Hell with it. If I'm going to get slagged for my comments, I might as well get everyone pissed at me. On the one hand, even as a fiscal conservative (you know, the real kind that believe if deficits are bad in good times, they're worse in bad), this ad may have lost the Tories my vote.

Seriously, this ad is not going to lose the Tories your vote. The budget deficit was forced by the three Opposition parties, remember? They wanted it, and they complained there wasn't enough spending. Now they are asking for huge increases in EI payments...which will increase the deficit even more. If the Tories had a majority, they would have balked at running a $50 billion deficit. Unfortunately, the Opposition is going to try to play it both ways to score political points.

Well I think it's in the best economic interests for Harper and Flaherty to be at the helm, I still have some concerns over some of the socially conservative policies Harper could implement with a majority, such as the removal of the long-gun registry, or any legislation against same-sex marriage.

It's very rare that attack ads backfire, and they're also not making a statement about spending time abroad generally. They are stating facts: he has been out of the country for 34 years. They go on to say that he came back only because he thought he had a shot at being PM, which is reasonable because there appears to be no other reason why he moved back. The ad is making a statement about how much he cares about Canada if he only bothers to live here to gain power.

Right after these ads came out, he was also shown yelling that regardless of the fact that he's been away 34 yrs, he's very Canadian, because his father and granfather served for Canada - yeah right, way to offend not just immigrants, but also 1st and 2nd generation Canadians. I am not against "attack" ads...but these seem excessive and not really relevant. I think Canadians may be turned off by them as well. Stephane Dion was an easy target and frankly...he wasn't really a leader. But this ad is just a lame personal attack.

On the flip side....so they're saying Ignatieff is a leader then? Since they're going after his residency and not his leadership....
