Just watched a lot of The Wire recently, I hope this series can match the writing and casting quality of that seeing as they are both from HBO, i'll be checking series one out soon.
people are only mentioning lord of the rings because it has swords and sean bean, this was barley a fantasy setting, take away the baby dragons at the end and the two scenes with walking dead people and this story could have been set in any real European country during the middle ages, the narrative of it actually follows that of many real conflicts.I can't speak for the books so id imagine it becomes more fantasy as it goes on but this series had little to no resemblance to something like LOTR

@echafaud I'd disagree, if you were to compare this to Lord of the Rings, the characters and landscape are much grittier and darker. While in Lord of the Rings they were essentially exploring a fairytale world filled with sharp contrasts between dark dungeons and vibrant havens, Game of Thrones has added an air of realism, the characters are not pretty, nor are the landscapes, and you don't know where everyone stands. It's not as black and white, it's Game of Thrones:LotR like Watchmen:Superman

The HBO series gave me the motivation to finish the first book (I was only about 300 pages in) so that I was ahead of the show. Now I'm quite a ways into the second. :)

It's also probably worth mentioning that the first episode starting with the White Walkers isprobably because the first book started with the White Walkers.
John and Robb should wear glasses, why did they laugh to the boy and his shooting. Stop at 0:26 and see Bran snipe that IGN Editor on the right like "Headshot"!

Tyrion is the best character in the book, But IMO, in that first episode he was outshined by Jaime, Jaime did the best I think, and even Ned gave a better performance, but time will tell maybe I'll like him better next time, theres so much potential there
i didn't think it was terrible but i also didn't think it translated very well to the screen, there is just way too much going on in the novels for 10 hours to do it justice.
@jawanza72 Eddard Stark should have been 35, and Catelyn 33-35 too. Fairley and Bean are 47 and 50 respectively. So, both are older than they are in the books, just as Robb, Jon, Bran, Sansa and Dany. All characters had to be aged up, because there are some scenes with Sansa and Dany that just cannot be portrayed with 13 (Dany) and 11 (Sansa) year olds. Bran should be 7, and it's hard to find such a young kid who can act. The age-up was done to everyone. And Fairley looks royal and acts greatly.
Sean Bean as Eddard Stark...wooo! Absolutely the best choice as patriarch of the Starks...just hope Martin writes Dance of Dragons before the series catches up...

somehow i didn't get around to reading the books (i hate PDFs for casual reading) but i watched this show, and now i don't want to, to avoid spoilers. totally hypocritical of me - i frown at people for doing the exact same thing (putting an adaptation before the original). it's weird to be on the other side of that argument for a change...
@CAARaeed Do read the books after the series. They're a great experience on themselves, and you'll LOVE to see Tyrion or Jaime from inside their heads. I recommend you to get each book after each season of the series is over.

More impressed with Dinklage than I thought I was going to be! Overall it was very well acted but nikolaj coster-waldau's accent kept slipping far too often... He really needs to work on it for further series in order to nail Jaime's character.
i really enjoyed this show but i felt that from a TV standpoint it might have been too slow of a premiere. but as a reader of the series i know this is how it begins so i cant wait to see such a faithful adaptation realized. I do think they shouldve done the drogo wedding night and bran falling scenes alittle better. Drogos scene seemed too much like he was forcing her (in the book hes very gentle to her) and brans scene felt a little rush. otherwise great start
I love how they included The Others in the first episode even though we won't actually see them again for a few seasons. Just lets you know that they have no intention of not going through with the whole story. AWESOME!
I love how you've apparently never read the first book, where they are in the first scene. They put White Walkers in the first episode because they are in the first book.

How would I even know that in the books they're called the others and not white walkers. I'm fully aware that the scene was the first in the novel, I figured they wouldnt include it because it's a back burner story until much later in the series and the tv show wasn't a go for more seasons yet. @darthchris19 i cant really speak for titanic, i havnt seen it, but the lotr triogy surpasses any movie franchise not just star wars...and fyi...no i dont like alien its lame....so is predator....well apart from the 1st 1...arnie rocked the shit in that one :D

any movie franchise? really?? its not that good. the only part of the trilogy i liked was: 1. battle at helms deep, 2. battle with the elephants where legolas rocked and 3. the last battle in the last movie! thats it. the hobbits kinda ruined the experience i guess.. oh and indiana jones trilogy (last movie does not count), godfather trilogy and the pirates of the caribbean trilogy are way better franchies imo :)

btw I disagree, anybody who can say that the Pirates of the caribean series is a good franchise dosn't know what good franchises are. The first movie was excellent and then the director must've got high and in his high he must've just Shouted: "Put explodey thingys in the next 2 movies, forget about a logical story that makes sense."

somehow i didn't get around to reading the books (i hate PDFs for casual reading) but i watched this show, and now i don't want to, to avoid spoilers. totally hypocritical of me - i frown at people for doing the exact same thing (putting an adaptation before the original). it's weird to be on the other side of that argument for a change...

@CAARaeed Do read the books after the series. They're a great experience on themselves, and you'll LOVE to see Tyrion or Jaime from inside their heads. I recommend you to get each book after each season of the series is over.

Hopefully this show will last, like Sopranos, not like Deadwood etc cause they ended TOO fast, in just 2-3 seasons.
This show seem so cool and I hope for at least 5 seasons.
Also this is a show that I buy as Box-sets, to own and watch like one long movie.

More impressed with Dinklage than I thought I was going to be! Overall it was very well acted but nikolaj coster-waldau's accent kept slipping far too often... He really needs to work on it for further series in order to nail Jaime's character.

i really enjoyed this show but i felt that from a TV standpoint it might have been too slow of a premiere. but as a reader of the series i know this is how it begins so i cant wait to see such a faithful adaptation realized. I do think they shouldve done the drogo wedding night and bran falling scenes alittle better. Drogos scene seemed too much like he was forcing her (in the book hes very gentle to her) and brans scene felt a little rush. otherwise great start

I love how they included The Others in the first episode even though we won't actually see them again for a few seasons. Just lets you know that they have no intention of not going through with the whole story. AWESOME!

@brothergrymm Actually I have read the first book and all the others that are out so far. How would I even know how little we see of them if I hadn't. How would I even know that in the books they're called the others and not white walkers. I'm fully aware that the scene was the first in the novel, I figured they wouldnt include it because it's a back burner story until much later in the series and the tv show wasn't a go for more seasons yet. Thanks for jumping to that dumbass conclusion though.
