That's beyond reporting. That is just embarrassing. What a complete circus act OLeary is. However, this is the kind of rhetoric prevalent in the current political system in the US. A: BARK B: BARK BARK ad nauseum.
Hedgen is a voice of reason and deep humanity and he is mocked by some bafoon on CBS. Shameful.
it's because Kevin O'Leary is a millionaire entrepreneur. Of course he's an extreme right wing anti-OWS dick. He shouldn't be on CBC, because he is politically and financially biased. Canada used to be so much better than this.
You know, I actually kind of like Kevin O'leary. I saw him on dragons den and on the cbc a few times and thought he was kinda like simon cowell: critical, but with reason. Now, he just looks like an ass.
See this is the type of rhetoric in interviews that we don't need. What and ASSHOLE. What even happened to discussions where one can be civil. Talk about "leanings".
The like/dislike ratio of this video pleases me and really does reinstill my faith in humanity...
Continue to protest peacefully, brothers and sisters.. I can't join you all in NYC, but I'm most definitely taking part in occupy Chicago (and I'm a full time student!).
He just meticulously explained all the banking crises vis a vis the corporate "nut ball" criminals issues in just a little over 5minutes. At the same time the politicians have taken 5years and still counting to just tell us what they know or don't know and what they will be doing. KUDOS Chris!!!
I say that because of the values he held so tight to get to the position he is currently at.
One large thing that is missing is his backstory for O'Leary in this critique of the interview(or mayb i missed that)
He IS one of the one percent. Of course he's going to follow suit with being against it. He is also only an advisor on the show this interview is taken from, not a reporter. This due 2 his mass amount of money he has in neat little wads uphis ass
Chris Hedges is the epitome of a broken clock. I like his views on many issues, but he does have that element of liberal spinelessness every now and then.
He didn't call him a nut case, he called him a nut bar, and I'm not going to call him an asshole, I'm going to call him an ass hat. There was only one decent thing he did, and that's what he didn't do. He didn't constantly yell the guy down like O'Reilly.
@hampusheh I know, I've read the communist manifesto. he was and is one of the most historical significant figures but he was very crude and believed in violence. There intelligent people who are tools, Marx was a tool because he believed his philosophy could create a worker's paradise and people like Hedges truly believe in paradise in an imperfect world instead of facing imperfection and making the best of it.
@PatriotNotGovernment Unfortunately most political thinkers prior to Gandhi have been fairly slack in matters of violence, as long as it's for a justified "means", the same is true of Machiavelli and Hobbes. Marx's and Engels communist manifesto is probably Marx's worst writing, Das Kapital is much more astute, which I believe is what Hedges is referencing. He predicted that when capitalism is treated like a God (which it is in US) it eats itself. Where does Hedges say he wants a paradise?
@hampusheh the whole idea of communism is a worker's paradise. Marx warned against capitalism but that was only because he saw a perfect solution. No real capitalist will argue capitalism is PERFECT but in an imperfect world it is the BEST system for the individual and for freedom. Marx believed in a worker's paradise and thus his criticisms of capitalism came from a viewpoint that capitalism was far from perfection when in reality perfection is an impossibility.
@PatriotNotGovernment Well yeah, Marx SOLUTION was utopian and quite ridiculous, but his prediction wasn't, don't throw out the baby with the bath water as they say. I'm not sure capitalism is the best system for personal freedom, but as I don't have an alternative at this stage I'll go along with it.
While Kevin was a total asshole here, you also have to remember, he is not a CBC anchor, he is a businessman who happens to have a show on the network. It was an awfully terrible choice to have him conduct this interview though. Very offensive.
@WillPovver kevin is always a ass when he talks to anyone dealing with some big corp is or wanting to screw over Canadians .When he was talking to marko bibic bell PR man.He pretty much said i hope u screw Canadians for all they are worth over the User base billing they where trying to get the crtc for force on everyone.
O'Leary is sorta the token heartless jerk you put on a reality TV show. Easy to see when you watch him on Dragon's Den (or the US version of Shark Tank?) Money is what he's about, nothing else really.
The CBC has a disclaimer after every episode with O'Leary that specifically says that Kevin O'Leary's views are not representative of the views of the CBC.
@Klentir This is why I think we need to break up America. All the extremists on the right, we shove down south & collapse them all into TX & OK where they can make a new country called 'Merica. Everyone else, all the moderates & left wingers take the rest of the country & sort of merge w/ Canada for a few years, adopting their laws. After around 10 years, America splits and rewrites the constitution adding in whatever we liked about Canada in a direct democratic vote.
Let's not pretend the Occupartiers know why they're there or what they're doing. They were just bussed in to the latest happening. They're not even coherent.
I'm embarrased that this is the impression Chris has of CBC. CBC is not even close to Fox News, in fact, I've heard them be called "Liberal" by some very far-right people I know up here, but I think he's overreacting to say he'll never appear on CBC again because Kevin O'Leary said he "sounds like a left-wing nutbar?" It's Kevin O'Leary. Come on.
chris hedges is an outstanding journalist, he can't waste his time debating obvious truths with people who have no intention of listening to reason. Cenk, you argue with the unreachable for a living, of course you like to mix it up with those people. Hedges has other things to do.
Kevin O'Leary is an EXTREMELY rich businessman and tv personality. He stars on a show on CBC called Dragon's Den where businessmen (and one woman) look at business ideas and decide whether or not they will invest in them. It's actually very entertaining, and he is one of the funniest and most entertaining ones on there. Hearing him call people "nothing burgers" is very unsurprising. In reality he is not an anchor of any sort of journalistic background, he is purely there for entertainment value.
@treysparker While I'm not exactly sure whether or not he truly believes what he is saying, I do feel that his motives are not just for entertainment. However, I think the motives of whoever gave him the job on CBC were because he is entertaining. That was the point I was trying make (I wish I could post longer comments). :(
Though I did find the description of him on this clip a little underwhelming. referring to him as an anchor is in my opinion a misconception of what his job is on CBC.
" Nothing Burger"?.. Is that Canadian interveiwer speak?.. This is the type of conservative broadcaster who would end a interveiw and tell his audience he was JUMPED by 5-no-10-15 leftwing nuts and he fought them all off.. A million times (again) No one wants a capitalist or financial institutions coup d'etat influencing/manipulating government policy or revenue distribution.. Representation becomes plutocracy/oligarchy.. The towns sheriff would be the lawyer, judge, mayor, doctor & shop owner.
I think they have higher journalistic standards in Canada, so therefor what Chris said and did had much more of an impact on how the anchor was going to be dealt with afterwards.
Hedges is wrong about a) the real cause of the financial crisis and b) why canada has always been safe.
I work for a Canadian bank at a very high level. Trust me, this myth that Canadas banks are great because they dont gamble is complete nonsense.
The collapse didnt happen 'because' of huge shorting activity, nor did it happen because of credit default swaps, those were consequences of the real cause -
Of course the world would get along just fine if banks& corporations never existed Both are groups that pooled their wealth to control the control that comes with controlling an inordinate amount of the wealth in that exists in the world. Banks & corporations need the rest, much more than the rest needs them. That's why their apologists keep pinning the goal is to rid the world of bank & corporations. Banks will exist, but they R likely to B true community bank
I never liked O Leary, I watched him on the shark tank and he always was a mean character who will attack anybody bragging about his once in a lifetime billion dollar deal.
notice how in canada, even if we disagree, we let someone finish their point.. i cant count how many times ive seen american news anchors shouting over top of someone with a different view to overpower them and discredit their opinion. this movement has come into canada now and i hope it grows on both sides of the border. together we can do this!
As a Canadian I am truly embarrassed that CBC allowed this bullshit to happen. We don't do our media like that up here, or at least so I thought. I hope this Kevin O'Leary douchebag gets fired, they should send his ass down to fox news where he belongs.
@XileLord I was just up in Canada and i gotta ask, what is with all the right wing opinion shows? I swear that was all i watched. There was one particularly egregious tool with a mustache that seemed completely out of touch. Other than that loved it up there.
@RancitdSyle Well our conservative government (what we consider right wing) is about as left wing as the democrats in the U.S. For example we don't debate things such as abortion, gay marriage, allowing gays in the military, the bible in public schools etc anymore. We have a lot of socialist elements in our country aswell and combined with capitalism it works great for us. It does strike me as odd that we have far right shows, the people need something to laugh at I guess.
I was actually a bit upset when Hedges said this would be his last interview for CBC. He is incredibly intelligent and articulate. I really hope Chris changes his mind after this national outpouring of apologies, and hate for O'Leary.
On the one hand going on these shows might give him a window of opportunity to speak to those on the opposing side, but at the same time you give these interviewer hacks legitimacy as valid unbiased news sources by lending your name to their station.
For example, what would be the gain on going on Fox News and be edited to look like a fool and used as a tool? Better just to paint them as propagandists and refuse to go there.
Chris Hedges is old school bad-ass....He has been handing these guys their heads on plates for years now....Hedges is one of the world's great jounalists, thanks Chris and Cenk...
"No one has ever given me anything," so says just about every pseudo-right wing twit you'll ever talk to. Well, we've all been given something, some unearned gift. And unless that gift is the power to stack the rules in your favor, the next best thing is the gift of a free and ethical economic system in which everyone plays by the same rules. That way everyone has a chance to prosper and grow. This was the gift of America until a generation ago. It's been tossed away on Wall Street.
People don't realize how far right Canada is slipping in these last years. O'Leary, Sun News, Dragon's Den, Harper...it's getting worse. Canada isn't the hippy colony America thinks we are.
@AikenBruce CBC is not privately owned. it is crown/public owned corporation and i still question why O'Leary is there. he should've worked for Sun News Network.
Kevin O'Leary is not a Canadian Journalist... keep in mind he's a entrepreneur and investor... so I'm not surprised that he would have a bias before even going into this 'interview'. The problem for CBC, is now they look like FOX news, which is not what we want up here in Canada at all!
To be fair O'Leary is not a journalist, he is a Business man/Venture Capitalist. He appears in a business show as part of a duo in which he is a very right wing, and his partner is left wing. He's actually been really successful as a business man, so it makes sense to have him.
Also, at least O'Leary allowed Chris to answer. On Fox he would have shouted him down, and force is opinion down everyone's throat.
hedges is another great fellow socialist. here's hoping OWS will fruition into a glorious socialist revolution! they already have developed the means of sustainability and comradery! True socialism and anarchism not dictatorship!
He's funded many small businesses in Canada and has greatly helped Canada's economy. Cenk needs to do at least some investigation into the people he rips.
@Jakedastudly He is an asshole, 100%, he is rude to people on Dragons Den and only helps if he is guaranteed to have screwed them over and gottent he best of the deal, you need to do your homework, do you ever watch Kevins other interviews on American TV, his is a me me me nothing for the poor prick, an son of poor imigrants to Canada, he is hated by the CBC staff and most of Canada. Did you know he lives in Boston USA and has since he sold his Canadian business for 3.5 BILLION
Even his fellow "dragons" on Dragons' Den to some extent or another hate his guts.
Arleen Dickinson doesn't like him at all because she finds him to be an "insufferable jerk", Robert Herjavec and Jim Treliving both find him "exceptionally harsh and grating at times" and Brett Wilson just straight up doesn't like him (Kevin's cruelty was one of the reasons why he left the show this year) and the new guy Bruce Croxon apparently doesn't like him either..
@Jakedastudly You overstate O'Leary's importance to the Canadian economy.
He is an independent business man and entrepreneur. His purpose is not to help the Canadian economy, his sole purpose is to help HIS economy, and his motive here is to dismiss and belittle anything that threatens that purpose.
He is a friend of the banks and wants to portray his allegiance to them for his own purpose. He's not a journalist, he's not unbiased on this issue, and therefore he speaks without integrity about it
@DaytonaRoadster Marx predicted the future collapse of capitalism..... good thing our economy is in great fucking shape, or we'd be proving that fucker right......
@tannersanta oh spare me, any idiot with the most basic knowledge of economics knows free markets have peak and valleys, dont be an idiot, this is nothing compared to the 1930s, or the economy that created the Boslevik revolution in Russia. Marx was wrong about damn near everything..deal with it
I'll bet that after this miniscule recession ends, our future will be even better because the invisible and almighty hand of the free market will take care of everything... yay!
@tannersanta protip: Dont Glen Beck on simple facts, a single point does not mean you have to agree with every illogical extreme of that side of an argument...also, you got told, deal with it
@DaytonaRoadster You're right, it's not like your points are contradictory, and how did I get told? I've been agreeing with you on every point... maybe I'm glenn beck......
Sadly we do have douche bags in Canada like O'Leary. We have our conservative hate mongers too. he's probably an Albertan.

Hedges is wrong about a) the real cause of the financial crisis and b) why canada has always been safe.
I work for a Canadian bank at a very high level. Trust me, this myth that Canadas banks are great because they dont gamble is complete nonsense.
The collapse didnt happen 'because' of huge shorting activity, nor did it happen because of credit default swaps, those were consequences of the real cause -
The private Federal Reserve Bank / Fannie Freddie
And btw, we're hardly regulated.

O'Leary: "You want to get rid of all corporations. You're crazy! This guy is crazy"

As a Canadian I am truly embarrassed that CBC allowed this bullshit to happen. We don't do our media like that up here, or at least so I thought. I hope this Kevin O'Leary douchebag gets fired, they should send his ass down to fox news where he belongs.
XileLord 4 months ago 5
@XileLord I was just up in Canada and i gotta ask, what is with all the right wing opinion shows? I swear that was all i watched. There was one particularly egregious tool with a mustache that seemed completely out of touch. Other than that loved it up there.
RancidStyle 4 months ago
@RancitdSyle Well our conservative government (what we consider right wing) is about as left wing as the democrats in the U.S. For example we don't debate things such as abortion, gay marriage, allowing gays in the military, the bible in public schools etc anymore. We have a lot of socialist elements in our country aswell and combined with capitalism it works great for us. It does strike me as odd that we have far right shows, the people need something to laugh at I guess.
XileLord 4 months ago
I was actually a bit upset when Hedges said this would be his last interview for CBC. He is incredibly intelligent and articulate. I really hope Chris changes his mind after this national outpouring of apologies, and hate for O'Leary.

Chris Hedges rocked.
I am mixed about hes last comment though.

Chris Hedges for the win!
CBC (unfortunately, embarrassingly, worryingly) for the epic fail.
junkandcrapamen 4 months ago 2
Kevin O'Leary is not a Canadian Journalist... keep in mind he's a entrepreneur and investor... so I'm not surprised that he would have a bias before even going into this 'interview'. The problem for CBC, is now they look like FOX news, which is not what we want up here in Canada at all!
jdellio 4 months ago 2
Chris destroyed that ape.
thewiffenpoof 4 months ago 58
Hedges is fucking awesome. And since when did the CBC become Fox News? I guess it shouldn't surprise me with Harper in office.
devourerofbabies 4 months ago
To be fair O'Leary is not a journalist, he is a Business man/Venture Capitalist. He appears in a business show as part of a duo in which he is a very right wing, and his partner is left wing. He's actually been really successful as a business man, so it makes sense to have him.
Also, at least O'Leary allowed Chris to answer. On Fox he would have shouted him down, and force is opinion down everyone's throat.
CBC was not happy with O'Leary that day.

He's funded many small businesses in Canada and has greatly helped Canada's economy. Cenk needs to do at least some investigation into the people he rips.
Jakedastudly 4 months ago
@Jakedastudly He is an asshole, 100%, he is rude to people on Dragons Den and only helps if he is guaranteed to have screwed them over and gottent he best of the deal, you need to do your homework, do you ever watch Kevins other interviews on American TV, his is a me me me nothing for the poor prick, an son of poor imigrants to Canada, he is hated by the CBC staff and most of Canada. Did you know he lives in Boston USA and has since he sold his Canadian business for 3.5 BILLION
derberg19486 4 months ago
@derberg19486
Hammerhead547 4 months ago
@derberg19486 Who cares about Dragons Den? All of Canadian leftists does not represent all of Canadians.
Jakedastudly 4 months ago
@Jakedastudly You overstate O'Leary's importance to the Canadian economy.
He is an independent business man and entrepreneur. His purpose is not to help the Canadian economy, his sole purpose is to help HIS economy, and his motive here is to dismiss and belittle anything that threatens that purpose.
He is a friend of the banks and wants to portray his allegiance to them for his own purpose. He's not a journalist, he's not unbiased on this issue, and therefore he speaks without integrity about it
