we use that stuff at work all the time at caterpillar to shrink bearing races and pins, from a press fit to a slip fit, its awesome to play with to :-)' by the way you make an awesome chem teacher, from the looks of it you really keep everyones attention and know how to make the class fun
This is like my highschool chem class, one day towards the end of the year out teacher brought in like 10lbs if dry ice and let us make bombs and stuff
This is a high school chem class... just a fun demo. The countdown was just a super lucky break. I did the demo 7 times that day, and this one the countdown was perfect, so it is the one that made the video! I probably could not do that again if I tried.
Yeah... I didn't put the Chemistry in the video... but trust me, they had to endure one class period of lecture and powerpoint about low temperatures and expanding gasses before they got to see this.
i like how the american education system is more based on experiments than ours (hungary), it attracts more children than what we do on chem classes. however, i think that an average hungarian high school student knows much more lexical information in chem than an american student.
Trust me, it's not very common for a high school teacher to do a demonstration like that. When I was in HS during labs we would assemble molecules from balls and sticks and sketch them. That's how much fun we had... It all depends on the teacher, you can get chemicals no matter what country you are in, well, almost, for sure in Hungary there should be no problem at all.
@Shumeshi my chemistry teacher made nitrogen triodide (which is extremely unstable and a touch-sensitive explosive). he also fired cannons several times during the year (in the classroom), and he blew up balloons full of helium once or twice. we also combusted a gummy bear using potassium nitrate and created rockets out of hydrogen and oxygen.
Haha, at the end of the vid, you could hear some students asking him how he counted that too, he just said he guesses every hour and that was the first time he was right ha.
You know you can hold that in the palm of your hand by the cap and nothing would happen! but dont listen to me, do some research! It is pretty cool though!
Its not fake. I work in bottling and have seen people injured by this. (A small amount of nitrogen is put in tea and water to make the bottles hard for packing). One example, operator goofing around fills bottle with nitrogen puts lid on and tries to sling it. It blew up while he was in his wind up and cut his fingers pretty bad.
You've never seen "Let's try Cesuim?!" actually it's just an inside joke in College Chem (every year) at my high school. Pretty much the bigger the atom of Alkali metal (or further down column on a Periodic Table) the more reactive they are. These metals actually rip the water molecules apart. They spin, the flames turn colors and look like they dance on the water. But the more reactive, the more violent. In the video we watched Cesium explodes the beaker of water.
dude its not fake.. think about it... its liquid nitrogen at 320 degrees below 0 F right?... looks like its around 70 - 80 degrees outside... so a liquid will probably turn into a gas when it enters an area about 400 degrees hotter than its liquid point... and when u seal the gas into a compressed area (like a bottle) the bottle will eventually burst
So, this is for a highschool chemistry course? Your students are lucky, I wish MY highschool chemistry instructor had as much interest in the material as he did being an asshole to the students :/ I certainly hope your students appreciate what you're teaching them. I think I'm the only person that came out of the course having actually LEARNED something other than "Copper burns green".
I didn't know when it would blow. Sometimes it takes 10 seconds, sometimes it takes 40. Depends on the quality of the bottle, I guess... and maybe the amount of nitrogen in it. I just got lucky!

i really they taught chemistry like that over in the UK xD

though there's no chemistry in this particular experiment...

i didnt say there was, i said i wish they'd teach chemistry like that over in the UK.
And if you had read the video description you'll learn he was doing this for his chemistry class

but yeah, that was not dry ice... did you see anything before he poured it in?

An incredibly huge explosion, its so explosive that the government regulates it. Its like a depth charge in a toilet basically

i wouldn't try to explain anything to someone who thinks a bottled liquid nitrogen explosion is fake, its a waste of good information.
