I do not trust SSD technology yet. I have a bad experience when my former USB flash drive damaged my data without any feedback to the system... it pretended the write operations as succesful but the data got lost (damaged files).... so the point is clear: stick with magnetic storage solutions!!!
@JetJL very true, a lot of people haven't come to realize this yet. Load screens will be faster, probably only a couple of seconds, but that's it. If you're building a gaming rig, spend most of your money on a gpu, that's all you really need.
15-16 seconds faster dude. It's ideal for netbooks. As long as you're not using graphical intensive stuff which you shouldn't be doing on a netbook. Flash is the way to go. no moveable parts either with a solid state drive.
I own 1 as a travel pc (Blk w/12GB SSD, 2GB RAM). It's not the quickest pc, but serves its purpose. They're netbooks, not desktop replacements. You can type up a report in a jam and email it while enjoying the simplicity and ease of its store-and-carry ability. My 17" Dell (won't buy again...) is clunky and much less convenient to say... bring on a trip, on campus, tote anywhere. Would you take a minibike on a cross-country road trip? Why not? Because that's not its purpose. Word, kid?
now a days, it is not worth it. too expensive to such a little difference. what about fucking 8 or maybe 10 seconds of your life "spent" on waiting your pc do thing? aww, fuck the expensive technology
I would rather give up speed of a SSD for the roomier hard drive. The speed is nice, but the lack of space and price make it useless for now until they come out with sizes over 200 GBs.
that is a hell of a statement, bro. sayd everything. fucking too expensive for gamers and common users, even for enthusiasts if might be a little too expensive. if it lowers at least 50 bucks, i may a couple for my desktop. and just in case, there already are models with 256gb and the newest ones, got 384gb. but their prices rise above the fucking 300US$!
The way I see it, there will be a few little quibbles about what is better for about a year or so, and then SSD will wipe HD off the map for the most part. Most SSD's are already faster, but they are coming out with new ones that will be 4 times as fast as hard drives. They are just super expensive at this point for the 4x ones. But in a year or two... At least reasonable ones exist for now.
I fully believe SSD is faster, but even though you said the HD's were bit for bit the same, they wee not. The one on the right was busy waiting for a finishing processes. Which means it was going through something different than the on on the left. Changing AutoEndTasks to 1 in registry would fix that. But yes, I see the startup was much faster on the SSD. And the new SSD's out now, 8 months later, are even faster and larger. I look forward to even better ones. Some are now twice as fast!
ssd 's maybe fast, but they had high prices, for low capacity, and hdd's last longer than ssd, so i will like to stick to hdd until ssd goes down in price and up in capacity.
You must have read something dated. It's a currently known fact that SSD's have a longer life than hard drives now. And I've been reading for days on this. I've seen it in more than one place that it's true. It also depends on type of mem that is used. As for prices I saw a 64GB for $119 somewhere. And being that some of them are twice as fast as a HD, it's worth it. Put the OS and some games on it, and then leave the big stuff on an extra HD.
thats not true the ssds last much longer cuz there are no moving parts that can ware down like a hard drive where in time files can get fragmented soo thats why
Quick question. I got my 901 (4+16 SSD) Feb 09 from Amazon. Newer 901's don't have ZIF connectors. You have to buy a PCI-e adapter with a ZIF connector on it. How old are those eee pc 901? jkkmobile is how i know about the pci-e zif adapter.
If you need one of those connectors, you can get them on Dealextreme for just under 4 bucks. Only the very first few Eee 901 batches had ZIF connectors.
the ssd was only 32 gig, whilst the traditional was 80 gig. I believe that the equivalent versions have a similar pricetag. The only problem I see with such a small SSD is that its unlikely to be able to fit an install of a 64 bit operating system (64 bit installs tend to take alot more room on the HD than 32bit... though they should also run faster.)
Windows installations tend to get larger over time. Add onto this service packs, updates, rollbacks, backup partition, and software which insists on being on the same drive as windows (*shudder* there still are a few) and you need a fair amount of space. sure you *could* install it on a small HD, it just wouldn't be a great idea in the long term. This is ofcourse rather a moot point since the price of larger solid state drives is falling rapidly
Isn't it kind-of pointless to put a 64-bit OS on a netbook that only has a 32-bit processor? The eee 901's intel atom 1.6 is only a 32-bit processor. If you load a 64-bit version of 7, it simply runs in 32-bit mode. I believe they will likely make a version with a 64-bit processor (though I suspect the price will be higher).
this has gone vastely off topic, the original discussion was on running windows 7 64 bit on a 32 gig HD, with a discussion whether or not the HD was big enough.
For what its worth I believe that Asus will switch to 64bit with the introduction of windows 7, since microsoft have implied that 64 bit support will be their priority (and rightly so) - though HD size will be unlikely to be an issue due to the falling prices of larger solid state drives
However, my eeepc901 hasn't got an ide whatever adapter for the ribon tape there. AFAIK that was a feature of some preproduction models, care to comment?
I agree .. ssd is THE future. i just hope the prices on ssd will decrease significant in the near future... it just has so many advantege. faster boot, lower battery useage, faster write/read speed aso aso.
@icsamerica hello do you know if i can change the ssd to a hard drive. I know ssd is faster but mine is just 8gb and i dont need speed for doing school work.

@tomelliott9 no it will allow you to boot up your game faster but gaming performance is usually based of your processor, gpu, and ram.
