  • He's great._.

  • i think they could have some better cymbals...just sayin

  • best known for his operatic version of Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor Only 39 when he died of a stroke

  • Never heard of this man until now but he is AMAZING.

  • Harborne Orchestra (Birmingham UK) are practising this piece of music at the moment.....at first I hated it but I love it ....the tune is sooo catchy

  • Very underrated opera. It's not as advanced or innovative as Verdi's FALSTAFF (based on the same play) but has a lot more charm. Also, like a lot of Wagner's contemporaries who used a more traditional style, Nicolai sort of got lost in the shuffle. He deserves some performances outside Germany.

Many notable composers have tried this play (not only Verdi but Salieri and Vaughan Williams) but Nicolai's may be the most delightful version of a somewhat nasty story.

  • 4:58-5:36 death for clarinets on the band arrangement >:(

  • one of my favorite classical pieces. So uplifting, reminds me of a fresh spring morning and breathing in deeply and the sighs of wonder when you can relax, roll over and just enjoy the stillness of beauty surrounding a sunlight filled room and all the joy of the sounds from outside rising in tempo and volume. Aaaaahh : )

  • oh this is the London Philharmonic with Alfred Scholz conducting. i got this same recording!

  • The poster is probably able to avoid punishment for copyright infringement if he doesn't identify the performers. Sneaky.

  • i have this same recording on a cd., it is the philidelphia symphony PA.,

  • 5:07 to 5:36 is awesome!

  • Lovely musical gem. Beautifully played. Thanks

  • played it for all county division 4 and it was amazing

  • this piece is beautiful. my high school just finished performing it for our concert and it has to be the most pleasant noise ever heard by my ears.

  • Who are the conductor and orchestra? These musicians have given us a great experience; must they remain anonymous? Thanks at least for identifying the composer and the name of the composition.

  • Yeah. We should know who performed such a good version of this overture

  • Who's performing this? It's almost as good as Kleiber.

  • I think it is Kleiber and the Wiener Philharmoniker, New Year's recoding of 1992. But of course, I could be terribly mistaken. Maybe the owner of this channel SHOULD give some more detailed information....

  • great piece

  • Yeah :-) I bet it would sound good through a surround sound system... one that would make the room shake :-)

BTW have you heard the Brahms Academic Festival Overture? You might like it.

BTW2 does the "dan" in your username mean you're a Steely Dan fan?
