i can't believe people still don't get this movie! sofia coppola wanted to make almost like a modern day marie antoinette, that's why we have new wave music and a shot of converse shoes in the movie... it's too show that marie really was just a teenage girl. it's not only about the historical details
I love how the soundtrack(new wave/post punk music) fits well with the film and how the color scheme for this film all kind of blended to make a great accurate film that is actually appealing :)
When I was 12 and I saw the film for the first time, I thought it was awfully inaccurate. But it's only now at 17 that I realise just how much of a genius Coppola really was, she captures the whole party mood so well. We understand that all Marie Antoinette was party, and it seems like a hell of a lot of fun in this movie.. LOVE IT <3
@lucasvilegas ...robespier radical thinking killed the queen and the king of France including a thousand of innocent lives including himself...the main problem in that time was famine but when national assembly was formed they dont even solve the problem and they ....for me Robespierre, Marat, Lafayette, Napoleon they were Nazi than Democratic....the Anger toward the King and Queen was initiated by slander and lies printed by the people who hated them not by the people...

The French Revolution was lead by influential free masons, you can actually see the "All Seeing Eye" -which is a masonic symbol- on the "Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen" of 1789.
this film had some of the most incredible blocking, and visuals, the music was also really good. If it had a better story line it would have made more money I think. I felt it made a better music video then a movie. But I still own and love it.
Ive been a "fan" of Marie Antoinette, and the movie was a big disappointment ): it didnt picture her actual life Q_Q but the dresses were very beautiful and the cakes were ... omg ...
@Hyakushi it is a stylized, opinion of her life. after all, anyway, even the "most knowing historians" just simply opinions of people or things. no one can ever really KNOW someones life. especially, that private and long ago of one....
@MowgliX If u consider french history as a mess, u must be not swedish like written on ur homepage !
If u were, u would know that France gave Sweden a king !!! And can u explain a country with a mess history has given a napoleonic king to Sweden ????!!!!
@bobduvar But I am right you know. France's history is a bloody mess, and so is every country's... Just think about Germany for a moment, well actually there were two Germanys for a while there... The whole world has always been a bloody awful mess. Britain had a few hundred years in the sun, but most of the time it's been carnage and mayhem, burnings at the stake and so on. The whole world is utterly horrible. ;)
@bobduvar All of human history has been, quite literally, a bloody mess. There have ben short periods of relative peace and stability, but as a whole, its not been that great, except for the privileged few.
@bobduvar It's true of course France gave us a very competent king, Jean Bernadotte (1763-1844), one of Napoleon's generals (he was Marshal of France). As king he was known as Carl XVI Johan, or in French, Charles XIV Jean de Suède (he was also king of Norway). Now, this was a very smart fellow, and proved to be a popular and competent king. He turned his back on his master, Napoleon I of France, and ran his own show very skillfully and didn't care much for the French revolution.
I really love this movie!! Kirsten Dunst is an amazing actress and I think she's the only one that could've played the role as Marie Antoinette. She's beautiful in my opinion (Kirsten I meant).
Really, I love this song and Siouxsie And The Banshees dearly, but "Fireworks" would have fit the film much better than this. It's a great song, but a song about skinheads causing a ruckus in a Chinese eatery doesn't quite fit a French masquerade.
No, good riddance. She was a traitor to the French republic. Although they didn't have evidence at the time, after her death a lot of evidence DID emerge which revealed that she and her husband had tried to make foreign (non-French) forces invade the country for some succession of land, in return power would return to the king.
Robespierre, now there was a man that was beheaded too early. Thanks to him democracy for the people got a firm hold. A brutal but admirable man.
I don't know for sure, but this movie was certainly avant-garde in the way that it introduced a really modern style to a historical film, it showed Marie Antoinette from a teen point of view (which she was) and the whole mixing contemporary songs with the soundtrack, was fantastic. That's why I liked the movie so much and when I heard this song on the film, it blew up my mind.
My brother and I adore this film its just so enchanting! The soundtrack awes me as well except "I want candy" I wish that trash wasnt in the soundtrack but everything else is perfect!
@kontrollmops Yeah, it's quite interesting she's like the French Cleopatra! she was the last French Queen and Cleopatra the last Egyptian Queen. Very interesting, didn't know she was the last French Queen until I saw the movie.
@xamiquai From what I know, SHE WAS THE LAST QUEEN OF FRANCE. In relation to Cleopatra, Cleopatra was the last Emperor (as in females with lots of influence and power). If you still don't get it, I recommend you google it or open a book. Good day.
You're right with Marie antoinette being the last queen, i forgot that the wives of Louis XVIII. and Charles the X. died before being a queen, my fault. But at least you can also say that Eugenie de Montijo was kind of the last queen of france, although she was an empress.
And i don't think that Marie was a "french cleopatra", because of not being involved in politics so much like cleopatra.
Und das nächste mal nicht so zickig, Kleopatra I. von Amerika ;p
It's me again. I also forgot thinking about Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily, being the "Queen of the French" and wive of Louis Philippe I., the last king of france or "king of the french". So maybe i'm right. But at least you decide, Kleopatra ;)
Cleopatra was smart and educated by the very best tutors in the antiquity, and she was a cunning politician who made both Julius Caesar and MarcAnthony support her and the Egyptian cause. The real Cleopatra was NOTHING like Hollywood portrayed her with ElizabethTaylor
MarieAntoinette was comparatively clueless when it came to politics and had little understanding of theRevolution
Cleopatra was the last descendant of thePtolemaic dynasty,MarieAntoinette was AUSTRIAN and married into it
Several thousands faces the guilloitine at the time in France, and she was one of those that surely did deserve it. After all her reckless spending AND treason of the French republic would have led to exactly the same punishment in ANY other country in the world at the time.
Although the trial against her was a travesty neither her or the king had any place in the new republic. A victory for democracy if I may be so bold to say so myself. Should have happened in Prussia too
@McLarenMercedes Well, the new Republic certainly did not survive either. Thus, the Thermidorian Reaction, which did not come close to vindicating those who were victims of the Reign of Terror. Saint Just, and Robespierre, the hideous radical pigs that they were, were LUCKY to have only gotten the guillotine, as they forced upon many. And many, WERE innocent. The new Republic was an example of Socialism GONE STINKINGLY BAD!
@irshgrl500 Long live the Revolution! The Republic eventually brought an end to the rule of aristocrats on the Continent and brought universal education and equality under the law to all the people of Europe. Took over 100 years to do it, but it happened. Fuck the royals and aristocrats, fucking parasites deserved to have their heads lopped off, and someday it will happen to the unproductive exploiters here too. We have a bunch of Romanovs here living out their last days as the empire decays.
that isn't marie though...that's Lamballe, a friendish person of hers....she was brunette in the movie but then for some reason she replaced her hair with that giant gray wig...never understood that
@kookyChimes Actually, though the biography is quite accurate (and very well-done) the film is only loosely based upon Antonia Fraser's work. There are several errors in the film, some of them intentionally done for the sake of the movie.
of course she was a different person, than shown in the movie. but since she is dead and everyone else, who knew here too.
but the aim of copolla was not to show the real story and truth (cos nobody knows it exactly), but to emphasize the fact, that marie antoinette and her her husband were far too young to lead a country that is in such a situation...
when Louis XV was crowned when he was 13 and france was in a crisis (thanks to louisxiv and a bit of filipsII, filipsII was making extra paper money for hisself so there was an inflation) i thought that louis xv was making it better but louis xiv was older than his granddad when he was crowned, i guess maybe he could handle with it...
This comment made me laugh so hard. Okay, first of, a lot of Americans have descendants from Europe, it's common if you ask left and right are they European? Many will tell you their many origins are European. Second, ANYONE CAN KNOW WHO MARIE ANTOINETTE IS. That comment is possibly the most...okay I'm going to go with, self-centered I've ever seen. Okay, dude it was just stupid. I can't even describe the feeling of stupidity that comes from it.
