudibert

    It's already spreading.

  • yet you are on the internet, please luddites deus ex machina

  • Ha Ha

    War On Terror

You are either with us or you are with the terrorists

    Mission accomplished

    Axis Of Evil

  • this is double-plus good

  • haha

  • is that gandolf playing smith??

  • you mean Ian McKellen, nah? This is John Hurt playing Smith

  • you cant understand 1984 if you didnt live in comunism

  • that's why we're watching it - to know a little bit more about how it terrible it truly was.

  • Brothers. I'm afraid that I must report all of you. This is not approved viewing.

  • lol

  • CANCER CURE = HEMP OIL

  • I read the book... it was pretty creepy if you thought about what it would really be like to live in that alternate london

  • Really great movie.

  • The thing about this movie though, is that somebody who has never heard about it would have no idea about all the details unless they read something about it.

    It's not very explanatory.

  • You lost me you Savage Genius you!

  • it can`t be . the people can`t get something like this it is imposible. we are people we think we fell. this is a tirani

  • I forget, why didn't Smith want to eat that large chunk of Meat at 5:39?

  • because he isn't brainwashed and realises, unlike the others, how digusting actually is.

  • For just eating meat, no that wasn't it in the book. It was something else I know that.

  • Think you must be mistaken. In the film him not eating the meat simply signifies the he is thinking, unlike the others. In the book he does eat the meat. "...he suddenly discovered that he was hungry. He began swallowing spoonfuls of the stew, which, in among its general sloppiness, had cubes of spongy pinkish stuff which was probably a preparation of meat. Neither of them spoke again till they had emptied their pannikins. "

  • NEVER FORGET that people have lived like this... sad, real sad... it may be a movie based on a novel but history has proven such things all to true.

  • Yes, I'm sure everyone remembers those commie fucks in the soviet union, know this however Cramsa People are still living like this in Nations like China and Iran.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:00 - Shaddupp ya hag!

  • i like brazil a little more, though this is brilliant as well

  • I think John Hurt was the perfect choice for the character.

  • So do I.

  • this is not a movie this is real life.this is your future europe america.maybe africa to.

  • i dont see the black haired girl liking winston shes 26 and he is 39 and looks much older

they should rewrite that part of the story

  • Its depressing how they broke Winston in the end... I actually thought O'Brien was going to help him...

  • That was really really really cool how they made her gradually look older as he got a better look at her!

  • Wow, that guy talking about the dictionary sounds like the politically correct thought police.

  • the book is 1000times more depressing

  • i was surprised that this movie really adhered to the book and was actually good. One of the best film adaptations I've ever seen. O'Brien was spot on.

  • this is happening now wake up

  • wow this is extremely condensed

  • Wait a sec... Winstons voice sounds familiar.... Has he done any voice work in video games recently? he sounds a bit like one of the prophets in Halo...

  • That's John Hurt, he's been in a lot of things. One of the more recent roles he played was chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta...

  • Decent film, good book so I hear. Problem is most people who read 1984 think they are so insightful and non-conformist once they have.

Yeah, it warns against totalitarianism and the dangers of stalinism etc, but can people not just take it as it is? A Novel?

  • I don't know about anyone, but that grub doesn't look half bad. It looks like cream soup with nice chinks of ham. If I were real hungry I'd eat it especially since it looks like that's all they serve. I wouldn't call it "double plus good" like that dumbo, but just "so so good".

  • They seem to have gotten the excercise part right :P

  • Read the book a couple of times, heard the film wasn't so good. Might give this a go though...

  • one of the best movies. depressing as hell, but that is the way this planet is going.... sad...

  • Christ, can you imagine if every day of your life was the middle of February.... FOREVER.

  • 8:10 looks like the production line for the Sturmgeschütz III

  • are there any major differences from the book?

  • it cuts out some stuff and rearranges it, im not done wit da book yet, this movie helped me understand it a bit better.

  • haha me too.

  • Very significant ones, in fact. At first sight it is a warning against stalinism, but after reading it a couple times, you understand that it is a master piece about the nature of power.

  • aye, indeed. forget all the politics bullshit, it aboot self perpetuation of power, "customer lock-in" so to speak. People cant conspire or rebel if theyre every source of information and thought is controlled. whaddafuck we gunna do...

  • Wikipedia on 1984 "...The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasize that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere."

  • when julia looks at winston, it made me think of the Kings of Leon's "Charmer"...."shes always lookin at me...she's such a charmer oh no"

  • Americans should read this book before it becomes banned

  • haha i know, but hey we wanted change

  • They should rename this movie "January 20th 2009"

  • Yeah, cause that would make totally more sense.

    Jackass

  • it would, cause oboma is destroying the constitution. Dont believe me look up car czar, fairness act, and how he wants to tax us on how many miles we drive. Im sorry but driving is a right, he has no right to do that to me.

  • I agree.. fuck a driving tax.. driving is one of teh few things I have left free to do... I can hop in my car and drive wherever I want.. this city starts to piss me off?? im leavin.. taxing that would limit my freedom, especially for people like me who move around the nation every 8 months to a year

  • didnt hear from you people when bush was tearing upthe constitution with the patriot act and wire-tapping and censoring the media, odd that you are all crawling out of the woodwork now.

  • should have spanish subtitles ( ! )

  • Death to taught police - free Ernst Zundel (imprisoned for 20 years for not believing in the Holocaust). Orwell's 1984 is brilliant !

  • 20 years? Zundel will serve less than 6 for denying and proprogating denial in the Holocaust. "Not believing" in the Holocaust isn't why he went to jail, he tried to convince others of the same thing which is illegal in Germany. Also for a neo-Nazi, he is a rather bad Nationalist (running from his military commitment and stepping foot in Germany for over 40 years). It's sick you would even connect that man to Orwell...

  • Obama supporters should read this book and see this film.

  • why?

  • i agree, go to infowars(dot)com to free your find

  • fucking disgusting

  • rank poon @ 9:57

  • we are reading this book in school right now. hahaha :]

  • And that, my friends, the reason why I don't use intrnez sp.

  • Dude, what?

  • we read this, brave new world, F451 and a few other great books back when i was in school I wonder if they even allow this material now.

As for the definition of what america has become it's been a corporatocracy since congress yielded power to the fed back circa 1910.

  • "Do you all believe in the one true God in the Bible? "

If I did, then I'd probably shoot myself.

  • If I didn't, the I would t\as well.

  • What God? I believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden, don't you?

  • Do you all believe in the one true God in the Bible?

  • One's technology isn't dependent on capitalism or socialism, Nazi Germany was technologically advanced state but war allows a nation to boost it's technological level, Even today the U.S government hides technology from the civilian populous.

All this power America has is an illusion because now America requires foreign lenders to stay afloat.

"Terrorist" is an empty term to create fear in order to justify a never ending corporate war, Freedom is an illusion. True freedom is not government.

  • True freedom is a republic where the law is true.

  • We don't lead the world in technology, Japan does. We are not the strongest Military in the world, China Is.

The Goverment allows illegals to enter in mass for cheap labor. "That which They can't Export, They Import"

We Server a Lunatic Goverment, And he is a ungratefull master. Welcome to the New World Order and Economy.

  • I thought when the Declaration of Independence was sighned,it was written under the foundations portaing toThat the people give theGovernment power to keep society inOrder, am I correct? If so,that would mean to take away the power of theGovernment,we all would have to quit our jobs, not pay taxes, peacefully protest and boycott government related institutions,and/or services, and ignore the IRS. That, consecquently, will put usAll in jail, and make theGovernment lonely, thus descending USinto anarchy.

  • Please excuse my lack of spacing, THANK YOU! =)

  • even your former head of the CIA awcknowledged that bin ladin is a "freedom fighter". america raped the living shit out of the middle east way before the middle easterners did anything, so fighting back makes them terrorists?

  • Freedom Fighter, Bin Ladin maybe, but he is a man of influence, a man who has openly spoke out against US (and all of Western society), and has executed attacks against the US. Whether a, terrorist, freedom fighter, or yoga instructor, he is a danger to the US and needs to be snuffed out.

  • You understand you're just repeating neocon propaganda that's completely preconditioned you to be fearful of invisible enemies?

It's not that hard to do your own research and find out who bin ladin really is. He was a CIA asset in the 80's. WE pay the real "al qaeda", more like Wahabbi Muslims, to do our real dirty work.

  • best book ive seen

  • What does war have to do with socialism you stupid?

  • Things like this are not science fiction. They happen in places like north korea and they also happened in former fascist countries like mine, Chile

  • Newspeak is already installed in our societies because culture (antique one) is less and less taught, and because of stupid laws repressing freedom of speech...

  • This is a good movie. Thought they managed to make the book really come to life a bit ^^ Thanks for posting it

  • Wow, you really no nothing!

  • "Looks like meat, tastes like meat. But it isn't meat at all! Doubleplusgood!" One of the funniest lines in the whole of the film lmfao!

  • drinking at work? Thats one of the few freedoms they have lol!!!

  • Victory Gin is my favorite

  • :) In my country there actually is a cigarette brand "Victory". I'm smoking one of these right now.

  • It's a great book, just leave it at that.

  • 1984 was written as a satirical warning against militant totalitarianism. Not so much against any form of Marxist government. Orwell actually described himself as a "democratic socialist". The true issue he is pointing out in '1984' is man's increasing willingness to throw away freedom in exchange for safety and being part of the 'herd' in society. Orwell felt that ultimately humans would not be able to cope with their own destinies

  • Orwell made this book as a warning if the socialists follow the ideas of Stalin

  • If anyone follows the ideas of totalitarianism.

  • Communists, Communists were the ones that followed Stalin and Stalin was a Communist. Communism is about as similair to socialism as it is to capatilism

  • socialism is a hyper-capitalist monopoly controlled by the state. that is why i hate wal-mart. just wait until they get a bailout. wink wink

  • Cool, this is USA in 20 years.

BTW, you can't come over here when it does happen,as you make your bed so you must lie in it.

  • This is not the USA in 20 years - it is already here and much more advanced than the technology in 1984 was.

CCTV, triangular positioning of cell phones and suchlike pretty much owns any tech seen in this movie.

The Thought Police are only now being rolled out.

  • Get your guns ready. It's time for the second Revolution.

  • i would give more thumbs up if i could.

  • Facebook is big brother

  • Read the book: Rules for Radicals by Saul D. Alinsky

  • yes quantanamo bay and cape david are most definately the ministry of love

  • The real life Oceania,the West,has enough consumer junk.Orwell got that wrong.Guantanamo

    is the Ministry of Love.

  • the point of socialism is to put the working class (anyone who works for a wage, and is not in control of the means of production) in charge of the state and economy, where they can directly control their own lives and fates. In Oceania, it's the other way around (i.e. extreme state socialism). I hope you all realize this.

  • There have been many, many socialist régimes in history, and boy do they look like 1984.

  • not necessarily. the ones most like 1984 are most probably: Albania under Hoxha, Romania under Ceaucescu, NK under the Kims, China under Mao, and USSR under Stalin. All the others were just beauraucratic and authoritarian.

  • That's a lot of strikes against socialism.

  • you are all missing the point that 1984 is not just another condemnation of state socialism and Stalinism, but a warning about trends becoming ever more visible in the western democracies.

  • Well romania(trust me, i know...) wasn't that similar to oceania.Ceausescu was not only a figure but the actual ruler of the country.Much like fidel castro in Cuba he was a true dictator as opposed to Big Brother who was a mere idea, a representation of the parties.Whether Big Brother did or did not exist was of no importance, what was important was that the people believed he existed and followed and trusted him blindly as he "performed" the party's actions

  • In the U.S., Big Brother is whoever is prez; B/B does not fear a so-called free press or YouTube. He knows nothing can subtract his power. "The Inner Party", Dems and Repubs combined, is one made of two, is in lockstep with B/B.

Most of us are "proles"--having only the basics of life and no hope of displacing the

Capitalists who in our case provide the monies

to the Inner Party. Big Religion is the modern day Thought Police, assuring cookie-cutter thinking about the Big Brother in the sky.

  • Communist regimes, there have been no socialist regimes only communist regimes

  • That look on their faces when they saw the food was priceless.

  • I saw a vag...
