Bobby's death was sad. And though he had a good career, he never really lived up to the hype that the Yankees and the New York media placed on his shoulders. Remember, Bobby was supposed to be the heir apparent to Mickey. And that never happened. And then the disaster of him being traded to the Giants (I don't know what the hell they were thinking)- Bobby said he hated San Francisco (Candlestick Park) so much he regarded those seasons he spent there as "lost."
It's amazing and sweet to see how much the players respect him and grew to love him. What I've always respected about them (including Girardi) was how emotions play such a big part in the way not only the Yankees play, but in every team. Being a Yankee fan my whole life, I obviously think of the Yankees first, however.
My father has always said my favorites as a kid were Gene Michale Mickey Mantle Tony Kubek Clete Boyer Roy White and Roger Maris. and of courseBobby Murcer a true Gentlemen and a great Player. He will surely be missed.
I remember Bobby Murcer's playing days. A Murcer memory of mine- after recouperating for 4 weeks in the hospital with a serious bout of salmonella food poisoning saw Murcer hit 2 mammouth homeruns against Texas Rangers at the Stadium one last August evening.(one actually appeared to have cleared the stadium although it didn't)Yankees didn't win pennant that year & I was a Mets fan.Nevertheless it was a very fun experience after spending 4 weeks in a hospital bed. Murcer was class act of Yankees.
I'll always remember the game in 1979 against the Orioles, when the Yankees had just come from burying there Capt. Thurman Munson. That night Bobby drove in all 5 runs, to help the Yankees, beat the Orioles 5-4...! It was one of the most unbelievable things, I had ever seen...!
the last plack to go up at yankee stadium before it closes should be for bobby murcer. a class act and one of my yankee heros. make it happen george. rip bobby murcer centerfield #1
One thing I've always liked about Joe is that he's not afraid to show his emotions. I remember back in '02, with the Cubs, he was asked to inform the crowd at Wrigley Field that the game was postponed due to "a tragedy in the Cardinals family"(Darryl Kile's passing), and he almost broke down then as well.
Im sorry to have such a negative comment on this video but Kim Jones of the Yes Network often pisses the fuck outta me , i mean, did you hear her question?? "Joe, how difficult is this for you right now." Im srry but if she asks me that id punch her her in the face and tell her, "Im srry KIM I dont answer stupid questions like that."
Anyhow, We all loved Murcer and he will always be remembered. God, what an American Icon he was.....RIP Bobby.
I'm not old enough to remember Bobby's playing days, but I often looked forward to Old Timers' Day just to hear his commentary from the outfield and the dugouts. I always found that more entertaining than the game itself!
If more people in pro sports carried themselves on and off the field like Bobby did, then we'd all benefit.
Now Thurman Munson's Best friend has come to see him. They are back together... best friends. Thats the only good thing that comes out of a passing is the togetherness and the reuniting of best friends up in heaven. Very sad that Bobby left us in this place only to find a better place. R.I.P. Bobby Murcer
"Bobby was one of the finest human beings I've ever met. He handled his battle with a grace and class that was hard to fathom. For me personally, it's an incredible loss. He was my idol growing up. I was lucky to work with him as a broadcaster, and it showed me that I had great taste as a kid. He was everything that you'd want in someone that you once looked up to. He lived up to every ideal that a little boy set for him. I'm going to miss him a lot. I miss him a lot already."
I grew up watching Yankee games with Bobby Murcer...I can't believe that I'll never have this again. I always loved his stories and his sense of humor during the game. He will be dearly missed for sure. See you on the flip side Bobby...we love you.
