Ali is the only heavyweight that I would rate above Joe Louis, with Marciano as a close second. Personally I think Larry Holmes is a bit overrated and Jack Johnson is probably top 10 but not top 5
gare.....81, I also cheked "rating the all time Hvyweights in 10 categories" by Monte Cox. It seems to be the most logical compass out there. As I researched; I urge u to0 chek this out. The outcome is shocking but if u can live with it so can I! PIM
@3kidat There is not one old timer who saw Johnson thru Ali who ranked Ali the best. NOT ONE !!! Most rank either Dempsey or Johnson as the best. Some would give Louis a chance. Concocting some BS scale & subjectively ranking it yourself means nothing.(regards to cox). Only fighters/trainers who were present to see these guys live should matter. Fleischer, Arcel, Teddy HAyes, Blackburn. They were there. Listen to them. Not these internet masterbaters who haven't put a glove on in there lives.
gare....81, I decided to call u on this one and checked 6 different boxing surveys for the best hvyweights of all time. This included the 2 I respect the most; Espn and Ring magazine. 4 rated Ali #1 and 2 Joe #1 so I have to give u props based on these surverys. However, ring magazine which had Ali #1 also had Jerry Quarry at #27 and Lennox Lewis #32!. I don't know what they were smokin that day but obviously at that time somebody got it twisted.
U guys(gare...81;only....) clearly are not real boxing fans neither ex-boxers. Speaking as a ex-amateur from Ali's time who qualified 4 the National GG, I can tell u this: almost every all time heavyweight boxing survvey rated by the experts have Joe rated # 1. Some have him rated #2. behind Ali. Obviously I only saw Ali live, but because many of the experts saw them both , I would have to concur with their opinions. PIM
The majority of boxing experts rate Ali as the best heavyweight ever, and the second best P4P fighter ever. Louis is typically ranked the second best heavyweight, and while there is no solid consensus on his P4P ranking, most lists I've seen rank him outside the top 5. Louis had a lot more support as #1 heavy before Ali's career ended, but that support has dwindled since then.
Stop pretending that anyone who doesn't share your opinion is "not a real boxing fan"...you're not fooling anybody.
@garethac81 Sorry to disappoint you, but most people (besides the fools who DON'T know who Ray Robinson was) agree with Ali, but the MAJORITY of boxing experts etc INCLUDING ALI HIMSELF Rated Robinson the greatest boxer of all time.
There left hook for the first knockdown, a couynterpunch, shows what a sweet technician he was, and why people call him the greatest. The other guy was in his face putting up a fight 'til then, but that punch took everything away. The beating on the ropes makes me think I'm watching Schmelling II. Eerie.
@alexfromgalax87 Ali was much more dynamic than Louis, quicker hands, much better footwork,he actually floated, much harder to hit, especially the early Ali,not to mention the psychology,no Louis is not above him,no
@onlyjoetee u compare different styles... yes muhammad ali was a runner, joe was a tactical fighter, movement depends on enemy ... come in , come out when its needed, muhammad ali gave away controle by running all time.. thats his style.. not very effective against people who hit hard and fight smart like louis.
and well, joe had definately the faster hands and was the harder hitter , no doubt about it, thats why he is rated as the nr 1 puncher in the hw division.
@alexfromgalax87 Power is NOT the most important thing in boxing,a lot of people dont realize this, science is!Ali didnt run,he floated in a circular motion around the opponent.how does that give away control when you cant even hit him?Joe louis was much easier to hit.NO he did not have faster hands than Ali AT ALL.Larry Holmes too is a better boxer than Louis
@alexfromgalax87 If you study form and technique, overall you'll see,Muhammed Ali Jack Johnson and Larry Holmes were better boxers than Joe Louis,i know you like him,but its true..
@onlyjoetee if u compare pure technique and fighting skill , jack johnson muhammad ali and larry holes are worse then joe louis, there was never a better technician in the hw division.
@alexfromgalax87 do you even know what the word technician actually means??you're a Joe Louis fan fair enough, but to say he was the best HW ever technically is bullshit and you know it!!
@onlyjoetee please dont talk shit , u dont know nothing about boxing if u put ali and holmes over joe louis.
a good technician in boxing shall have right sense of distance, what joe had. his movement was based on the agressiveness of the opponent, not just running and cicling and jabbing, like an amateur. a good technician is a combinationpuncher who punches to the head AS also to the body, what muhammad never did. a good technician can generate power from closest distances, thx to the stance
@onlyjoetee and yes , simplicity is the key to victory. joe louis did just like that. no runniing around no wasted efford ever. very strict and disciplined fighter with dynamite in this fists, imo he would know out ali in 10 and holmes in 8. Jack Johnson is different style , this would be more interesting too see, as i rate johnson higher as ali and holmes
@alexfromgalax87 I say one thing for the great Joe Louis tho,he was the best 1,2 combination specialist ever...boom boom and you were on your ass!!!!!
Joe would catch Ali and finish him off late.

@WillieG1990 is another youtube boxing "expert."
Ali couldn't handle fighters with fast hands. Doug jones. Jimmy Young.
He couldn't see their punches.
Louis had faster hands than any any heavyweight.
And he could punch.
Ali would be toast against Louis.
marcxopoco 7 months ago
@marcxopoco True, and Ali was a sucker for a left hook. Louis always struggled against dancing boxers though.
I think Ali on points unless he started clowing and Louis caught him.
DrJReefer 3 months ago
Retzlaff had an amazing record-- 52 knockouts out of 59 wins.
He had wins over Jimmy Braddock, Art Lasky, Jack Roper, Al Ettore, Johnny Risko.

Did you even read my posts properly before commenting? I already said Robinson was the consensus choice for all-time P4P #1.
garethac81 1 year ago
Wow...this must be a RARE reel of film. Nice to be able to see it.
And yes, to add to the comments below, Louis is definitely one OF the greatest, but it's quite a stretch to say he is THE greatest fighter ever.
Ali, Robinson, Armstrong, Pep, Hagler, Leonard...all those (and a probably a few others) would rank above him on most good pound-for-pound lists.
Just to be clear though...Louis = legend.

@garethac81 ray robinson greatest fighter louis is the greatest heavyweight he didnt have to say it tho like ali his 25 defences sez it all
