The F15 was built because of the fear and overestimated abilities of the MIG 25 in the west. The SU 27 was built in response to the F15. The F22 was built in response to the underestimated SU 27 that was assumed to be a cheap copy of the F15 which turned out to be false… All one hugely expensive and vicious circle that produced some beautiful aircraft in the end.

Heeem.... su -33 don't need ether catapult nor ramp to take off from a carrier deck.

To take off with out ramp it just need to start off form the back of the ship. the ramp is for even shorter takeoff distance.

The reason is mainly thx to the hibrid canard configuration, the plane does not stall in conventinall way allowing it to "vector thrust".

@sabbathian That's 6500kg from a runway on land. It's not getting off the Kuznetsov with much more than 3500kg's of fuel and/or ordinance. It's still an impressive plane. The ski jump just limits it to some degree.
