  • he still spun on take off....

  • i wounder if this is johns car ? =)

  • @bigredchnl20 It sure is! Hey, is this Chris?

  • @OneBadSuperbird Yep sure is,well this is cool !!!

  • @bigredchnl20 Heck yeah it is! It took me a minute to figure out who ya were! Tell the old man to get busy restoring the Daytona and the Hemi 500!

  • If that's the origina S&M 'bird whoever owns it now ruined a perfectly good piece of history with all those mods!

  • @528hemi100 Dude, did you read the title? It says "Sox & Martin Tribute Superbird". The original race car was destroyed many years ago in Louisiana. This car has been more fun to own and race the last 30 years than you could ever imagine. It should only get better once we complete the car and get it back out on the track.

  • probobly the coolest sox & martin car, and the least successful on the track

  • does that superbird have power windows? very nice car btw. what engine, tranny, and rearend is in it?

  • Bird does not have power windows. At the time the video was shot, the car had a basically stock 440, Torqueflite and 4.30 geared 8 3/4 rear. Car now has fully adjustable four-link coilover rear with 4.30 geared race-preped Dana 60, subframe connectors and eight point cage. All-aiumunum Indy Cylinder Head 451 low-deck stroker is currently being built as well as an ATI-prepped Torqueflite.

  • how much horsepower?

  • The 440 that was in the car in this video put out around 425 horsepower. The new 451 puts out 860 horsepower. You can watch the dyno pulls of the 451 in another video I have posted here on YouTube.

  • any other changes made to the Superbird?

  • Since this video was shot, the car has received a fully adjustable four-link coilover rear suspension, race -prepped 4.30 deared Dana 50, subframe connectors, abd ab eight point roll cage. When it comes back from having the paint freshened up, the aluminum Indy/Kodffel's 451 B-Wedge goes in the car.

  • At least its not a trailer queen you know drive it on the trailer and drive it off thats all the driving it see's

  • LOL! I know all about trailer queens and show poodles! Although this car does ride around in an enclosed hauler, it gets driven hard when it gets to the track. Look for more videos of this car this summer with it's new four-link rear suspension and new Indy/Koffel's engine.

  • 48 SECONDS OF HEVEN THANK YOU...

  • Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Wait til you see what we have in store for this car. More videos coming this summer once the car's transformation is completed and it's back on the track.

  • Great video! That's when cars looked like they had muscle. Not, this jellybean look of today.

  • Massively Over Powered Approching Roadwarriors

  • I have goldfish named Sox & Martin!

  • Mopar = Mo Parts

Mopar = Move over Pontiacs are racing

  • "Move over Pontiacs are racing". Oh jeeez. Break out the calenders.

  • I thought it was "My old pig ain't runnin'"!?

No offense. Like those cars. :-)

  • I thhink MOPAR stands for mostly old people and rednecks

  • Hey, we may be old rednecks but Mopars most definitely rule and all the rest drool. There just ain't no comparison!

  • Hell yeah!! it really stands for: Move Over, Plymouth Approaching Rapidly

  • WOW i bet you were up all night making that up.

  • MOPAR, Mostly Over Powered And Respected.

Interesting seeing that leaf spring wind up on take off.

  • Yeah it'll be even more interesting watching it launch with the new four-link setup!

  • I'll bet the trap times will drop noticeably.

    It looks and sounds great.

  • Thanks! I'm hoping the trap rimes drop too but they probably won't be just from the four-link setup. We retired the basically stock 440 that's been in the car for the past 21 years and will be replacing it with a B1 headed 512 MegaBlock. Now that oughta wake it up a little bit! We were going to put a big inch Hemi in it but Hemi prices are just plain ridiculous. We can be within 100 horsepower with the Wedge for about 1/3 the cost of the Hemi.

  • I figured the four-link would help it get better traction and launch faster, but I guess not.

Will that 512 drop right in or will you need special adapters? I ask because in the GMs the LS series engines dont drop in to pre-LS engined cars.

  • The 512 is dimensionally the same as a 440 so it WOULD drop right in except for that this engine is for use with a motor plate and has no provisions for conventional motor mounts so it's not exactly a "drop it in" thing.

  • I'm not familiar with what a motor plate is.

So barring the motor mounts how would you put that in?

Is the 512 just a bored out 440?

Do you guys have anything planned for brakes?

  • A motor plate is also referred to as "elephant eats", Picture a solid plate behind the water pump that connects the engine to either side of the engine compartment. It makes things a little harsh but you can launch HARD and not have to worry about any flex. We're also planning an independent coilover front suspension with rack and pinion steering and four wheel disc brakes.

  • You mean elephant ears, ah yes I've heard of that term. Would you have to make provisions in the frame for the mount points? Or does the SuperBird come with them? And the rear of the engine is suspended by its connection to the transmission right? Are you going with carb or FI? Maybe you guys can put dual turbos in the back where the mufflers are...muhahaha. That suspension setup you have planned sounds absolutely awesome! Is the car in the video your car? Is it an original SnM car?

  • Wow Sox and Martin were some of my favorites in the '70s, very cool car and vid

  • beautiful car!!!! love it. one of my favorite cars of all time!

  • Hey thanks! Your user ID brings back some fond memories. I bought a brand new 1987 IROC-Z 5.7 TPI off the showroom floor at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Michigan in June of 1987. I kept the car until 1994 and it was one of the funnest cars I ever had. Unfortunately, even though I only drove it on nice days, our Michigan roads pounded the daylights out of it and the car became a rattletrap. I often wonder what became of that car. I ran an awful lot of street races in that car.

  • ya these wisconsin roads are no where near better than those i can guarantee that. lol but i actually haven't had my camaro out on the road yet, me and my buddy are building the motor right now with 400hp and a slap stick 4 speed. i can't wait to get it out onto the road!!

  • Sweet! Be sure and post back when you get it all up and running. I did a GM ZZ4 aluminum head 350 crate engine swap in a '86 IROC-Z back in 1999 and she still drives the car to this day. It's a five speed and mad can it wind out in fifth gear. Good luck with the project!

  • thanks

  • so, what did it run?

  • 12.86@108.5 with an internally stock 440 that had been in the car since 1986. Car had headers, single plane intake, 750 Holley, MSD 6A and 11 inch converter and weighed 3,950 pounds with no driver. A testament to the brute torque of a 440. The 440 was retired at the end of this season and now lives on an engine stand. Bird is getting chassis makeover and 426 Hemi power and will be running in Hemi Super Stock this season.

  • damn, that's fast. it's hard to get that kind of weight in motion. cool car. thanks for the reply.

  • power windows?

  • Huh???

  • he means "electric windows?"

  • Yeah, I got that much out of it. I just had to wonder what kind of flaming idiot would ask such a retarded question. Then I realized it must have been some foreigner.

  • What a shame.

A big bird couped up on a 1/4 mile.

  • And just think, we're about to cut the whole underside of the car out and put a four-link in the back and a tubular coilover setup in the front, tie the subframes and install an eight point roll cage!

  • cool haha

  • im a big ford guy but i love mopars

  • god how i love that sound ........

no import can ever sound like it.

and if it can ,,then I'd be happy not to hear fuck en lawn mowers go up and down my street with 16 year old kids

  • Ford held out it's good stuff from the public. My dad had a fury 3 convertable that beat any ford or chevy (street, not circuit), factory stock. Mopar was generous to its people. But I still like mustang, not for racing though.

  • LOL my point to ford guys was that was the only mopar it did manage to best hey im only 21

  • I hear ya there. The only thing is that it's impossible to teach the Ford Dorks anything. They live in their own little world called DENIAL! Even after all these years, they still can't accept the fact that Ford could never and will never be able to hold a candle to Mopar. Hey, cool to see you're 21 and into old school Mopars! Keep the faith!

  • the talledega beat the charger 500 with the pushed out grill thats when wings and front clips changed for aerodynamics

  • LOL! Thank you Mr. Obvious for the wonderful history lesson!

  • mama mopar always built the best shit

  • its my super car ... look for the music of engine power , i wish one day to drive it

  • oh man listen to that engine sinnnnnnnnng!!!

  • its my favourite sound , the sound of power

  • People get excited about the new 600 hp Viper, these cars ran well over 200 and after banning them, NASCAR has sucked ever since.

  • Thats the beauty of "politics" , baby!

It doesnt matter what we think, only what someone in power wants.

  • All hail Ronnie Sox'd memory and here's to rubber on your quarter panel Johnny!

  • beeeautiful

  • I love superbirds. most favorite car ever.

  • if you go to eBay these things cost around $100,000 so to me here in Ireland thats around £56,000. that car would be expensive, the tax would be high, the insurance would be higher, but it would be entirely worth it.... RICHARD PETTY RULES!!!!!!!!

  • you know what the funniest part of it all is?...back when these cars were new,.. the dealerships werent able to even GIVE these cars away!! later in the gas crisis era, people were selling these cars dirt cheap!!!.... if we only knew then, what we know now right?

  • Ohhh yea!!!

  • Apparently - they are worth that much!

  • nothing that fords torino talladega could'nt stomp on the highbank ovals...........and did quite successfully on many occassion.not slaming any mopar by any means but they are so overated no car is worth a millione buxx, mopars, fords or chevys.

  • you just hating mae.

Apparently they are worth that much to many.

  • well the fords and chevys lost on the high banks and wing cars ruled thats why chebby and ford conspired and got them outlawed they couldn't compete.look up the stats mopar ruled in 69 70

  • If the talladega could be beat the super bird then why did the super bird get kicked off the nascar circuit..BECAUSE IT WAS TOO FAST!

  • pete hamilton won the 1970 daytona 500 in a superbird, and superbirds dominated all that year . where was your talladega? oh yeah he also won the talladega in 70 and dodge won it in 69, sorry

  • plymouth superbirds rule, mopars for ever
