Had one of these years ago - 1970 maybe. My roommate thought it would be funny to loosen the fork nuts so that when I hit the first bump the nuts flew off and I got a facefull of fork oil. I was less than thrilled. He laughed his ass off.
I also had an orange '69. More memories of frustration trying to get the thing to start. I broke three starter gears and fought the side case off to fix it with sent-for parts. I was 16, money enough only to piece it back together, not to have someone get it to start right.
Loved to ride it, though--my first bike. I thought it was a cool old thumper that didn't sound anything like the Japanese bikes everyone had then.
fantastic, second bike i ever owned back in 72, my first was a BSA C15,(bought in 69)
i remember mine had a habit of throwing off the clutch!! used to have to take my tools to work with me, and tighten up the clutch during my lunch break so i could ride home, never did cure it, mustve gone through hundreds of tab washers,
and i still ride today, never did get round to learning to drive a car.
it WAS the woodruff key , I went through dozens of em, about 4 a week, I cured it in the end, before I sold it I hammered the end of the shaft over so it couldn't come off, hehe I WAS/AM a top class bodger,
Wish they weren't such a collectors item, mine was a 250cc 1969-70/orange tank & side covers. I'd hunt down another one if it were cheap enough & restore it..great little thumper!!!!
That's a great bike. I bought a '69 reg. in 1971 when I was 16 and it was my first motorcycle. Same model, same colour but with the twin leading shoe front brake. I passed my test on it and loved it till the engine blew up in Wales. Aaah those alloy con-rods. A rebuild and then a part exchange for a Beeza 650 Thunderbolt, which again junked a con-rod and piston in Wales. Happy memories of thrashing that Starfire along the Welsh roads. Those old Beezas! But what the heck they had character!
first road bike i ever had , leaked oil everywhere , slow , shook, and mine seized up . as proud as i am to be British these were a load of crap .
