A single payer system is different than government run healthcare, which is different from a public option. Currently all three ideas are dead. All we are talking about now is "insurance reform" whatever that means.
Doctors are wasteful and have to order x,y, and z extra tests and keep patient in hospital just in case.
With your taxes you have been bailing out (maximizing profits of) insurance companies for years by taking care of the expensive patients they toss. Why not regulate them?

Benign GI problem (like Gilbert's), consult GI. Well of course its gonna cost lots of money. Primary care is not satisfying anymore as they just turf. Why? Too scared of being sued.
Its a gigantic leap between government health insurance option (public option), to government run healthcare. One is allowing people to BUY into medicare which can be done simply. While government run healthcare would mean that the government would have to buy the hospitals, employee all physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare providers, etc. Rather a large leap no?
If private insurance they can't compete, let them file Ch11. They exist since they force millions of us file Ch11.
Subsidize insurance for poor people? Without a public option I see this as a government handout to the insurance companies to subsidize their risks & maximize their profit. Without a not-for-profit insurance option ANY government subsidy to anyone in any form is essentially a tax on U&I to maximize health insurance profitability.
Republican, against government bail outs, should be furious about this permanent bailout. Unfortunately, they are misguided and narrow-minded.
What people have to do is believe in Obama! Or get off your arses and start talking to these Senate Democrates that you want a Public Option, and make sure they will vote on it!
i doubt he will ditch the public option.i think the media works so hard at trying to think for Obama instead of shutting the fuck up and let him run the country. the media thinks they own him or some thing. just get off his nuts already.

Because many Americans are fools proud of being brainwashed by McCarthy and utterly ignorant of how well socialism can work not only in their favour, but works in practice in many European countries, some of which have HIGHER living standards then the US.
Some Americans need to educate themselves and stop being such a bunch of servile tools for the rich.
As loudmouth as some Americans are to everyone else. Said Americans just love bending over and taking it from the rich don't they.
grabac9: Americans don't like Socialism, BUT Socialism is the answer to a lot of Americas problems. Keep ignoring this FACT and those problems will just keep getting worse. God did not make the world so that one Idealology would rule independently but that all Idealologies will each solve certain problems. This is why Obama wants to work with Republicans. Capitalism is not the answer to all your problems but definately for some!
I hate to be the one saying it but i think I can since I'm the one whose ethnic origin is shall we say...from "behind the iron curtin". Socialism has already been tried many, many times throughout history and the only constant in the universe is that it has always failed. Government should regulate and be a fair umpire, but it should not be a player...
Why do Americans keep confusing progressive liberal democratic socialism with totalitarian communism? It was the assholes of Russia who put Stalin into power, just like the assholes of America put Bush into power.
I know its hard for an idiot to understand, but Socialism is an economic structure. Commuism is a political and economic structure. In the manifesto, Communism was supposed to evolve into a democratic socialist state, but that is a utopian hope that never materialized. Know what your talking about before spouting your Beckian rhetoric.
The Republicans were blatantly evil, fooling the extremely stupid into believing that they're good.
The Democrats may have some good people in there somewhere, but the people pulling the strings in the background have fooled the hopeful into believing that they're good, but in general those background people are at least greedy and oftentimes quite evil, too.
The only way the public option will be passed is if people start calling in to the White House and voicing their support for the public option and warning against President Obama dropping it. Call in to the White House and make your voice heard, every call counts. White House comment line: 202-456-1111.
I want to get to immigration, the liberals next big defeat. Healthcare is already done, so lets move to that next issue that will fill townhalls even more and be another big win for the GOP.
I should run for president. My platform would be: Legalization of Marijuana. Legalize prostitution. Single payer medical system. Implement flat tax. Pull out of all war-zones and reduce the size of military. Institutionalize all sex offenders. Make electric cars mandatory by 2020. Tax churches. Tax junk food. Implement program to require license in order for couple to have children. Make huge investment in geothermal energy plants. Sigh, I would never get elected.
Lol its funny because I have basically the same list. Its just that this list hurts the interests of the rich status que and the 'patriotic' people they have gotten to support this regime against even their own best intrests.
Well folks why don't you guys do some huge protest to convice the prez ditching the public option will be worst than ditching the blue dogs. Also you have to turnout and vote for mid terms which is usually have very low youth turnout and run by old white folk turnout. Why you think the blue dogs are so reluctant to go public option they are afraid of the old angry white people.
America is not a democracy. This is a concept that most people, including most Americans, simply cannot grasp. In America, the rights of the individual, are supposed to be sacrosanct, and the wants of the many are of little consequence. Here in America, there is a very vocal minority of people, who do not want further governmental intrusion into their lives, which is what many see any government run or sponsored health care as being.
Yes it can be a selfish society. But this nation, arguably one of the strongest in the world, was built on the notion of individual liberty being the best way of life. We have been giving that liberty up incrementally for many years, and a lot of us have just had enough. None of the liberties that have been confiscated from us, by our government, have helped any of us be more sociable, and quite frankly, may be the cause of much of our anti-social behavior. People just get pissed when ripped off
Who the president is, has so little to do with the ills of this country, that it's remarkable that people think it does. The president has very little power, he's a freakin figurehead for jebus sake. The real power lies in congress, doesn't anybody know that?? Sure he can create signing statements, and executive orders, but have those statements and orders ever been challenged in a federal court?? There is nothing in the constitution that authorizes them. Why haven't they been fought??
The president is like a CEO. Congress is like the workers.
The president doesn't directly do much of anything, but he has a great power in his ability to persuade Congress to pass bills. Presidential support is a very desirable thing to have, plus the public is usually supportive of the position of the President.
How many CEO's do you know of, that can be voted out of their position by the workers?? How many companies workers, can decide to change the rules of those companies, even if their CEO's don't want them to??
Perceived presidential power, flies in the face of his actual power, as described in the constitution. I realize it's been that way for a long time, I just don't understand why we've allowed it.
CEOs work for their investors, the President works for the people, or at least he/she's meant to.
Like you said, the actual power lies in the Senators and Congressmen/women. I assume you are talking about the power detailed in Article I of the Constitution. Each state gets it's 2 Senators that are voted in anyway.
I'm not saying the President has more power than the Congress/Senate, god no, I'm saying he has more power than a single Senator.
Washington is like Chicago in the days when Big Al Capone and his thugs ruled. All the Republicans are on the take, and a lot of the Democrats to (eg the so-called conservative Democrats). They take campaign contributions from the Big Business lobbyists and in return vote the way Big Business wants. Until real campaign finance reform is passed, Big Business is going to run this country, not the people. This will never happen because Congress won't give up their campaign contributions.
Absolutely. The public option is already so watered down it's a useless argument at this point. Doesn't matter if we have it or not, it's going to cost the same amount as any private insurance company, basically removing the whole fucking point of it. This is where it's almost impossible to not be apathetic to this whole mess, and really anything else that happens in politics. We're never going to get anything changed at this point. This is the beginning of the end of the American Empire.
There will be AN PUBLIC OPTION in the Obama's health plan, but the trickery is it will need a "trigger" in the next 5-10 years or so...(IF the for-profit insurance failed to control costs (which they won't), the result is a temporary hundred of billions health insurance bail-out/handouts by the tax-payers, written in the band-aid bill.
If President Obama gives up on the public option then we should give up on him. We should run some one else for the President in the next election. We simply cannot have a weak President and a return to the God awful Republicans.
I really dont know what the hell he is thinking, over 100 dems in the house already signed and sent him a letter saying they will not vote for any bill without a public option.
If they stick to their guns, no public option means no health care bill at all. Which is mind boggling since we have the numbers to pass anything we want, Obama dosnt push for this, then he just a sell out politician like all the rest.
I think honestly at this point the smart thing to do would be to ignore everything until Obama speaks on the matter in his address. It's like this with every fucking issue, all these media referencing some source (95% of the time unnamed or otherwise anonymous) saying one thing the next day, then another unnamed source saying the opposite the next. It's all static and noise and only serves to disillusion us before we have an actual reason to be so. Tune out, wait, and go after Congress till then
I think that whats happened is that Obama has used the public option as a bargaining chip to get other deals that are also important for reform. And now where he's got that, he can't just go out and say he's fighting for the public option. That wouldn invalidate the dialogue he has been having with the opposition so far. No no no, I think Cenk has already made up his mind about how this will play out. Inferred justification, if you will. But then again, haven't we all ?
What can we say, we had the audacity to hope. (lol)
So he's not everything we expected. Our expectations were pretty high. a lot of people seemed to think that once he entered the white house that magically everything would turn sparkly and happy (or that he'd legalize pot lol again)
Still, I think we chose right this time. I mean, can you imagine McCain and Palin in office? McCain isn't that bad, but Palin was an embarrassment. I never thought I'd see someone make Bush look good!
Blaming the Republican party for defeating the "public option" is stupid. The democratic party is splintered, and the so-called "conservative democrats" won't vote for it. Thats the real reason it won't pass. But the Democrats try and hide that dirty little fact.
Yeah, I'm disgusted how far the parties have fallen. The majority of Republicans come off as rabid loonies, and the dems have become so spineless. I'm still kinda young though... have they always been that way?
No , you are wrong .If you are left leaning you need to vote with the dems or risk the chance we will have another Bush type for 8 years .Besides nothing is in stone yet there still might be a public option or maybe another solution to the problem.
What the Republicans and Democrats run on and what you actually get are two different things. The only "public option" here is that health insurance companies will still have the "option" to screw the "public".
This is a great victory for Progressives. Obama has secured us a bag of gumballs, and buy one entree / get one entree free coupons at Bennigan's! This is the hope and change we believed in.
In the UK, in the 80s, we had the left win 16m votes against 13m for the right in 1983, and 17m against 13m in 1987. I can only put this down to the left having a much more sophisticated set of goals, whereas the right only has own overarching one; being harsh, I might say it's down to right-wingers being happier to compromise somewhat.
I don't understand it. The democrats have both houses, why give in to the republicans any way? If there is opposition among the democrats, buy them of with some pork barrelling elsewhere.
Man this could be the biggest rebound of his career or the third consecutive quitter/flipflop for the liberals. Gore won Florida but did not contest. John Kerry was all over the place in his campaign, and Obama is an outright coward. Where the HELL was all the fire he brought to the Israel issues. If he drops the public option he will probably be a one term president. It is that important.
Us Liberals lost this when Obama "compromised" on the end of life counseling article. It's not a Death Panel and when you compromise you make it seem that it could have been. You don't compromise on shit for an extremist, out of control, radicalist, right wing party. You fucking fight for people's approval and threaten ruin the GOP if they don't give the people what they want. Unfortunately that would require an Oxymoron that we'll probably never see. ::Democrat and Balls::
ya the "riding system" in canada is fucked in the head, unless you happen to vote for the winner in your riding your vote counts for nothing
it simply allows partys that have a foothold on a riding to keep it indefinetly and it makes it extremely difficult for new partys to get seats, like the green party got roughly 10% of the votes last year and only got one seat. i dont exactly support them but but our system isnt even close to being democratic
I want the public option but if there is not enough votes ,then what is Obama suppose to do ?If the bill does not have a public option he will not have enough votes to pass reform but on the other hand if he does have a public option he will not have enough votes .Either way tons of people are going to be really upset .Obama is stuck between a rock and a hardplace and another rock.
Tell everyone he will Veto it if it does not have a Public Option and then try to push it through again. FDR made Social Security work, and Obama can do the same if he wants to. America's checks and balances are amazing.
Anyone who has questions regarding the public option may be able to find the answers in the comment section of my profile. I have a wide variety of resources and information including the ez to read version of the bill and several ways in which you can become more involved.
I'm much more interested to hear how the liberal caucus is going to handle this. I know Obama will do what's politically expedient, that's what presidents are for. But will the liberals really have the guts to draw a line in the sand? Now that'd be interesting.
The progressive caucus has put it in writting ,they will not vote for a bill without a option .Somthing like 82 signatures .But a bill that will pass through the house probably will not pass through the senate .Thats really the interesting thing here Obama has his hands tied by his own party .Republicans are not helpful at all with this issue but niether are democrats.
ya know what the people should fucking get off their lazy asses and do?! We should straight up protest lobbyists who are NOT from a non profit organization!!! think about it...
Anyone who walks away from Barack Obama over one issue was never a true supporter. If they keep it up he may just not run in 2012 and tell us all to go to hell. Wait and see what kind of health care reform you get under Mitt Romney.
Cenk may be absolutely right about not getting the public option,. in fact, I think he presented a great case last night with "Obama is a Politician, Not a Leader", but this video... this seemed... a liiittle "paranoid".
It almost sounded like... "Do you see that? He said the word 'and'. Public option is doomed.." It seems like the same over-analysis of politicians' words that made everyone think the public option was ALREADY dead last week.
what great case did he present? He didn't present any real reason why he thinks Obama is dropping the public option. He made an assumption, and made a long winded speech about Obama not being a leader. Many words, and conclusions based on assumptions that don't have a source or facts, or background or evidence is not a great case. Cenk followers are as bad as ppl claim Obama followers are. In fact, I'm starting to think they're worse.
Cenk attempted to read the political subtext, which is almost inevitably closer to what politicians mean. Obama supports blindly follow what is said on the surface. I don't think anybody didn't realize that his analysis involved some conjecture, but based on what has been admitted and insinuated in the last few weeks, it seemed quite fair.
First of all I don't get how they are going to cut the mega cost of the current health care by giving up to the private companies. I'm agreeing more and more with the late George Carlin, America has owners and they decide what happens, not the politicians.
Now they are realy going to start makeing an omlet out of oure brain and im not american...
We ARE going to start experiancing lack of access on some most independent internet sites at first... as you would steal be able to go to that site but its a duplicate with all unwanted info erased for you. We won't even know obut it for some time to come.
I mean If ONE can sell 9/11 like that simply by covering it buy TV screan.
they are going to make excauses that the ''Global'' ec. crises are responcible for the helthcare program not to go through...if there even is such a thing as Global ec. crises...
At next election... one pushing for halthcare reform in 2012 is going to be the one starting the marshall law, because that one to won't go through with it, so ppl will go balistic.
But then again america has the strongest weapon of warr and it's well astablished!
look at what the republicans have managed to get obama to do: begin to cause fissures among democrats. obama needs to really consolidate the democratic base instead of being tempted to reach a nationwide stature. if he goes for all, for compromises rooted in poor public policy, then he will end with nothing. sounds like bad chess, bad jiu jitsu. we need to pressure him to talk him into some sense, if not, then drop him.
maaaan i KNEW al gore shouldve run. he woulda had balls. not this fucking CHILD barack pussy-ein obama. ugh and how will he cave to climate change? ESPECIALLY now that hes LET HIMSELF be weakened by rights lies. ugh i feel sick -_-
Are you kidding? Gore was the worst president in the history of the United States!
In his presidency Iraq was invaded, the unconstitutional Patriot Act was imposed on the public, and 4 trillion was spent on a useless war that killed more Americans than all terrorist attacks combined.
yea i get the joke but im referring to 2008. im saying he shouldve run in 2008, though i ALSO would have liked him to win in 2000 or 2004. But my point is the things obama seems unwilling to do today, i believe gore would be doing today, no problem.
Personally I have an agree/disagree relationship with your position.
I'm still undecided whether he could do more as a President or as a campaigner. As a president he can place emissions caps and the such, but as a campaigner he can get people interested in the topic and actually get real change happening.
But yes, he would make a fine President, perhaps the best since JFK.
Cenk.. you're missing a very obvious one straight from Obama. Remember what he said in Colorado about the Public Option being just a "tiny sliver" of the health care reform package? I knew back then he'd bailed on it.
Yeah, Cenk covered that on the show two weeks ago, and that was the first sign that Obama caved in. But many people on progressive forums kept arguing, "oh now, this is all part of a wise strategy by Obama to lure them in & then prevail with the public option."
What Cenk's doing now is using new evidence to back up what rational people already knew back then: Obama is spineless on substantive fights and always looks to Emanuel to decide what's better for re-election.
i always laugh when people act so surprised when politicians don't keep their word, the fact that they all lie in their campaign and say whatever it takes to get into office. perhaps my favorite one was good old george hw bush... "read my lips, NO NEW TAXES!" hahaha what a crock of shit
All the insurance companies have to do is look at Medicare's low administrative costs to realize they could never compete with a public option. The economies of scale are huge. Forcing the insurers to compete with a public option would mean an end to the gravy train. Guys who make millions every year are not in the habit of cutting their own throats.
If everyone makes noise to keep the public option, I think we can keep it. At this point, that's what I'm doing. Write your Reps and your senators and tell them they're losing in the primary if they're not fighting for this reform.
we dont need to make a deal period. that is why the democrats were so excited to get the 60 votes. but public option is dead and we are screwed so where is the change we were promised the lousey double dealing worthless i could go on and on but why bother?
Why is the public option so important? you do know that a majority of healthcare reform, ISN'T the public option it's mostly govt regulations to change the current system and make it more accessible to the people? If we don't have the public option, we can still get the change we want. I constantly wonder, when did the PO become the holy grale of healthcare reform?
If the healthcare reforms fails, Obama is not to blame. You, the American people are. Why are all of you who are in favor of Public option not on the street demanding it. Obama is not weak, you the American people are. Remember the demonstrations in Iran. Those people were brave. Its so pathetic to believe that Obama doesnt need your help. He does. Hes not Superman for crying out loud!
I've mostly seen people who are screaming AGAINST the public option. Congress is waffling around fighting each other, Republicans well we know what their intentions are, Obama's base mainly driven by media opinion is turning against him... hmm, I don't blame Obama for wondering if he should push the public option. Just like "don't ask don't tell" and healthcare in 1994, the people weren't behind the President, nothing got done, if nothing happens, it's the peoples fault.
It scares me sometimes how accurate Cenk is in his analysis and predictions

That would be relevent if this were socialism. But it isn't even that.

I am gravely saddened by this.
You have no choice.

TheJapanChannelDcom:
America is not a democracy. This is a concept that most people, including most Americans, simply cannot grasp. In America, the rights of the individual, are supposed to be sacrosanct, and the wants of the many are of little consequence. Here in America, there is a very vocal minority of people, who do not want further governmental intrusion into their lives, which is what many see any government run or sponsored health care as being.

Sounds like a very selfish "society" to live in...

TheJapanChannelDcom 2 years ago
Yes it can be a selfish society. But this nation, arguably one of the strongest in the world, was built on the notion of individual liberty being the best way of life. We have been giving that liberty up incrementally for many years, and a lot of us have just had enough. None of the liberties that have been confiscated from us, by our government, have helped any of us be more sociable, and quite frankly, may be the cause of much of our anti-social behavior. People just get pissed when ripped off

Right to privacy - literally eliminated.
Freedom of speech - reduced, and in the process of being reduced further.
States rights - huh?
Poor legislation, resulting in loss of jobs, corporate takeover of everything, and increased costs.
Mandatory this, mandatory that
An asinine drug war, resulting in real, genuine loss of liberty.
Dumb ass wars, in countries that did nothing to us, resulting in needless loss of life.
Yeah, none of this is the governments fault...right!

Right to Privacy - Patriot Act
Freedom of Speech - "Free speech zones"
States Rights - Hold citizens on no charges indefinitely
Drug War - Refusal to lax laws
All under Bush, mind you Obama hasn't done anything about the drug war, which would have to be the stupidest thing ever proposed.

Why haven't they been fought??
xxxchaindrive 2 years ago
The president is like a CEO. Congress is like the workers.
The president doesn't directly do much of anything, but he has a great power in his ability to persuade Congress to pass bills. Presidential support is a very desirable thing to have, plus the public is usually supportive of the position of the President.
SirPwn4lot 2 years ago
How many CEO's do you know of, that can be voted out of their position by the workers?? How many companies workers, can decide to change the rules of those companies, even if their CEO's don't want them to??
Perceived presidential power, flies in the face of his actual power, as described in the constitution. I realize it's been that way for a long time, I just don't understand why we've allowed it.
xxxchaindrive 2 years ago
I agree, and I don't understand it either. I am glad I do not live in America though.
Khazule 2 years ago
Business isn't a democracy.

In the UK, in the 80s, we had the left win 16m votes against 13m for the right in 1983, and 17m against 13m in 1987. I can only put this down to the left having a much more sophisticated set of goals, whereas the right only has own overarching one; being harsh, I might say it's down to right-wingers being happier to compromise somewhat.

Dradeeus 2 years ago
what great case did he present? He didn't present any real reason why he thinks Obama is dropping the public option. He made an assumption, and made a long winded speech about Obama not being a leader. Many words, and conclusions based on assumptions that don't have a source or facts, or background or evidence is not a great case. Cenk followers are as bad as ppl claim Obama followers are. In fact, I'm starting to think they're worse.

Cenk attempted to read the political subtext, which is almost inevitably closer to what politicians mean. Obama supports blindly follow what is said on the surface. I'm still undecided whether he could do more as a President or as a campaigner. As a president he can place emissions caps and the such, but as a campaigner he can get people interested in the topic and actually get real change happening.
But yes, he would make a fine President, perhaps the best since JFK.

@ Painkill3r4:
Yeah, Cenk covered that on the show two weeks ago, and that was the first sign that Obama caved in. But many people on progressive forums kept arguing, "oh now, this is all part of a wise strategy by Obama to lure them in & then prevail with the public option."
What Cenk's doing now is using new evidence to back up what rational people already knew back then: Obama is spineless on substantive fights and always looks to Emanuel to decide what's better for re-election.
