  • I sure miss Grand Slam and the Barber in that place.

  • Really interesting to go back and read the comments from 3 years ago. Ghetto in the sense that gangs roam and shoot at people, well no. Nobody is there to be shot at. Building wonderful places for tourist dollars, well that must have been a pipe dream. It still stands vacant as I type, what were they thinking?

  • wow......what a great and sad commentary on our young lives and how drastically things change. thanks so much for saving this. I grew up straight up the hill in north river hills and remember when cedarvale wasn't even there......

  • Thank you for thinking to record this and for posting this video. Lots of memories and it's now 2011 and none of this is left standing. Just a big empty space. I posted your video link for a FB group called "You know you're from Burnsville/Eagan if...". This video has had an impact on many of us filled with both memories and sadness. I am sure you will know many of us if you happen upon this message and want to join.

  • I have a chunk of Cedarvale Mall that my sister got for me after the demolition!

  • they twore that down dumb ass

  • this is supposed to be ghetto.?

  • Just compared to the rest of Eagan. Which is quite wealthy east of 35E.

  • oh alright

  • i drive by there every week, that mall was so empty it was crazy its been a dump my whole life.

  • did i click on the wrong video i thought this was supposed t be eagan not detroit...its kind of sad my dad said he lived here while moa was being built and he said it was thriving

  • Wow, thats how bad it looked 2 years ago? When I was like 12-13 (so like 15 years ago) I remember riding my bike to grand slam, getting candy from the Snyders. I think there was still shit going on down there up until I was 16. Then it just started deteriorating. Heard they're rebuilding it now.

  • Punctuation please!

  • i use to ride my back down there all the time like 3 years ago before i started smoking and using drugs

  • that shell gas sation burn down last year i live right up the hill from there

  • Great Video. I grew up in eagan in the 70's and remember Aplebaums Grocery, Roberts Drug store, Ben Franklin were all major stores in Cedarvale. Cedervale started to decline after the new Cerar Ave/HWY 13 opened around 1978/79 and cutt off easy access.

  • haha this just a suburb of minneapolis, where i live in the inner city of. it's horrible, we have about twice the national avg crime rate

  • where do you live?

  • in North Minneapolis

  • I've actully never felt threatened on the north side probobly because I've been to Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland and Washington D.C (I actully wasn't surprised when I heard the amount of Crime there)

  • more than twice

  • well i live like a mile away from thre and most of it is pretty much destroyed sadly

  • Many great winter days practicing baseball at the "Dugout" of Grand Slam.

  • cedarvale was always dead, but i would always get my shoes fixed there... (well not anymore)

eagan was looking like a dump in that area, huh?

  • It would be a good video, except for the ridiculous sounds.

  • I like the ridiculous sounds!!! Sounded like Cartman from South Park!

  • Wow... I always thought I'd had to travel a lot further to see (Sub)urban decay like the urban exploration sites show.

    Nicely done.

  • Is Jensen's still around? Seems like everything I remember in this particular area is gone. I don't have a soft spot in my heart for Eagan in general (two words: plastic fairyland) but it's sad to see this area so run down and deserted. The Cedarvale area was declining when I was growing up, but not nearly this bad.

  • Jensens is still around and so is cedarvale lanes.

  • Thanks for the memories. I grew up in Eagan in the 80s and Cedarvale was the place to be then.

  • your a punk and eagan is a joke. come to minneapolis and u will sht your pants boy

  • haha tell me about it i get robed down their alot and one part of it i cant even go to or i might get assualted by a certian person who sells stuff their lmao these kids dont know anything, you should see my old town in northern MN they think its a ghetto, bull shit, not one gang just a bunch of white and native kids thinking their black or in the mob lol iam glad iam out of that crap

  • Minneapolis aint shit iv lived in both cities there both good places to raise kids fuckin retard

  • this is eagan

  • r u sure this is eagan???? i'm sure i've been evrywere in eagan, but i have never seen this

  • You haven't been everywhere in Eagan then.

  • i live in eagan. and i've been to that place, but i don't remember it being that bad

  • when did you film this?

  • Back in November of '07. Same day I uploaded it.

  • i used to get my car fixed at rudy's!

  • omg! i used to love to go hang out at grand slam! that place rocked!

  • lol wow i live here but iv never seen it look that awfl... lol i dont think much of thats there... and the ghetteo peeps r almost all gone

  • eagan tap needs to open back up. sinclairs neesd to be sinclairs.....Cedervale Mall is officially gone....Is any of that going to be left? will cedervale lanes be there in 5 years? Probably end up putting in another senior housing complex......

  • LOL I know! Enough with the senior housing I say. This town aint trying to die.

  • I can't take any more senior housing. What about regular housing? All the "new" is either for the elderly, section 8, or the very wealthy.....We need some average joe housing! Or even a park, we need more of them, they keep developing our parks.......Oh yeah I think the vet is gone from over there too. The cabinet place (the big barn) is gone....Is the chinese restraunt there any more? What about the collision repair place?

  • Gone. All gone.

  • Damn! That is crazy. Do you know where the collision place went? I have had many of cars fixed there (actually my whole family has). Is the laundromat stil there? It was they day they smashed up Cedervale Mall.....But it's been a while....And if that is gone....I will have to pay a dry cleaner to was down comforters! So not cool!

  • The laundromat and carwash are still up but not for long.

  • The vet built a new office across from Cub just off of Cliff & Rahn. It's a great new location and beautiful facility. Not sure about the rest.

  • that place isnt deserted, there is a car wash there, and people go there to wash their cars

  • deserted doesnt mean ghetto...

  • Umm..yeah it kinda does. Google earth Detroit or south Chicago. Besides I wasn't being literal. It's not even there anymore.

  • this video is amazing. I grew up in Eagan and I can remember when Grand Slam was the hot spot. I knew the silver bell area was bad but I didn't know it was this bad. I will miss this place.

  • im movin to eagan this fall...and to you cdrvlguy...ill have to stop and bowl at eat at Fitz!

  • Thanks for that cool video. Thank god I'm one of the two businesses that are staying - thanks to everyone who still visits the area to go bowling and eat at Fitz's

  • Elvis, Eagan and Rudy's all in one video...you can't get much better than that. Thumbs up to the last standing business at Cedarvale. When Rudy's leaves we will be loosing a great service center and one sexy mechanic!! Come wipe my tears and make it all better Dave.

  • Cartman singing "In the Ghetto"?!!??! LOL!!!!!

  • no place in minnesota is what i would call "dangerous" but there certinaly is poverty

  • excuse me you must be from the suburbs let me fill you in first i'll start with st. paul; rice street my home, McCdounough homes, eastside, westside and downtown, frogtown(E block),selby ave. university ave. all are extremely dangerous especially at niht next minneapolis northside if you say that it isn't dangerous get your head outta ur ass second the southside chicago/franklin ave.,lake street, riverside projects just to name a few now go to any of these places and tell me if you feel safe.

  • I don't know if its because I grew up in frogtown but Ive been to all those places over the years and they aint that dangerous. Maybe its the way you carry yourself that attracts danger. Compared to Detroit or Chicago, Lowry and Penn looks like Disneyland.

  • no sir every one of those places are dangerous and you haven't been to half of those places obiously or you'd say different

  • and i have family in chicago never tell me about it

  • If you don't want me to tell you that you have family in Chicago then why would you tell me?

  • that made no sense

  • either way, you're an idiot bro. I'm from N.Y. My cousin lives in Eagan and that shit aint ghetto, and neither is Minneapolis or St. Paul...give me a break man. Chicago aint got shit on New York, that much is fo sure. Midwest? you're kidding

  • woh calm down, i think he means a getto compared to the rest of eagan. compared to NY or chicago, no. its just a video, dont let it get you so wriled up

  • chicago/franklin ave.,lake street, riverside i don`t fell them to be dangerous , every one go there and its normal places to be.

  • I live in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. The destruction of the Cedarvale area has destroyed our property values. They've been kicking businesses out left and right, but the "re-development" keeps getting put off. The area wasn't a "ghetto" until they started tearing everything down. The business area needed a facelift, not hotels & transit stations.

  • All the businesses started leaving long before any plans for the area were even made. Everyone goes to Cub or Target on Cliff road to do their shopping. Theres no demand for commerce in the Cedarvale area anymore. You have to build what the market demands. With the MOA right across the river, hotels would be perfect for all the tourist dollars.

  • Yes, but a lot of long-standing businesses have been FORCED out and not included in the "redevelopment" plans (i.e. the daycare, Mediterranean Cruise Cafe, Ace, Rudy's - Dave @ Rudy's is probably the last honest auto mechanic out there). And yet they can't seem to find a developer to actually follow through w/ the plans. Being only a couple blocks away (as the crow flies), we're just not too happy to see the high-density traffic come to our quiet neighborhood.

  • i contributed! theyr gonna make it like the heart of the city, burnsville. which is doing that city wonders. GO EAGAN!

  • Looks prime for some development that will actuall contribute to the area. 'Downtown Eagan' is a bit of an oxymoron, I think.

  • that is sad...once a great place to shop and meet, now empty...

  • Eagan is actually rebuilding the entire cedar grove neighborhood completely with hotels and a transit station for the MOA. I dont remember any suburbs being demolished though other than the west side flats in Saint Paul back in the 1940's.

  • Damn and thats a township outside Minneapolis? Do they have anything in mind to replace the buildings - Something I did read a while back was that entire SUBURBS have been demolished in Mpls...

  • They are not tearing down entire suburbs in Mpls. Too many suburbs have expanded into their farmland with malls and large look-alike housing complexes. Some of our suburbs suffer from no downtown area, just shopping malls. Really Minnesota has very little ghetto and it's certainly not in Eagan. Urban sprawl is a rearing it's ugly head but no major tear downs.

  • FYI Eagan is a suburb of St Paul......Not being snobby just correcting a detail....I wish I knew what they were going to put in that area.
