Admiral Kusnetzov will undergo a major refit in 2012, after the refit the carrier will carry more aircraft, they will replace su-33 with mig 29k, so it will double it's aircraft capacity, the carrier will have better radars and other electronics and it's possible that the steam engines of the ship will be replaced by nuclear reactors.

@phadil even do the mig-29 has a lifting body design its wings are small in span and area. even do it could takeoff with minimal flap it would only do this if it had very limited fuel or with no arnmanets. even do the su-33 is better plane and alot better then the mig-29k, i think that carrier operation is more suited to the likes of a smaller aircraft due to its small space onbroad of a aircraft carrier of this size su-27 is just to big and has had some problems becouse of that

I don't know what's the big hoohaa with steam catapulted carriers in western navies. The Ski-jump carriers are doing just fine and in fact are cheaper to operate than handling the expensive steam system installed in in them especially aboard nuclear ACs.

Technically I think both India and Russia should continue operating ski-jump carriers (even nuclear propelled ones) because we don't need to waste money like richer western forces.

Catapult allows safer take off due to shorter "Point of Return". Slope-Ascend (not ski jump) has much higher accident rate, and also limits takeoff weight due to the fact that aircraft has to soley rely on its thrust. Su-33 has significantly lower fuel and arms load than its cousin Su-27. Russia/USSR never mastered sophistication of Steam/Electro magnetic catapult - USSR only made 7 (all decommissioned but 1 left now) aircraft cruisers in its history (vs US's 100+ including escort carrier).

Because it seems like its more of a deterant to low flying cruise missles and or aircraft trying to avoid radar by ground cluter. I was saying as more of an offensive tool.
