I am from Eufaula we wish he would come back and see us every once in awhile. I met him once at the Eufaula high school football stadium, he was just coming by to see the old ball field. I remember how nice of a man he was. My dad a coach there would alway talk about the selmon brothers and how good of a family they came from. he talked how hard they had to work on the farm and haul hay. Eufaula is sure proud of the selmons.
1 last comment. leroy selmon was the 1st pick of the 1976 nfl draft (later won nfl defensive player of the year in 1979). the 76 draft had 2 time heisman winner archie griffin yet leroy was the top pick.
john mckay coached against archie griffin at least twice maybe 3 times in college and only coached against leroy selmon once in 1973 and mckay mustve been highly impressed to take selmon 1st.
leroy selmon was a fullback or running back in high school at eufala....no wonder why they won the state title lol i think dewey was the other back in the backfield.
alot of new awards added since leroy selmon played but he still to this day is the most decorated oklahoma sooner ever. switzer used to say he would occasionally visit eufala just to see if mama selmon had anymore sons lol. he did land jc watts.
Even if Buccaneer Greats like Lynch or Alstott ever gets inducted into the Hall Of Fame.....Lee Roy Selmon will be the best Buccaneer, The day he passes, It will be the saddest day in Tampa, I'll take a drive to Tampa just to celebrate his life because he was one of my Idols.
In relation to the Previous Comment, I think the following numbers will soon be retired by the Buccaneers "40/55/47 and of course 42 The late Ricky Bell!
Compare him to Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber and John Lynch, Lee Riy Selmon is Arguably the Greatest Tampa Bay Buccaneer Defensive Player, He could run, he could tackle, he wanted that ball, That's a natural Oklahoma Sooner who had success, No wonder why he was the First Buccaneer Inducted to the NFL Hall of Fame!
He will always be the Face of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the City, There's a Freeway named after him, He has his own Restraunt Franchise.....He will be the face of Tampa Bay!
Lee Roy Selmon always took a battering because of the attention he drew from opponents. Though not imposing at 6'3" & 255, he had great strength, superb quickness & solid technique. Most teams ran away from him, but he tracked down those plays too. It was next to impossible to cut off his pursuit, or cut him off, period. He played with great position, leverage & used both to keep heat on opposing passers. He could bull rush a blocker or two on one play, drop arm over & get around corner the next
Lee Roy Selmon could overpower blockers, explode by them or even finesse them. He was absolutely dominating & no defensive end in NFL was any better. He refused to be blocked & he did so much in a 3-man front which attracts so many double & triple teams (like @1:30). This helped free up his teammates, especially Tampa's linebackers. Selmon was smart, strong & quick off the ball. Selmon did it all, & consistently, always performing at a high level of excellence. He was active, mobile & relentless
I had the opportunity to personally meet Lee Roy when I visited Tampa in 2005. I called USF up and asked if I could come buy and meet the legend! Lee Roy was my idol growing up here in East Vancouver while I attended a football oriented high school. Really nice guy! Got a photo of him and I taken together. I will always cherish the moment!
Had Leroy Selmon played for a Big Market team that consistently made the Playoffs, he would of gotten a lot more respect as one of the best Pass Rushers of all time.
