This is definitely the oldest and steepest inland railway of this type, in this country anyway. My Nan and my Great Uncle (both no longer with us) both used to man the stations. My Nan used to 'drive' from the top station for (on and off) 13 years. I often wondered about the 'cable snap' issue and I think at the top station there is some sort of 'dead mans switch'.
Ive been to Bridgnorth many times on the SVR but Ive never been on the cliff railway. I tried to look for it in March when I was on the SVR for the Spring Gala but I couldnt find it and as I didnt want to miss the last train I fdecided to head back to Bridgnorth station.
Exit Bridgorth Station, cross the road via the pedestrian bridge, turn right, cross again and take the steps to Castle Walk, turn right and 200yds on is the Cliff Railway to Low Town - 1o mins from the Station. Hope this helps.
i thought funiculars were exclusive to chile, south america :P

Oldest? Surely not, Scarborough has at least one older one. I'd accept steepest though!

Not true, the Scarborough ones are older than this.

Last time I rode this was in 1958 as a trainee airman at Bridgnorth square-bashing camp!
