An amazing turn around. l remember that months before at the African Nations Cup in Algeria, Cameroun had a dismal showing, as defending African champions. They really turned it around from the first game, and the whole continent followed them to a first quarter final for an African team. Unlucky, but it happens in football....

yes, 1990 was a very dull world cup. average goal per match was the lowest (2.21), and there's basically no comeback from any of the 52 games... whichever team conceded the first goal could never win the game (the only exception was Costa Rica vs Sweden).

Cameroon was the only entertaining team out of such a boring 1990 world cup. Too bad that they couldn't make it to the semi!

The world cup WAS low in goals, with fouls and penalties in the strategic heartland of Italian and Argentina's negative tactics throughout. But STILL..Gazza and Schillaci set the world alight and it was emotional and scintillating TV event.

1990 was an extraordinary tournament for the pure drama.. Characters like Valderrama, and Milla, and the English and Italian teams made it compelling for english viewers.But cameroon which extremely close to booting out a major team this game.

I grow tired of hearing how poor Italia 90 was. Granted goalscoring was the lowedt ever but there was a lot of drama and good football overall. You want a bad world cup, then 2006 is the place to look. That was easily the dullest and poorest of our time.

2006? Come on. Low goalscoring, record yellow and red cards, diving everywhere, no real classic games, not one hat trick scored, top goalscorer only scored 5 goals....it was a dreadful tournament. Just my opinion. Lots of those accusations are leveled at Italia 90 but 2006 was just a dull, stale WC. I agree with Vogras that 86 was the best.
