You've got to read the comic. It's so much better than this very weak adaptation. This anime just sort of sleepwalks through the story without ever really trying to bring out what makes it unique. Just the same old anime gimmicks and shortcuts that detract from the story's impact as it unfolds on the printed page. Plus it leaves out so much context and character development that explain a lot of the things that people often scratch their heads over when they watch this.
I'm just saying that this is a very well-written story, but you'd never get that from this anime adapatation. People who have never seen the comic watch this and go "WTF?" because it filters out much of the buildup and subtley that makes the horrifying elements make sense in context. Yes, it's still a very disturbing story, but a very complex, unique one. But all the usual anime gimmicks and lack of any real animation kill the whole thing.
This anime is so messed up. I'm not criticizing it, just saying. I mean with rape, gory death, and I mean, these kids are all in 6th grade!
