Maiden fans tend to dislike eveything that is not Maiden. Maiden is like gods to them (or something else), just like DT are gods to me. But please dont see this as an attempt to outshine Maiden. It's a tribute. DT got a whole lot of inspiration from Maiden and it is from pure respect that they play this. Labrie maybe isn't the right one for this song, but many other. Rudess (keyboardist) does his best standing in for a guitar, you dont see a guitar standing in for a keyboard do you?
i have this problem all the time with dream theater. I love these guys, I really do! Absolutely amazing musicians, some of the best in the world.
But LaBrie is just obnoxious. You always get that feeling that he was that one friend that all the guys in DT had, and felt like they needed to be nice to him because he never shut up about letting him join the band, and if they didn't let him in, he'd have nothing but a life of swirlies and wedgies in front of him.

pettrucci is more technically talented than the maiden guitarists, but he could never in a million years write as well as them. That's what make maiden the timeless titans of the genre that they are. (John is exceptional though)
Hey all you haters...I used to play in an Iron Maiden tribute band, and all should understand how difficult it is to cover this shit. LaBrie does a fine job--end of argument. Of course, no one will ever sound just like Bruce. But just being able to hit all the notes with power is a sign of a good singer. LaBrie does that here.
Sorry DT fans. I have solid good news, and solid bad news; The good: This band is loaded with the best musical talent around. Period. The bad: They would have been a top band had they lost LaBrie from the start. He ruins this band's potential to be as great as they should be. You've all heard the saying, "The lead singer can make or break a band". ...He must be a really nice guy not to have been replaced.

dude its really hard for singers to maintain their voice man...the whole band can change their instrument but the singers cannot change thier vocal chords.. furthermore..dream theater plays song at original key...even singers like jon bon jovi drops the key coz..the highs are difficult to sing and be consistent always..most of the highs uses the mix voice..and it takes so much talent to be master in it...I dun blame labrie...he doesnt like it and its hard to sing..
@XxGGMONxX He isn´t, he is good and fits DT style music. But compare his singing, espacially live during the last couple of yours, to that of Bruce Dickinson or Russell Allen. LaBrie has no chance, he can´t hit the high notes anymore, and he constantly sounds strained. Dickinsson (who almost 10 years older!) and Allen sings live like it was on the records! Presently they are 2-3 levels above LaBrie, who with performances like this would be boo-ed off a karaoke-stage....
@nengstro Unfortunatelly, Dickinson doesn't sound so good live anymore, I believe his voice have changed somewhere before A Matter Of Life and Death, he can't sing highs with clarity as he could before, he sounds great as always when he sings low, but his highs have suffered same like LaBries. Also I'm not sure LaBrie's that much worse singer than Dickinson, he has different style, and you should see some of the old performances before food poisoning, it was insane how good this guy could sing.
I found nothing wrong with any part of this cover. Dickinson and Labrie are two totally different singers, you can't expect them to sound exactly alike.

The guys in D.T are great musicians. No doubt. But boy do they sound amateurish here! In comparison to Maiden I mean. Im stunned. They are nowhere near the flow Maiden have playing this song. James LaBrie sounds like shit nowadays. In comparison Bruce NEVER misses a note, and he´s ten years older than James. Vocals and Drums has become DTs weak part over the last ten years. Maybe time for more than one member change?

And no, he has lost what he had on the early record in terms of "his own style", last 10 years he only repeated himself, so he isn´t the best drummer anymore, if he ever was. Mangini is a better drummer, but let's see whether he can establish any creative input to DT, or if that will be smuthered by Petrucci & CO.....

@Blackened1994 According to an interview with Portnoy he played the Rev´s original part on the A7X album..... hence the parts wasnt his own and not a result of him previously being held back in DT..... I doubt he ever held back, which was one of the issues in DT. Portnoy was really dominant largely due to his OCD persona....
DT (who I love) is much more suited to covering Iron Maiden than Metallica. i'd leave the Met covers to Megadeth or Anthrax or Pantera. I'd like to see DT cover Operation Mindcrime.

Rooted in 70's rock, so don't compare his chops to Portnoy's fireworks. John Myung takes the elements of Harris, Burton, Lee, Squire, and melds them together. John's a terrific bassist, but Harris does everything with unmatched precision and ferocity; that's what makes him special. It's like vanilla vs. moose tracks. Why?

try playing some dream theater basslines, u will admit that they are much harder to play, probably some of the hardest in the world

Now dont get me wrong, i wear my Dream Theater hat backwards everyday and listen to them on a daily basis, but this was just wrong. They cant cover for shit, they can only do original material. Now Trivium's cover of "Master of Puppets" is better than the original. they cover damn good, but dream theater needs to stay original

@SpaceAce2593 Listen to their cover of "Perfect Strangers" by Deep Purple, or "Stargazer" by Rainbow.. btw a cover doesn't HAVE to be better than the original, it supposed to show the covering artist's appreciation and his\her\their interpretation of the covered material.

The guys in D.T are great musicians. No doubt. But boy do they sound amateurish here! In comparison to Maiden I mean. Im stunned. They are nowhere near the flow Maiden have playing this song. Portnoy sounds.. well not good. And the vocals are ab. despicable. But its unfair really. Cause this is one of the most difficult and taxing vocals of ANY Maiden song. Cause its constantly in really high pitch, with almost no resting points whatsoever, and also very much outside of Mr LaBries range.

James LaBrie sounds like shit nowadays. In comparison Bruce NEVER misses a note, and he´s ten years older than James. Vocals and Drums has become DTs weak part over the last ten years. Maybe time for more than one member change?

@Blackened1994 Portnoy isn´t the guitarist dude... he´s the drummer. And no, he has lost what he had on the early record in terms of "his own style", last 10 years he only repeated himself, so he isn´t the best drummer anymore, if he ever was. Mangini is a better drummer, but let's see whether he can establish any creative input to DT, or if that will be smuthered by Petrucci & CO.....

@Blackened1994 According to an interview with Portnoy he played the Rev´s original part on the A7X album..... hence the parts wasnt his own and not a result of him previously being held back in DT..... I doubt he ever held back, which was one of the issues in DT. Portnoy was really dominant largely due to his OCD persona....

DT (who I love) is much more suited to covering Iron Maiden than Metallica. i'd leave the Met covers to Megadeth or Anthrax or Pantera. I'd like to see DT cover Operation Mindcrime.

Why are people comparing the talents in each group? Dream Theater is progressive metal, it's like longer Maiden songs on steriods. McBrain? Rooted in 70's rock, so don't compare his chops to Portnoy's fireworks. John Myung takes the elements of Harris, Burton, Lee, Squire, and melds them together. John's a terrific bassist, but Harris does everything with unmatched precision and ferocity; that's what makes him special. It's like vanilla vs. moose tracks. Why?

Is that what you call a real singing ??? you gotta clear your ears and start listen carefully, I'm a singer and I've been for about 10 years, so I can tell when someone does a good job, to my ears here are the best, Geoff Tate, R Halford, Dio, Michael Kiske, Layne Staley, Michael Sweet, just to mention a few... Labrie is not even close to them he's more to Behemoth : )), one more thing, I don't care if you or the world agree, that is my opinion and am free to say it out loud.

@runtothehills29 in terms of technical ability and virtuosity, myung is light years ahead, the only reason u are supporting harris is that u probably grew up listening to him and dont want some other bassist better than him, i mean look at myung, he does eight finger tapping with one hand sometimes....and he is one hell of a chapman stick player
try playing some dream theater basslines, u will admit that they are much harder to play, probably some of the hardest in the world

@abhimuscat It never matters how much a player has technical skills over his/her instruments or how hard it i to copy their stuff; Composing music is only that matters; Both are good bass players; And Harris is the main songwriter of Maiden; Thats what he's known for. To me Alex Webster is a good bass player.
