Oscar was far more skillful offensively and defensively. He landed the harder, crisper punches and he wanted the fight more. That last round, I don't know what Whitaker was thinking. The constant clowning of Whitaker during periods of the fight may have swerved some rounds in Oscar's favor, Whitaker gave the last round away by clowning the entire round.
De La Hoya never really defeated a technical boxer, at least a technical boxer in his prime. But kudos for him for being such a good businessman. Whitaker got robbed against Ramirez, Chavez, and De La Hoya, otherwise his career would be looked at with better eyes today. Trinidad was the only one to soundly defeat him, and that was right at the end.
This fight has gotta be embarrassing for Oscar De La Hoya because Whitaker made him look like an amateur dodging all of his punches yet Whitaker is past his prime in this fight.
115-111 De La Hoya. First off, I'm not a De La Hoya fan or a mexican. I love defensive boxing but from what I saw, De La Hoya was doing enough to win the rounds. He threw and landed more power-punches. Pernell was only jabbing, I love jabs but Pernell's jab is not particularly powerful or effective. Oscar won 8 rounds plus Pernell got a point reduction for an accidental headbutt which caused a cut (WBC rules). I watched the full fight on another video, not this video which is missing some parts.

@SpaceHead99 I will say that I was very disappointed at the attitude Pernell displayed after losing to Tito. He was clearly beaten, but kept claiming victory. I lost respect for him after this. He should have owned up to the defeat. But prior to that night, his career was a thing of beauty. He is definitely one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. Without question, he was much better than Oscar ever was.

Oscar was far more skillful offensively and defensively. He landed the harder, crisper punches and he wanted the fight more. That last round, I don't know what Whitaker was thinking. The constant clowning of Whitaker during periods of the fight may have swerved some rounds in Oscar's favor, Whitaker gave the last round away by clowning the entire round.

115-111 De La Hoya. First off, I'm not a De La Hoya fan or a mexican. I love defensive boxing but from what I saw, De La Hoya was doing enough to win the rounds. He threw and landed more power-punches. Pernell was only jabbing, I love jabs but Pernell's jab is not particularly powerful or effective. Oscar won 8 rounds plus Pernell got a point reduction for an accidental headbutt which caused a cut (WBC rules). I watched the full fight on another video, not this video which is missing some parts.

@SpaceHead99 I will say that I was very disappointed at the attitude Pernell displayed after losing to Tito. He was clearly beaten, but kept claiming victory. I lost respect for him after this. He should have owned up to the defeat. But prior to that night, his career was a thing of beauty. He is definitely one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. Without question, he was much better than Oscar ever was.

@SpaceHead99 Pernell even gave Tito a better fight than Oscar. Pernell backpedals and counter punches (Ali did the same). It's not the same as "running"...it's a beautifully executed skill. But Oscar literally ran from Tito...and it was embarrassing to watch. At least Pernell showed bravery against Tito. Unfortunately, he was too old at that stage in his career. Oscar had no excuse...he displayed cowardice. Had he stood toe to toe, he would have been knocked out. He should be ashamed of himself.

He landed at a higher percentage per round. He landed over 100 more punches in total. A knockdown was "officially" scored in his favor. Yet he was at the bottom end of a 116-111 scorecard??? Corruption...plain and simple! Also, add to the fact that he was much smaller and much older...and he still accomplished what he did. Robbery!

The punch stats show who was the more active and accurate puncher (by a large margin). I was at the fight, sitting four rows back, and I saw Pernell win. How do you account for such disproportionate numbers on the scorecards, when Pernell clearly out landed Oscar? And why the champion's intro...when he was the challenger?

One can be aggressive...without scoring hits (as was proved in this fight). And the ringside consensus was that Pernell was robbed. My point is that even if you score the knockdown...then add to that how close the fight was (even from your perspective)...then the final scorecards show obvious corruption. Boxing is a dirty sport.

This was a WBC title fight, and at THAT time, WBC rules mandated that a point must be deducted for a headbutt - including accidental ones. Makes absolutely no sense to me; but then again, this IS the 3rd time Whitaker was screwed out of a WBC title bout (see: Jose Luis Ramirez, Julio Cesar Chavez).

@ alijah, as far as black boxers being slick, I think tyson would be the exception. He was as forward and destructive "With technique of course" as you can get. Pernells and Mayweather's slickness comes from the eastcoast boxing style. A boxer integrates all styles, fight forward, backward, defensively, offensively, in and out.

I was disappointed that Whitaker disputed that decision. But I was also a Trinidad fan, as well. How ironic that Trinidad was given a decision over De La Hoya...in a fight where Oscar ran from him (much like Oscar's fans claimed Whitaker did). And De La Hoya's fans had no problem disputing that one (which Felix WON).
