  • man, you look like a goat

  • wow, everyone is so angry here

  • i thought it was called flat picking cause it was popularized by lester flatt?

  • @Shredderfrank Nope, you are wrong.

  • Great vid offering a lot of knowledge.

  • lol

  • Thanks man, good tips.

  • "Don't get stuck with one thing cause...that's a sign of old age!" Good advice! : D

  • These are some very good techniques to develop! Thumbs up

  • Thank you Reno. This is great advice.

  • @bluescountryfolk then you make one

  • guitar has mush more possibilitiesthen banjo srry my english

  • wow, lighten up people! good basic direction for those getting started, Reno - thanks.

  • the man is teaching, if you don't wanna learn it, fuck it - but show him some respect, this is music anyway

  • "we sit and practice this as much as you can stand"

  • My favourite thumb-pick? My thumbnail as it happens! The index is too important and dextrous a finger to be left with only the job of stopping a piece of insensitive plastic hitting the deck. Probably a personal thing but I find it quite sensuous to wrap my claws around the strings rather than use prostheses

  • @Rikk303 This isn't about using a thumb pick but a plectrum held between the index finger and thumb. And you right about using asll your fingers to get more control and varienty - but you'd never compete with banjos, fiddle, and other flatpickers in a band by just using your fingers to play the strings.

  • @ChristopherDowning You'd never compete with banjos anyway, so just give up! :)

  • soooo baaaad cap.... get some lessons. both ur hands are all over the place.

  • joker!

  • I know he is the one that needs the lessons.

  • haha, i'm just playing, and i agree with you.

  • whiner.

  • He's gotta be doing something right, he's got more than 23000 views of this video. I am better than some guitar players on You Tube and some are better than me. So I am always slow to criticize.

  • lmfao!! reading y'all comments!!

  • learn to control you pick with precision do do do do BUM!

  • @gingerleyham ..yea...its a bummer.....he doesnt sound like he has any more control of the precision of his picking as i do....plus half the time i am drinking beer....i miss as many as he does.....anyway..that aint the point....he should just say play the mother fucker....you will figure it out

  • @freeman2545 You know, I have been to a lot of bluegrass jam sessions, and not once have I ever heard one bluegrass musician be an asshole towards another. Not once. obviously you are no bluegrass musician, you are a obviously just a fucking troll. Your brand of self entertainment is not wanted, needed nor appreciated here. Go away.

  • @AnthonySHall i dont even know what the hell your talking about....

  • @AnthonySHall ....no idea what i said to piss you off....but i dont give a shit.....i cant find any other comment by me here that was not nice...any way...my mother still loves me.....i cannot ever remember being unkind to onther artist...bluegrass or not...man.....and i have been trying to be kind to everyliving thing....so tell me what the hell i said to piss you off.....or not.....if i did say something mean...i am sorry....

  • @AnthonySHall ...and i am not a bluegrass muscian..i aint that good...but i am a songwriter....and i aint no troll....i got tons of original material on my channel...most sucks..but there are a few good ones....if this is your video...it sure looks like you got a lot of comments about something not being right with it..so you got a lot of comments to answer today.....

  • @AnthonySHall Not my video, I just know that you aren't a bluegrass musician, because a bluegrass musician is helpful and kind. I've never met one that wasn't actually. You obviously are not. This guy is way better than I am and wether he is sloppy or not, I can learn something from him. After all, what is the point in talking bad about the guy? Wether you intended to be or not, you are a troll.

  • Expert Village is a ghost town.

  • Expertvillage fails again

  • Competing with the other instruments? Are you stoned?

  • other stringed instruments, besides bass, have almost the same frequency niches as the guitar and when they're all played at the same time, like in bluegrass, they mask each other. that's what he means.

  • well that was a waste of time :P

  • Whoa nellllllly. Wrong. Volume is only a primary focus if you play with musicians who don't know to use dynamics and back off when other play. You don't "compete" and need to play loud. Playing hard and loud creates tension and takes away from being fluid.

  • do u play bluegrass???

  • Yes, very much so. Click on my user name we have more than a few videos on here.

  • I go to a lot of bluegrass jams and am in a band, most of the time when a guitarist is soloing, no one can hear him. Usually it doesn't have anything to do with others' dynamics, the guitarists needs to play louder because he's surrounded by naturally loud basses, banjos, and fiddles

  • No, I don't buy that and know otherwise. Watch any tony rice video on here. When he takes a solo you hear only a little mando chop, bass and that's about it. Jammers need to understand that all the instruments have their own volume level. You NEED to back off on a quieter instrument's break. You can only play so loud. Then you're digging too hard and lose fluidity in your right hand. Period. End of discussion.

  • I understand what your saying, it's common courtesy to back off the whole 'trying to be heard' thing when it's the other musicians' time to play, but I think what he's saying here is while the instruments are being played at a volume they are all heard at, your instument must be loud enough to stand out, the band can't all quieten down just so you can play at your level, if you get my understanding.

  • If guitar is taking a break it's the lead instrument, the other instruments need to compliment that lead, but during a break the lead instrument will probably have to increase volume or step into the mic (if plugged in). As a banjo player that sometimes means I quit playing during a guitar break, or play a soft roll that does not step on the lead. The same goes for vocals, when someone is singing the voice is the "lead instrument" an all others should support it. Otherwise the "feel" is lost.

  • i understand where you are coming from and you are right, but he isn't talking about breaks or solos but just playing in general. usually a dobro, or a banjo is going to be louder than a guitar, they are just naturally louder instruments than guitar and you need to be able to cut through the mix. yes aside from this there are dynamics you have to take into consideration and what each song calls for.

  • I have been teaching myself play bluegrass, with endless hours of practice. And what you say I have found to be totally true: If you try to play louder and have to dig hard to do it, your right hand begins to miss notes - becomes less accurate- and you actually go slower
