I think they're really cute! You can use a sewing pin stuck into the end of a pencil instead of bobby pins. Use a nail strengthner before you start, just to protect your natural nails. Then (OPTIONAL) you can apply two coats of white polish to make an opaque starting colour for the cupcakes to POP!

hey, wee tip- if you put a clear coat of nail polish or a light color (just one coat) on under dark nail polishes, they won't stain your nails. :)
