She was very lucky there was a film crew nearby filming a documentary captured the entire thing. It's not an officers job to distinguish whether a person is capable of hurting them in a fight. When a person resists arrest the officer's job is to escalate. You can add the "she was 72" or "she was a woman" or pretend it happened for not signing a traffic ticket, but none of those factors make this inappropriate. She broke the law, refused to comply with an officer's requests, and resisted arrest. Sounds like the officer did what was appropriate.

What this means is simple to understand. After being told to comply with an order & refusing, it is considered less dangerous to the violator to use electroshock or chemical spray devices than to go "hands-on."

You Do Not have to sign anything or give your consent to appear in court for a stupid traffic ticket!! Just tell them so. I mean they are tazing the cattle over any small infraction or perceived non-cooperation. Best advice would be not to yell, use profanity. Logically tell them you have the right not to sign any contracts, bear false witness against yourself or consent to something you are unsure of.

It's a HUGE benefit to liberty that instead of having to be handcuffed and hauled off to jail, you can just sign a ticket and handle it later, whether it's only to pay it off or to show up in court. This greatly contributes to liberty by not making every infraction require immediate transport, a great removal of one's liberty.

Usually I'm against the police, but in this case it isn't clear that the officer was in the wrong. Other than a vague "this is all lies" you don't really hear the old lady's story, and I know that a lot of people, especially women, will not comply with police orders, thinking that the police officer will not actually do anything. She probably thought no one is going to taze a little old lady. I'd like to see the dash cam, but at this point I'm not really convinced the officer was wrong.

It's not an officers job to distinguish whether a person is capable of hurting them in a fight. When a person resists arrest the officer's job is to escalate. You can add the "she was 72" or "she was a woman" or pretend it happened for not signing a traffic ticket, but none of those factors make this inappropriate. She broke the law, refused to comply with an officer's requests, and resisted arrest. Sounds like the officer did what was appropriate.

What this means is simple to understand. After being told to comply with an order & refusing, it is considered less dangerous to the violator to use electroshock or chemical spray devices than to go "hands-on."

In 2001 in the case of Atwater v. City of Lago Vista, the Supreme Court ruled that handcuffing and arresting a motorist only for a traffic infraction is reasonable and valid.
Therefore, in order to effect that arrest, use of force is authorized if the individual does not comply. Electroshock or chemical sprays are first on the list of responses.

@lannlann I think you're seeing it a little backwards. The signing of the ticket is an option in place of being physically transported to jail. It's a HUGE benefit to liberty that instead of having to be handcuffed and hauled off to jail, you can just sign a ticket and handle it later, whether it's only to pay it off or to show up in court. This greatly contributes to liberty by not making every infraction require immediate transport, a great removal of one's liberty.
