Napoleon and Shogun 2 Total wars are my favorite, beauase, im into Japanese Ninja and Samauri times and I loved the Napoeon times also.

In this game they show a gun team per cannon but actually a gun team had to man a cannons per broadside (one in port and one in starboard). Also, the English usually reloaded twice as fast as the French and gunners took part in battle.

@kunamyyy Not many people play multiplayer on etw anymore. However Napoleon: total war has a pretty large multiplayer community. Out of all of their most recent games, I would recommend napoleon the most (for multiplayer that is).

With Napoelon you can play with Portugal, but u can only do it in the Iberian Peninsula and I want more. So I decided to buy ETW and NTW game of the year, for 10 € and Shogun 2 for 15 €, so that I can play multiplayer.

@ThePistons4life I own them all. I'd recommend looking into gameplay videos of shogun 2 and napoleon. They are different eras so they each have their own playstyles.  I personally like gunpowder and cannon battles over melee combat. (So i recommend napoleon total war)

I play most of my games on low because i'm someone that freaks out if I have anything lower than 40 fps but I could run it on a lot higher.. You would need a real 3D mode like shown in Star Trek or similar movies to create a realistic historic simulation. Not that thing they call 3D today.

Remember all the computer nerds sitting and playing soccer or baseball or car racing. May be fun but that's nothing like the real thing. Ever tried a real BMW on a German no speed limit highway? That's real. No race game can match that.

I love this game, and have since the very beginning. But the fact is the term realism doesnt come close. I would like see something along the lines of a commander view to where its ground level and can see only what a commander could see. Another thing would be more smoke from the rifles and cannons. I have a black powder rifle and was suprised but just how much smoke it bellowed from firing one round. Fog of War comes to mind after every shot. How a platoon sized element could see is beyond me.

Realism? Funny dress, bad ship details ...., and at 2.00 a British SOL in perfect raking position, not shooting. Small guncrews to serve 1,5 ton deck guns. Ships not cleared for action with anti bording nets and overhead nets to protect the crew from falling mast debris. Big holes in the hulls, are they using modern grenades? But guns behind the holes still firing, recoil stop lines ??? Wrong sail positions. The list could go on and on. Not to forget that the RN lost no 1st Rate in battle.

Big problem in every game (and movie!) is the missing gunsmoke. If you ever watched a single 32pdr fired with a real load, oh lord. A few musketmen are producing a cloud that hides everything. Not good to play without seeing anything ;-)) Or the deafening sound of a salvoe. Your neighbour would...

@crematio To be honest, your comment actually compelled me to recreate my fights. There are actually mods for this game that make it more realistic, adding tons of smoke and balancing units. I actually just finished a couple battles with a buddy that contain these mods and plan on re-uploading this fight. :) Fortunately for me, my computer can handle the intensity. Come back later and see if I did a little better with the visuals.

@MineFutures firefights don't last that long the taliban fires, 1 or 3 bullets manages to hit the humvee and run off. Then it takes like 5-10 sec for a quick sitrep and get out return fire and continue patrol it's rare to find a firefight lasting more than 2 minutes.

In videogames 'Realism' is taking 5 years to reach the nearest star, doing menial tasks in a warzone and getting killed by a surprise mortar bombardment or having the battle won years before by training methods, supply lines and weapons technology. Since I want to get to Alpha Centauri in the few hours of spare time I have a day we can't have a 'realistic' game in this sense, so we make a compromise.

I mean there's Microsoft flight simulator, VBS2/Arma 2 and other games that are so realistic they are used for military/civilian training. As for the Royal Navy never losing a first rate, so what it's an alternate Universe, two superpowers have never engaged each other with modern weapons, no nuclear war has ever been fought so we shouldn't have Fallout 1,2,3 or books like Brother in the Land?

They use the same crew dress for AWI and Napoleonic wars, show guns fired at Trafalgar with lintstock (they had flintlocks in this time) and the sails .... If you like to play , well. But if you want a historic recreation, no. Starts with the Admiral's command in battle, there was little. In the games you have too much control. Good for fun but...

@denzuiper Yes, a realistic amount of smoke would make the game boring. In reality they aimed at the flashes of the enemies fire. With black powder the second volley was hardly aimed at all. That's the main reason for withholding the first volley until you are very close. Imagin a line of battle, regiments or ships. Thousands of guns producing that horrible sound, smell and smoke. The sound hits the body like a super scale heavy metal concert. Lower gun deck must be like hell. In game just.....

In movies or games you are a watcher and get a far better view than any officer had. Little or no smoke, Just stand near a single real gun fired at a show. With 10% load. The sound, the air movement, it hits the body. A big cloud from a minimum charge. The smell. In a game you get nothing of it. And most of all: No fear of death.

Fortunately there are "stupid" so that there is some slow progress.

Darthmod did a better job of navy combat. It changed the sailing properties and damage models for all ships to make them more realistic. Missing details with the graphics though is just down to the game base unfortunately.

Second, Its a game... It's not going to be 100% acccurate... just like modern warefare when you can take 10 bullets and still be running around killing other people....,and Finally, they didn't use boarding nets till the late 18th century.... Ps.... The oddly dressed men are marines.
