Notice the felt liner in the nesting box. The chicks scratch at it constantly & tear up little threads, which get tangled up around their legs. The threads get wrapped up so tight that it cuts off their circulation and the leg falls off. We didn't know this when we started out, but as soon as we realized what was happening, we removed the liner. Unfortunately, it was too late. All chicks lost at least one leg, & this little fellow lost his remaining foot. Sadly we had to put him down.
