oh god there was nothing all that mysterious about his later years...he grew old and became basically an old English guy who liked to paint and garden. he retired. he just thought those paparazzi were idiots who wanted to perpetuate something he felt he did years ago and had no desire to dwell on. by all accounts he wasn't a lunatic in seclusion all those years. he just became a regular guy again. it wasn't like what happened with brian wilson circa 1973-76.

The truth is that the mystery Pink Floyd and Syd's story provokes in the very people who are fan's of Floyd in those late 80's felt they wanted to in some way contribute to helping Syd, but what they did was the exact opposite. They were called Syd hunt's and they weren't done with the intention of hurting anyone, but people wanted to see a real living legend who way surpasses the Bowie's etc. But it all got maniacal. I never went on a Syd hunt, but had I been offered in 88 I sure would of gone.

I feel sad watching this. "Syd" had been dead since he left the music industry. By this time he had returned to being just Roger. I just don't get why people would have wanted to bother him. If he was making an effort to get back into music, then that would partly justify the followers. But he made no such efforts, he just wanted to be left alone to do his painting or shopping. His expression is not one of confusion, it's of total disdain for these people who just would not leave him alone.

I highly recommend watching both parts. It's intermixed with 60's footage of the times. The music is live in the studio, and amazingly improvised. Best jam ever!

You should seriously check out their "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album if you haven't heard that, either. The 2007 remaster with the mono mix is the best version.

I got into Floyd heavily from 1985 to present, and in 1992 I began to see a friend go down like this. He even looks not unlike this now. The music and the legacy of Pink Floyd became synonymous with many themes in my own life, especially having been a semi-professional musician off and on since 1998. My friend who got schizophrenia and went downhill was the "Syd" of our circle, and could easily serve as an inspiration for songs and musical concepts much as Syd became to Pink Floyd.

very sad what happened to syd, but why can't people move on. most of Barretts music was pretty awful and unlistenable. Some of his english, whimsical, childlike music was pure genius, but wouldn't have lasted past the late 60's. I suppose the only great shame is what could have happened to the sound of floyd if the band had progressed with syd instead of Gilmour. But saying that, as far as i'm concerned Gilmour shaped floyd into the greatest rock band of our generation!
