  • well i cant fight you on that bro you are right.

  • "You pretend you're better {than the arseholes you grew up with}"

Nice observation there Mr. Hewson. Very true.

  • Im so lucky to be part irish ^^ st patricks day! :) Galway baby <3

U2, The Dublineers, Pogues, Thin Lizzy!

    Happy st.patricks day!

  • Who the fuck put that dog-collared buggerer on at the end of this vid?

Shut the fuk up, and go kiss you Pope's 'brown ring'...ya fukin' slave.

  • THANK GOD FOR IRISH ROCK IT SAVED GOOD ROCK

  • @ThePookie27 I don't agree that those bands like the prunes, the blades etc. contributed to anything. They were shite. The Rats were shite, The Hype were shite. All shite. In the beginning there was Philo. And God saw that it was good ....

  • Thank you! Can't believe I've missed this. Very interesting with the gang of Lypton Village

  • This is a part of a documentary called From a Whisper to a Scream, the history of Irish Rock music. Yes Thin Lizzy is mentioned, just not in this snippet. Does any one know the title of the song The Virgin Prunes are performing in that bar scene?

  • Thin lizzy are the gods of rock. Ask metilca bon jovi. Etc etc etc. The all agree.

  • Thin lizzy were a brilliant band, better than queen say,if you compare both- lizzy were rock, queen were pop.Phil was a brilliant front man but drugs and a few bad moves by management cost them.U2 on the other hand had bothgood management -savvy!!!

  • Yeah, Thin Lizzy were REAL rock n roll and so underrated. No disrespect to U2, but Thin Lizzy was the best band to ever come out of Ireland, in my opinion.

  • @troubleontheline66 u are not telling a fibber on the if it was not for thin lizzy u2 would would not have even been heard of

  • Thin Lizzy???

  • @stevechavura wiki/Thin_Lizzy

  • Thin Lizzy is a real band. They should be in the rock and roll HOF. U2 b4 Lizzy, thats just sad! R.I.P. Phil lynott - The Real Rocker

  • they were little mummyboys and middleclass. They were terrified of the working class in Ballymun. Bono & co were self-loathing rich kids.

  • I think it had more to do with the idea that Ballymun became a center for drugs and violence, essentially right in Bono's backyard. Bono and his band were by no means "rich kids," as the clip of Bono's modest childhood house can attest to.

  • you can see Bono's leg reacting when he lies about his coming from violence comment.

  • Oh yeah, Ireland was an incredibly peaceful place to live in the 1960s and 70s. No violence whatsoever...

  • grow up

  • lower middle class ghetto?? i love u2 and bono and the edge but he does talk tosh sometimes

  • hahah little pack of tax evaiders boycott them till they pay their feckin tax

  • Ugh, another uninformed dolt. U2--the business--moved part of their company to tax-free Holland, as any smart business would do. You can't fault them--as a business--for being savvy. In fact, most of their business is done outside of Ireland anyway. As individuals, they continue to pay taxes. So shut up and be informed before you comment on things you don't know about. Makes you look like an idiot.

  • Exactly , any business , specially like a big band like U2 , money is most important . Great comment

  • While it'd be foolish to say that money plays no role with any big band, it's equally foolish to say that money is the most important thing for U2. The business side made a smart decision, so what's with the criticism? Being stupid with the money they've earned should garner the criticism, not making a savvy decision any business would do. The members of the band still to live and pay taxes in Ireland. As a musicians their resistance to stagnancy shows that their fans are is most important.

  • Well in a business point of view its most important but other no it shouldn't be

  • Of course it's the most important part from a business point of view. Would we expect anything less? Point is, U2 were already paying taxes all over the world even before Ireland instituted the cap. This "big move" is more minor than most people think. And the whole argument about Bono being a hypocrite for this move is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with the individual band members. They still pay taxes themselves and who knows how much in private charity.

  • Wow, you make one of the few intelligent points on YouTube and you get a thumbs-down. I think you sent one of the Tubers into shock just by spelling correctly.

I do agree with you. God forbid a band makes money, right?

Anyone who bitches about the money musicians make are probably just envious, and most of them would probably do less-than-good things with the money if they were making it.

With the work that Bono does to try to make the lives of others a bit better should be considered.

  • Look at Nirvana - Cobain was anti-establishment, but he knew that if a lot of people were going to hear his music, they had to be a financial success.

Granted, he was totally un-equipped to deal with the success, but he knew the reality of it.

Even a one person singer songwriter like Dougie MacLean/Kieran Goss - who have had hits - or like Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer - who's popularity never made it beyond the folk-fest set - they all need to be successful enough to get booked.

  • if this documentary has nothing to say about thin lizzy then its rubbish

  • Thin Lizzy & Phil are a big part of it - this is just a 10 min segment - it's nearly 3 hours long

  • Oh, thanks, Paul! So that's what Lypton village was!!

  • Bono says he was brought up on violence lol lo lol is this fool for real?

  • Yeah he lived down the street from a load of smack heads and boot boys and nearly got his head smashed in with a trash can...

  • Culturally on the fringes, I suppose - but then that's pretty much here, too! Heartening to her this.

  • Thin Lizzy, U2 OWN Guns N' Roses!!!

  • Must confess, I hadn't heard of The Blades until this. They were fantastic. I only wish I could find some of their recordings other than their myspace page or on YouTube. Oh well, I need a new quest.

  • Cool!

For other - The Blades segment begins @ 8:15

  • they were always making videos in Working class area's Trying to look like poor people when all they were was a bunch of little rich kids mummy and daddy give me money fuckin wankers

  • U2!

  • I'm related to Phill Lynott (:

  • Which band is at 03:38, 03:42, 03:49, 4:00, 4:09? I really wanna know.

  • "The Radiators from Space" Founder member Phil Chevron went on to fame with The Pogues. ...

I put a link under "more info"

  • Jesus, the Prunes and Gavin Friday were shite.

  • Was Bono not brought up in well heeled area known as Glasnevin, Cedarwood Road, He plays on the Ballymun bit a bit much, mind you knew him and Gucci as kids and do admire them both

  • judging by the accents of Bono, U2 and their mates, they were middle class.

  • It brings it all back...from Gaybo's face intoducing the Prunes, the brilliance of the Blades..brilliant

  • OK so where is the rest of this - brilliant stuff - remember seeing The Blades many times and U2 used always play on Saturdays at the Dandelion market - I think the admission was 50p. Please put the rest of this up.

  • No words... Judas.

  • Is there any mention of Thin Lizzy in this documentary?

  • Lots of time... they did not miss many Irish rockers that I could see... read the "more info"on the right top

  • very interesting indeed, I've never quite realized Ireland's importance for rock.

    thank you for sharing!

  • Great programme. Is there more? what is the mname?

  • Thanks for the reminder to put the DVD info in the "more info" box. This is from a program called "Out of Ireland - The Hit Songs & Artists of Irish Music (From a Whisper to a Scream) (2003)"

The DVD (which runs 158 minuets) is on Amazon and Netflix. It's well worth buyng in my book. No full videos though.

This is a very short clip, covering part of the late 70's - early 80's. The entire program does a good job of looking at the entire history of Irish Rock from the "Showband" era until 2000.

  • The reason I put this up is because so many people keep making comments on the "Don't You Want Me" video, that claim any guy who wears make-up is gay. I wanted to show them that the 70's & 80's had some different norms for musicians.
