I own a TLM 102 and am actually about to sell it. It's a fantastic mic, but every time I've used it over the past several months it keeps getting replaced (usually by an MXL), and everybody involved in the sessions tends to prefer the MXL.
If I've got phenomenal sources (players), give me a bag of SM57s and I'll be happy!
@notyourrevolution If you are looking for smooth, accurate, neutral, they are a good choice. If you like brighter/hyped top end, you might much prefer the Neumann TLM103. It has the smoothness of a Nuemann, but the hype of the MXL that you probably like. Neither is right or wrong, but most of the mics being built today (cheap and fine mics) are building in a tremendous amount of brightness to them. This TLM102, is much more natural sounding- it sounds great with great sources (and rooms)
@MrMutron It is definitely one of them for sure. We sell a nice array of world-class sounding microphones in this price range, and would love to discuss specifially the kind of work that you are doing, your existing mic/preamp line-up, and help assist you in selecting the absolute best choice for your particular needs and budget. You can reach our team of experts that focus on recording chains specficially, by e-mail at mics@soundpure(dot)com
@notyourrevolution Hey man, I would love to buy your TLM 102 off of you. Sound Pure, please don't block me, this isn't intended to be spam. If it's still available, please let me know!
@rootvalue We won't block you- but you should give us a call, our prices on NEW tlm102's are sometimes even lower than what we see online for used ones. Give us a try, hit the "quoteback." Plus, you get the security of doing business with an extremely reliable company, and a full Neumann USA warrranty as the original purchaser, which is worth a lot.
@RayParker Thanks for the comment, we will try to get some of that out at some point in the not too distant future- stay tuned. We have tested this microphone extensively across a variety of sax, and it does consistently well- captures the full range of the instrument in a very smooth and musical way.
@viceadmiraal61 Why don't you guys ask us to send the high resolution recordings- we are glad to do it. Are you guys listening on quality DA converters? OR, just through your computer sound card.
@IBMua Unfortunately, I think that must be on your end- no one else has complained or experienced that in over a year and 34,000 views. First think you can try is switching to headphones, and lowering the output volume on your sound card. Also, youtube has a good bit of distortion in its algorithm, we are always happy to send the high resolution files to you, just shoot us a request and we will fire them right out! Hope this helps resolve your issue.
@soundpurestudios He didn't sound like REALLY DAMN distorted, of course!))) I've exagerated a lot.))) But thing is I've watched this video in like "pro" headphones and I REALLY have to say that the mic sounds not much better than my $100 Samson C01 in means of distortion. That's really blowingly far away from the original true sound of Sax. I think it's in the way other category than stuff that JB, Gaga, Cyrus, Spears, etc use 4 vocals. Not 21-st century definately.
@IBMua I think that you need to listen to the high res audio... we are convinced that the distortion is either on your end, or a result of the youtube compression that you are encountering- you can choose to watch the video in HD which might help the problem that you are encountering, or just send us an e-mail requesting the highres files. If you have a distortion free system adequate for playback you will not hear distortion in the high res files, we are convinced. This is no $100 Samson!
What a nice sound !!! I'm looking for a mic to record classical trumpet on this range of price? Do you recommend this one? or something else? I'm coming from a Cascade Fat Head II ribbon mic but I'ld like something more precise....Thank a lot.
@Emanuelejazz Hi Emanuele, this is a much more accurate sound than the fathead, and is typified by its smooth frequency response from top to bottom. We have some other alternatives for trumpet that we will be displaying online sometime relatively soon (in the next month or so), but we can discuss exactly the room/preamp and other aspects of what you are doing to help get you to the perfect solution. Do you want to give us a ring? Toll free 888-528-9703, or e-mail sales(at)soundpure(dot)com
@iFlickTV Yes, if you are looking for a very smooth, neutral response curve from the microphone. This one isn't hyped like their TLM103 (which can also often sound overly bright/harsh), but rather the TLM102 is a more natural response curve. Feel free to give us a call if you are looking to make a microphone upgrade, we use these, and many other high end mics in everything from hip hop production to classical. You can call us toll free 888-528-9703, or e-mail sales(at)soundpure(dot)com
@soundpurestudios Actually, I think it was the simplicity and the quality of what little gear you used that made the difference...but who knows. You were definitely using some quality stuff. The sax player's ability helped make it sound good to. He's good. Keep posting more stuff. It's helpful for me to make smart decisions! Thanks again!
@jawsrock1 We will absolutely keep posting, but keep in mind, at Sound Pure we are not only selling the gear, but actually using it here in our studios every day. We only get to post an extremely small fraction of what we are using, even though we are continuing to add more videos. If you are ever looking to upgrade, or have a conversation about gear with one of us experts, we are here for you. Our pricing is the lowest around, but our advice comes from a place of actual use of the gear
@kgiorgos The biggest difference is that the TLM103 is much brighter than the 102. AS a result it can often sound harsh, brittle, and a bit unforgiving, but there are applications where it excels. in general, we have found the TLM102 to be more neutral, controlled, and musical on most applications, even thought the 103 is indeed more money... makes it a remarkable choice for the money. We have great pricing, feel free to call to chat more about the mic or to pick one up: +1 919-682-5552
@jeabo0adhd The tube mode, even when driven hard, isn't going to give you the type of texture and color that you would get from a "vintage" power starved tube preamp like a UA 610, but it will absolutely round out and give a little more warmth onto the recording. It is subtle with the tubes on the Millennia, but you aren't going to sacrifice any of the wonderful detail that the Millennia offers with the tubes!
@brose1994 I spoke to Matt last night about your inquiry- unfortunately he doesn't have anything that he knows of that he can recommend. Matt studied seriously Saxophone at NYU, and has quite a lot of professional performance experience in that arena as well- he has been fantastic about participating in our videos (did you see the latest vid with him playing sax with the Charter Oak e700 microphone?), but he doesn't work for us full time or anything. Thanks for the comment!
Id like to hear this on Piano and Vocal...you havent put up videos for this yet...its aparant that Neumann is trying to compete with the price point of a KSM32...people might as well make comparisons there...Id rather have a KSM32 than the TLM103...and I can have 2 of them for the price.
There were definitely a handful of applications where the 103 was strong, but this microphone is just way more versatile, and in our limited experience with the mic we were getting great sounds on a lot of applications. Check out the drum video if you haven't, but we hope to release some vids on piano and acoustic guitars (as well as classical guitar) from our initials tests. Pretty great results... especially given that this mic is not expensive. Thanks for your comment.
This is looking great so far. Do you think it would be suitable for brass instruments as well? I do a lot of trumpet and flugelhorn recordings, as well as small classical chamber groups as well
Thanks for your message asking about the TLM102- we will shoot you a personal message, but in short, we think that it will be a really excellent choice for brass- smooth, creamy, and full range. Wish we had more time to spend with the first ones we got, but anxious for the regular stock to show up here and really put them through their paces
