I personally like the screaming. it shows the crowds really into the performance. I went to Wicked in May, and I was waiting for everyone else to start screaming when Elphaba rose, but noone did and it was kinda boring.

Yeah I think it varies by the audience...I saw it once with SJB and nobody screamed when she went up, then I saw it with Marcie Dodd when she did her bway run and when she took off flying everybody went crazy.

and about the screaming - yes, it is a bit much, although it didn't sound nearly as bad when you were actually there - and you also have to understand the mood... it was very emotionally charged that day.. i think people literally were just like... not in control of their emotions LOL usually it drives me nuts when people do that for real... that was the one day i didn't mind.

The screaming doesn't seem to bother me as much as it does the other people, you can still hear Sho and it just doesn't bother me, and weirder still, the majority of the posts on this are about how terrible the screaming are, if you go to Eden's 12/30/07 show or Kerry's last before Broadway, there was ALOT more screaming and it was louder and more throughout, and there isn't alot of complaining there.

Sadly, I never got to see "RENT", but I think as fas as musicals go, "Wicked" and "Newsies" come out on top. You are SO right about screaming. It really takes away from the show itself. That's why I think, sometimes, the "movie" version of musicals are better. :)

well you could see Rent now actually..both the movie and it live on Broadway. They filmed the last show on Broadway and released it on DVD. So you could watch them both and get both experiences! :)..For me personally, minus the screaming of course, the stage production will always beat out a film production!! :)

You have to give it her, this was her last performance and she wanted to go out with a bang. If you listen to her regular performances, she tones it down and it sounds perfect. It has the right richness behind it, that few elphabas have. Yes, she changed the song quite a bit in this instant and I do think she went overboard a little, but she was a great Elphaba.
