Admiral Kusnetzov will undergo a major refit in 2012, after the refit the carrier will carry more aircraft, they will replace su-33 with mig 29k, so it will double it's aircraft capacity, the carrier will have better radars and other electronics and it's possible that the steam engines of the ship will be replaced by nuclear reactors.
@phadil even do the mig-29 has a lifting body design its wings are small in span and area. even do it could takeoff with minimal flap it would only do this if it had very limited fuel or with no arnmanets. even do the su-33 is better plane and alot better then the mig-29k, i think that carrier operation is more suited to the likes of a smaller aircraft due to its small space onbroad of a aircraft carrier of this size su-27 is just to big and has had some problems becouse of that
@bingofioul "K" means "ship-based" ("Korabelnij" in russian), and "UB" means "training and fighting" ("Uchebno-Boevoj" in russian). This is why UB-versions are two-seated: the second seat is for an instructor.
@bingofioul MiG-29K is for carrier , Mig-29KUB is for carrier,but its tandem two-seat operational trainer variant,but both is modernized 4 + + generation
@Ouija121085 America should help India nuke both Russia and Pakistan. But, I think America should do away with Russia first. Ouija, you are a total moron and I hope some person of a darker hue kills you.
@NosferatuAaacaado Shut the fuck up bitch. No one cares. Everyonre knows U.S kicks ass. Keep thinking what you do. In the end, you will see the full wrath of the USA on that sorry ass bitch.
Don't forget, unlike you Neoconservative baby-killers, our "national interest" doesn't require that we be able to mobilize overwhelming force against women and children the world over, on sea and land. This carrier is more than sufficient for our needs, such as policing your various puppets in the Russian near abroad. As for the concept in general, the USSR decided against massive carriers fleets early on. Why bother when you can field a few sunburn missiles and be done ?
I don't know what's the big hoohaa with steam catapulted carriers in western navies. The Ski-jump carriers are doing just fine and in fact are cheaper to operate than handling the expensive steam system installed in in them especially aboard nuclear ACs.
Technically I think both India and Russia should continue operating ski-jump carriers (even nuclear propelled ones) because we don't need to waste money like richer western forces.
No one is foolish enough to irrtate Russian navy anyway
Catapult allows safer take off due to shorter "Point of Return". Slope-Ascend (not ski jump) has much higher accident rate, and also limits takeoff weight due to the fact that aircraft has to soley rely on its thrust. Su-33 has significantly lower fuel and arms load than its cousin Su-27. Russia/USSR never mastered sophistication of Steam/Electro magnetic catapult - USSR only made 7 (all decommissioned but 1 left now) aircraft cruisers in its history (vs US's 100+ including escort carrier).
No doupt Indian gains a huge asset in this carrier and the mig-29k. the biggest problem is they have no AWACs that is carrier capable or Naval ship that can provide that type of cover.
@Husar101 helecopters are not good AWACs. Just think about they dont even have 1/2 the range and cant get to places quick enough. I heard the Ka-31s were for submarine warfare.
@sophiemaggie1 It's used for detection of airborne and surface targets. It can also be used to provide guidance for over the horizon missiles. Some info here:
@Husar101 thanks for the info. Also thought I would mention that the first 12 Mig-29ks were actually included in the cost of the carrier. A, sorry for it costing twice as much as we thought, guesture from russia.
@sophiemaggie1 I just read the links you sent and wonder what altitude it can detect targets from. Because it seems like its more of a deterant to low flying cruise missles and or aircraft trying to avoid radar by ground cluter. I was saying as more of an offensive tool. An aircraft that can fly out 450 nm, refuel, and provide EWR for a strike package while also acting as an airbourne command/control center.
@sophiemaggie1 It's good for close AWACS like just to takeoff and fly around the fleet next to the ship but the ships have better range their selfs so.. Where you heard about AWACS helicopters? O.o
About $2.1 billion USD... which is a full $2.3 billion LESS than a brand new carrier.
India is getting a mega deal on this carrier. And they should be thankful, which they are. Russia and India are very good friends, and I hope it continues
Now add some gross weight and DA and see how well that whole 'ski jump launch' thing works out for you.
