I dont think he ever intended on taking Roma itself but rather to kill as many romans as possible. After Canne he didnt realy have enough man power to do so anyway. and he was definantly in my opinion in the top 5 generals ever to walk the earth, but i alsow think the his ability to command was really held back by the Carthaginian armies being infirior to the romans. i mean he was really the only gerneral in Carthage's history to put up a good fight
@TheSmacktasticSMACKO if he were to have soliders equal to the romans then he probably would have taken roma and mabey even won the 2nd punic war for Carthage
Ive noticed that my spartans have low quality resolutions, even if i put everything on max they are low quality (like when their arms and legs are pointed needles)
in war there's always the unexpected, Hannibal won at Trebia, lake Trasimene & Cannae against Romans but failed to take Rome & the Romans won at Zama but secceeded in taking Carthage. Carthage had great warriors but i think without their war-elephants, those battles might have ended abit differently. Elephants caused panic & even on their own sometimes.
the reason Hannibal did not take Rome, was because the senate in Carthage would not give him more men, and the reason Hannibal won so many battles, was because the romans did not respect him as a enemy, they looked at him as if he was a bug
he was on his campaign to take Rome, he was battling the Romans in Italy itself but the Romans used other methods to weaken him first & then defeated him at Zama & it wasn't easy to succeed.
@Suppressingfire Hannibal just did'nt have the resources the Romans had. Hannibal's armies were mainly mercenaries, Numidians, Spanish, Celts.. He was defeated at Zama because the Numidians cavalry changed sides. The Roman armies were mainly Roman and Italian with subject state and allied auxilaries. They also had an enormous manpower reserve; even after Cannae they were able to raise armies of large armies; estimates are they had 1 mil in potential manpower reserve.
Hannibal was a great tactician but mediocre in logistics which is only part of being a "great commander' The reason why I say this is because with him failing to build a siege train (no I dont mean a railroad train) he was unable to siege Rome after his flawless battle at cannae.
Bteween those you claimed genius only Hannibal is the real military Genius and don't tell me Scipio is a one of them simply he was lucky and followed his master's tactics and returned the Numidian cavalry to his side to be able to win in Zama otherwise he will be mentioned as a dumb in history.
Yes what he did was easy, BUT! Could you have thought of it? Think like you are in the situation. Outnumbered 20.000 vs 50.000. The Carthaginians are commanded by a general that beat you some times before. And then think of your tactic. I guess you wouldn't think that clear when you are in his situation.
Are you joking !!! plesase don't try to change history I know Hannibal is not European that's why you don't like the idea that he beat the ass and humilated rome many many times ( you greatest Empire ) but try to read again the history of Hannibal and Carthage and you can start watching this I couldn't find better to open your eyes and specially your mind.
I'm not saying I dont like Hannibal. He is a hero and northen afrika was almost part of Europe. If I cared about if he was european or not I would have been more about the germanic tribes because Im dutch. Dont say things you cant know about. Im not changing history Scipio beat Hannibal and THATS THE WAY IT IS! Now you insult me and I dont like that. I study ancient history so dont say you know it better because YOU DONT!
"Scipio beat Hannibal and THATS THE WAY IT IS" that's the point you studied history in the wrong way you should learn it from an objective point of view, maybe Scipio you eternal Hero beat Hannibal in the battle of Zama but don't forget Hannibal beat Rome not once many times and the most famous one was in Cannae. **Hannibal** the Greatest General of all time !!! EVER.
@Kippenbestaan Hannibal ranks as one of the greatest military leaders in history along Alexander the Great, Julius Caeser, Genghis Khan and Napolean. Hannibal was one of the first to use strategy and tactics in war, and Cannae is considered a tactical masterpiece still studied in military schools. Scipio would be considered a great commander but never in the same class as Hannibal, and I've never heard anyone consider Marcus Aurelius a great military mind, (he was very much a philosopher).
@SFbatteriste true, but I was only pointing out the fact that the guy was a good tacticion. Yes Hannibal was better but I think Roman generals are being under appreciated, after all they conquered most of the known world at that time.
Excuse me for my English but I'm not from an English speaking country.
@SFbatteriste True, but still Scipio Africanus is among the four commanders who NEVER lost a battle (the other three are Alexander the Great, Khalid ibn al-Walid and Jan Žižka). On the other hand, Scipio was learning from the master.
It has nothing to do with your comment. In case my last two comments weren't clear... I like Total war, I like history...HOWEVER, I don't like the music. That is all, take it as you will, I just felt like saying that.
lol, you should check out the battle of Cannae. Hannibal had 25k soldiers and the romans around 75k. He "sucked" them into his center and encirceled them and killed 30-50k of them in 8 hours which means they killed like 8 romans a second
@methestofilis Surrounding the enemy made many armies win a war. Hannibal, in the battle of Cannae really used this strategy and it worked perfectly.
Damn man there are so many soldiers and dead bodies and still no lag.I need a better video card.Mine sucks, because my PC is fine i only got a shitty onboard chip.
hannibal lost about 5000 at cannae, not a huge chunk of his army, but still significant. also hannibal never used phalanxes, he abandoned them in favor of flexible formations.
This is completely inaccurate i'm sorry to say. The entire Roman army, except for the cavalry, was encircled completely annihilated. The didn't "flee" as you said because they were completely surrounded. 80,000 Romans and allies died that day, slaughtered by Hannibals men who number less then half that. Truely the greatest military victory of all time.
What was a legend? Sacred Band? Despite the fact that the archeological evidence stacks up with what we know about them? Shit, what does that make dinosaurs? All we've got for them is archeological evidence, not even anything written. So they must be legends right?
Cmon guys, this is no where for gay talk. If hannibal would of heard two homos talking gay in his ranks like you guys he woulda stuck pikes through your god damn bodies and put you up on display for the whole army to see that there was no place for homos in his army.
serious, from history's point of view, gay was pretty common in Rome, Hannibal's army may hate Rome, but at least they see it a lot. People at that time didn't hate gay and there wasn't even Bible or Chris yet.
I never said anything about the bible or Christ. Your not talking to an idiot.
I know my history, I know that this was around the 400 BC era and I know there were gay's back then..
But all those facts put together don't certify that Hannibal would have tolerated gay's in his army. Hannibal was one of the greatest leaders this world has ever seen. A leader such as Hannibal would not stand to have any disadvantage whatsoever, especially in his own ranks.
men what are talking about,i'm not gay 46 years old and i know that one one the most fear unit in antiquity was the SACRED BAND COMPOSED of 300 gay men who were couple.
alexander the great who was also bisexual ended their endless victories at battle of charonea.a statue was erected by alexander's father in honor of their courage.everybody knew that those 300 men were gay,but real warriors honor courage the rest is artificial.but you're too full of hate against gays to understand that i guess.
Every heard of Spartans? Homosexuality was so important to them they practically institutionalised it. And they still had the shit beaten out of them at Leuktra by the Theban Sacred Band, another group of homosexual soldiers. Clearly, being gay is no disadvantage. Alexander the Great was bisexual at least, and if you'll remember, he actually won his war against the Persians, whereas Hannibal eventualy lost.
So fun to see people making fun of my video saying "Omfg, gay music" When they can't make a movie to outmatch mine. Don't talk the walk if you can't walk the walk...
extreme mod? That was just a custom battle fought in Extended Greek Mod. People often confuse this with Rome Total Realism, since both mods use the modding legions mod.
i thought the Battle of Cannae was supposed that the Carthaginian frontline be lined up in a crescent formation? and the centre is supposed to collapse. plus the elite infantry at the flanks was supposed to be deployed at the back of the frontline not at the extreme flanks OF the frontline? so when the centre collapse, and Hannibal retreats & regroup, the Roman centre would punch thru, and the elite infantry would swing towards the flanks of the Roman main body?
It would have been nice if they would have shown the swamp area. The last moments of the battle has the romans in almost knee high water with no mobility. The water turned red from all the killing. They say that some of the last Romans drowned themselves to avoid being buchered.

How come when I play the way i win with carthage is just mass producing tm or the fodder mercs and then outflank the shit out of the enemy??? I've never seen 2 iberian infantry stand up to even 1 hastati unless i flank???!!! idk maybe it's because i have the 1st vers
You know also that Hannibal chose to rather put his own life in danger by staying with his men in the middle to increase their morale and fighting skill and avoid them routing.
Well done video Teslarn, a fine tribute to one of the greatest battles of all time. What actually occurred was that the Romans were so packed together in the battle that most of them couldn't even use their swords, which led to their slaughter.
If you know anythin about Carthaginian and Roman military history, you should know what was going on there
The battle is that the middle units keep the romans put, while the carthaginians on left and right form a line covering the romans making a 'U' around the romans
After a while the cavalry arrives to complete the formation that is almost like a box around the romans.
The Romans had nowhere to go, so they were slaughtered.
The Battle of Cannae was the biggest defeat ever for The Romans
I dont think he ever intended on taking Roma itself but rather to kill as many romans as possible. After Canne he didnt realy have enough man power to do so anyway. and he was definantly in my opinion in the top 5 generals ever to walk the earth, but i alsow think the his ability to command was really held back by the Carthaginian armies being infirior to the romans. i mean he was really the only gerneral in Carthage's history to put up a good fight

You know also that Hannibal chose to rather put his own life in danger by staying with his men in the middle to increase their morale and fighting skill and avoid them routing.

Well done video Teslarn, a fine tribute to one of the greatest battles of all time. What actually occurred was that the Romans were so packed together in the battle that most of them couldn't even use their swords, which led to their slaughter.

my tac is to make a weak line at the middle.
when the enemy attack and the ´´weak line`` will break and pull back
but the flanks remain strong and become stronger. the romans will be surrounded
