@Tdot344 I believe he is referring to all Canadian debt, public and private, gov't and citizen. The money that banks lend out is almost all debt. If you get a loan from the bank, they pull the money out of thin air and charge you interest on it. Canada actually does not have fractional reserve banking, as the need for banks to hold a percentage in "reserve" was removed from the banking act in the 90's. So almost all non-hard currency (what you hold in your bank account/loan) is debt.

Great movie. "The Money Masters" is very insightful. As well as "Zeigeist Addendum". However, like many documentaries, this showcases a problem and doesn't really present any solutions. I believe the root of many of the problems that plague the world is the outdated monetary system. It thrives on manufactured scarcity which breeds corruption of all types. But how does a world function without money? See "The Venus Project" & lectures by Jacque Fresco for some solutions to these problems.

- Government Debt is NOT compounded interest.. It is simple interest.. Bonds give a coupon which is fixed..
- Government interest free debt would be wildly inflationary....
- Green Party chick: "lower credit rating raises the cost of the debt." Untrue, raises the cost of new debt issued. Which is irrelevant in the context of the statement, because the government would be borrowing off itself in said context.

This documentary is quite misleading. Not all Canadian debt is paid to private banks. The majority is owned, through bonds and t-bills by other governments, pension plans, investment portfolios, mutual funds, etc. Not being paid to RBC or Canada trusts, but to people, many of them Canadian. Canada also holds bonds and t-bills of countries around the world, from which they pay us interest.
I also assume since this guy is so against banks that he pays everything with cash

@Tdot344 I believe he is referring to all Canadian debt, public and private, gov't and citizen. The money that banks lend out is almost all debt. If you get a loan from the bank, they pull the money out of thin air and charge you interest on it. Canada actually does not have fractional reserve banking, as the need for banks to hold a percentage in "reserve" was removed from the banking act in the 90's. So almost all non-hard currency (what you hold in your bank account/loan) is debt.

@Tdot344 one might quibble about what to label financial institutions/instruments but this distracts from the real issues inherent in a debt-based monetary system. Pointing out the that some individuals profit from a global debt based money system does nothing to address the larger systemic flaw of the scheme, which requires exponential growth of new debt to sustain itself. If Canada paid off its debt, it would have no money supply, including cash: money is debt.

Actually the govt allows canadian banks (which are mostly owned buy foreign interests) to print money electronically at whim.
just go ask for a loan they dont give you eds money they have in savings they simply process your loan app. then place that money you request in your account electronically. check out how much money is in physical circulation in canada and how much circulates electronically.
