Now the Snow Queen has been changed to Frozen, which is even worse than Tangled. King of the Elves, however, seems to be considered an acceptable title. Not misogynistic at all. Absolutely not sexist.
disney deal you are meant to make girly movies i agree Tangled is a name that would atractt a lot of men just as much female but the thing is my lil brother watched nearly all the girly titled princess movies xept Pochathnas and Mulan bring it back disney you know you wanna do it
Disney has not lost it touch, it's back and better than ever! Not many know that the title was also changed because it seemed to, fluffy. The title tangled is about how rupunzel and Flynn get tangled together in this adventure.
John Lasseter of Pixar saved Disney from a slow, grisly death! You can totally tell that he produced Tangled, Pixar's stamp is all over it. Disney had been putting out crap for the last 10 years and it was way past due that they changed with the times. I was very pleased with Tangled, glad to see they got one right for a change!
It's just a damn TITLE, people! Stop it with all the drama already. I don't see why some feel the need to whine about "Disney prostitutionalizing themselves" or other mumbo-jumbo I've heard recently. The film itself is great so just stop it already.
I too can't see how Disney could make another movie more faithful to the original tale. Not just because two Rapunzel movies would be redudant, but because his one is already close enough; it must be as faithful as "The Sleeping Beauty" was. (note: I haven't seen it yet; there is no Thanksgiving holiday where I live and the release was delayed a month.)
maybe they (disney) just wants to try changing things up. Just because they're making one movie a little bit differently doesn't mean that it's a bad thing.
The difference is that Rapunzel sounds too girly as oppose to titles like SnowWhite, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas and Mulan. Rapunzel sounds about as girly as Cinderella does. Yes, Cinderella was a hit but that was in the 50s, which are totally different than the 2000s. And we all know how not much of a film for boys Cinderella was.
@ClubPenguinEntertain Rapunzel gets pregnant (Disney would never do that. Rapunzel is 17/18 in their version.) Woman (Gothel) finds out and kicks Rapunzel out of tower. Man comes back, and is "pushed" out of tower by Gothel. He becomes blind. After a while, they find each other again (I think the man heard Rapunzel's singing.) Rapunzel cries, and her tears heal the man. See? Nothing like Tangled except Rapunzel and a few referances.
@gobais53 this is a true Rapunzel. The original story was too graphic/sexual for kids, and it was boring (IMO) Woman kidnaps baby. Girl (Rapunzel) is locked in tower. Girl's hair grows really long. Man (actually a prince, in the original,) stumbles upon tower and they fall in love.
It looks pretty good. The animation is very beautiful and is intended to blend the fluidness of hand-drawn animation with 3D. The music sounds good too. I hope that the movie does feel more Disney than Shrek when it comes out.
I wasn't fond of the name Tangled at first but after seeing behind the scenes and trailers on it the title makes sense. Sure Rapunzel is what I still call it, but its a good story, and no offense to your theory but Aladdin also did not focus soley on the woman, because boys need to be invovled to, and it was a huge hit.
Calm down we don't need to sign anything, take a chill and enjoy something new,
I promise it won't kill you, you may not like it but change is good.
There isn't really a problem with them changing the title. What matters the most is soul of the story. The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle book weren't the names of the main characters, but they were still good movies that appealed to all. And by your own logic, then "tradition" says it should have been Belle, not Beauty and the Beast. I think it would've been fine as Rapunzel, but I'm a girl, so I can't speak for the guys. If the story's good and the title relates, then I'm fine with it.
I think that they were going for what most people got out of Shrek. Either way the movie would be great but I must admit that I DO have a hard time remembering the title.
Judging by all the trailers I've seen, it looks more like another Shrek type movie. The humor appears stupid. Lasseter and Co have done some great work..I don't think this is going to be one of their best. Of course, I'll have to see the whole thing, but so far I am not anticipating a great feature..The name is of no consequence, the content looks uninteresting.
@disneyitsasmallworld I don't get it, its nto for disney? They created it? Besides I think it looks great, and I don't think we have to follow every fairytale to a t, if so Cinderella's foot would have been cut up, Snow White's mother in law would have danced in hot shoes.....do we really want to see that no! I prefer a happy movie to something that dark and gorey.
GO TANGLED! Mwahahah :) LOL I love the movie already I have the same feeling I had about Aladdin, its gonna rock. NOVEMBER 24!!
The little boys are stupid for ignoring The Princess & the Frog. They should end up in Pleasure Island and turned into jackasses. Sorry, I just want TPATF to be a successful of the return of Hand Drawn Animation.
Personally, I am deeply angered that it was changed from my childhood fairytale title 'Rapunzel' into something that screams; "I'm a lame cartoon title" called Tangled and watching it, it didn't dawn on me that it's about her, and i thought it was another dreamworks title.
@Shanazaki Not all DreamsWorks films are failures. Their latest film was purely amazing in my opinion. But that's beside the point; I'm replying because I agree with you wholeheartedly. Rapunzel is also a close favorite of mine, so it's a huge disappointment to see that they changed it to something that appears to have no fairy-tale quality. It has potential to be entertaining, but I get the impression it's not going to be as well as it could've been if they followed the original tale.
@Persona100Duh Wow, okay no offense the original tale is fav of mine if I only have to listen to it read a few minutes at a time. Basing a movie around a girl locked in a tower with nothing to do and not getting out is boring, and the fac tthat in the tale the prince goes blind its just not that nice over all. I like the rewrite, and I believe you're wrong about no fairytale quality, I see great things happening, and I am more than eager to see the movie.
@traceyblaze No offense is taken; but I believe that everyone has a right to their opinion on this topic. Also, I said it APPEARS to have no fairy-tale quality. I'm not completely writing it off because, for instance, I thought How to Train Your Dragon was going to be moronic and it's now my favorite film of all time so, as you say, it may be good. But I disagree on how basing it solely on Rapunzel may have been a flop.
This movie looks dumb... but they should have kept the old title. This will be another failed attempt to modernize Disney. Tangled sounds like an adult film to me...
Please unfrieze Walt Disney so he can stop this movie from being a piece of crap...
this movie looks pretty dumb. but i think sticking to repunzel would have made it less of a "modern" mess.. Tangled sounds like an adult film to me...
@Gigakoops Is there a problem for reaching out to a wider audience than starry eyed five year olds? Because really if you have a problem, go jump off the highest tower, no kidding really don't. But come on relax, grin, laugh, and realize that this movie you may think is dumb, I don't, I think its going to be great, because of the fact that it does reach out to adults, boys, and girls alike. Flynn is funny and charming, and Rapunzel you could just hug her till she's blue in the face.
@traceyblaze (Darn little comment boxes...) I felt it had more potential BECAUSE she was in the tower; if you have good screenwriters, they can do ANYthing with just her being trapped. It's great that she gets out, but it didn't necessarity mean it would've been boring with her there for a little while in the film. It can set character, mood, etc. just as fine. 'Geri's Game' for example: no dialogue and it's basically a bunch of screen shots of two men playing chess but it won numerous awards.
PATF may not have made as much as DIsney wanted, but because "Princess" was in the title was certainly NOT the reason. I mostly blame those stupid Chipmunks that came out a week after it was released--The Squeakel was such a horrible movie and yet somehow made so much money!!! >_<
@TheITinFIT That's a very good point. Some films ARE just overshadowed by others. PATF was easily better than the Squeakel, in my opinion. But also, we must take into account that Disney films are just not as strong as they used to/could be. Much as I hate to say it, the only things I find enjoyable from them anymore asides from their Classics are anything they do with Pixar. PATF was a good entertaining film in its own right, withal, wasn't close to kissing distance to their other crown jewels.
I think it could also be that Avatar was showing on the same week or before or after the Princess and the Frog and that more people went to go see it & it made a lot more money than the Princess and the Frog.
I´m still going to see the movie, but I was hopping for a more classic aproach. I mean, the music of the trailer, "Trouble" by Pink?? Anyway I´ll wait and see. Also not really loving the new title.
it is inevitable that change will happen since times change and nowadays, this is what kids and teens like
and i am super duper excited for this movie
i mean, look at princess and the frog, they stuck with the old structure but it wasn't such a great success. i personally thought that it could have been better and you know what, if it was named "rapunzel" i don't think i would be nearly as excited for it as i am now b/c it would give the impression of sameness
@fmabdo Exactly! They're breaking the mold on this one, and coming up with something fresh. Maybe Princess and the Frog had bad timing, but they also had problems iwth the storyline, Tiana and Navien have all their adventures in 3 days? Two weddings, and the whole frog thing? Are you joking? They still make it in time to get Tiana's building bought. It's just not believable that you'd fall in love and get married in 2 days time, or 3 or whatever. You get what I'm saying.
@traceyblaze And I want the prince to go blind at some point. Yes, I want it. There have been plenty of other darker settings that Disney has done that going blind is tame compared to past works. Jonas Bros. and the rest can fall in a well. Also, in one of the versions, Rapunzel weeps and her tears fall into his eyes, restoring his sight. Disney can just do that. And to note, ALL Disney couples took only a few days to fall in love. and go on this huge adventure. It's not just Tiana and Naveen.
I know I'm gonna get flamed a lot for writing this, but I'm gonna write it anyway. The reason "The Princess and the Frog" 'failed' wasn't because of biased and misleading marketing. It was because of story and concept. After years of lackluster films, I expected Disney to come back with a vengence. But no. Their return to their classic format began with a whimper rather than a bang. Compared to past Disney classics, "PATF" is mild and tame. What a disappointment.
How do you explain the underperformance of films like Atlantis or Treasure Planet? Were these films too masculine??? They would never have changed the titles of these films to appeal to girls... although some of the best Disney films have female titles; Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Mulan, etc.
@dbente I'm still not sure why Treasure Planet and Atlantis didn't get more credit. I'm a girl but I absolutely loved those two films and I agree that they never would've changed the titles to suit the tastes of girls. Their best works involve women because, let's face it, girls bring in bigger bucks. If they have a beautiful, charming girl it gets attention, which is the Disney forte.
Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to ever get nominated for Best Picture. All those princess movies were successful. Princess and the Frog is underrated and I thought that it did good at the box office. They always want the other movies to be as successful as The Lion King. Come on. Lion King was a phenomenon and those don't happen everyday. PATF might not have as well because we are in a recession and it's expensive to go to the movies. Then there's the whole controversy too.
I don't like the title change at all. I was really excited to see Rapunzel, but everytime I hear something new about this movie it becomes less appealing. I agree with Hueglow that past Disney movies with female leads did pretty well. Snow White started it all and it was one of the first huge blockbusters ever. Cinderella saved the Disney animation studios after under performances due to World War II. Little Mermaid saved Disney animation and started the Disney Renaisaance.
I'm against the title too. My only hope is that Disney pulls a Return of the Jedi and changes the title back to the way it was supposed to be but at this point, it doesn't seem likely.
Oh and one thing. Don't worry. The movie will still be focused on Rapunzel. It's Disney's marketing that will make it look more masculine. (Hey, they put the ad focusing on Johnny Depp for Alice in Wonderland didn't they?!!?)
Just know that it's a newer generation of people who work in Disney Animation Studios. They don't know any better than their older, wiser grandfathers. >:\
TPATF underperformed at the box office, mainly because it was released about a week or two before James Cameron's "Avatar", which went on to become the highest grossing film to date.
This bogus notion that the title of the movie was the Achilles' heel all along is proof that Robert Iger is a failed CEO. He is managing things poorly, both in the marketing field and the business field...and is it just me, or is Iger and his ilk very "gender obsessed" when it comes to youth marketing?
i think the only reason they actually changed the title was because it was the guys pov. (which i do think its lame coming from that pov). But coming from the guys pov they changed the title so that people wouldn't expect it to be just like "rapunzel" which was from the girls pov. it kind of makes sense... although i am really disappointed that its not from the girls pov... kinda put me in a sad mood : (
On their past films (especially after the "BEST PICTURE" nomination of Beauty and the Beast at the Oscars) , in MY OPINION and observation, Disney WANTS TO WIN BEST PICTURE. But NOW (in my opinion) THEY WANT BOX OFFICE SUCESS ONLY... which means they become VERY COMMERCIALIZED!!!
I don't see a problem with the title, it's more the change of POV, the fact they've made it the Princes point of view kind of ruins the story.....oh well, fingers crossed that it does well and it can come close to "Princess and the frog" (which deserved more credit than it's been getting, and the figures in your essay make me feel kinda upset that such a wonderful film hasn't done that well worldwide. Even though it sold out every day for 2 weeks in my region XD)
I don't see any problems with the new title! If you don't like the title then just call it disney's Rapunzel! Its the same story, different title. What the problem?! You guys are making a big deal out of nothing! You have not even seen the movie!
The new title itself isn't really the big issue. The important thing is that Disney is signaling an abandonment of what is good in their movies in favor of a different style from other studios (DreamWorks and Pixar), thinking that it will be more successful in the box office. I still have enough trust in Disney to hope that the movie will be good like The Little Mermaid, but I wouldn't be sure of that.
I just don't believe that Disney can do the Rapunzel story line justice it's too complicated for their target audience. They're going to ruin this story--Disney needs to realize that not everything can be turned into one of their "Princess" titles. Also...this...turning it into something stupid like Rapunzel "the guys pov" is even more lame! Epic Fail! I mean seriously! Gah!
I love that video, because I most absolutely agree about Disney's stupid tactics on Rapunzel. Just because The Princess and the Frog did not do as well as Disney hoped, does not mean that the title is bad. I believe that Disney is not making the story for The Princess and the Frog strong enough, especially when some of the characters created by Disney are not receiving enough roles. Also, what they are doing for Rapunzel is disrespectful to the Grimm Brothers, and to Walt Disney.
Now the Snow Queen has been changed to Frozen, which is even worse than Tangled. King of the Elves, however, seems to be considered an acceptable title. Not misogynistic at all. Absolutely not sexist.

Rapunzel is much better than hearing the kids "I wanna watch tangled".

I'm still hopeful that they'll change it back to Rapunzel.

I don't like the title "TANGLED"
On their past films (especially after the "BEST PICTURE" nomination of Beauty and the Beast at the Oscars) , in MY OPINION and observation, Disney WANTS TO WIN BEST PICTURE. But NOW (in my opinion) THEY WANT BOX OFFICE SUCESS ONLY... which means they become VERY COMMERCIALIZED!!!
They become trying hard to get audiences.
Don't get me wrong. I love Disney so much.

I don't see anything wrong with this title. Of course, they would of call it The Thief and the Tower. But, let's hope this movie be a hit.

I thought the title change was retarded! Rapunzel to Tangled? What are they thinking?!
