The idea that emotional connection with a story serves those in power is explored in accessible detail by Augusto Boal in the opening chapters of Theatre of the Oppressed. The wikipedia page on 'Anagnorisis' outlines elements of Aristotle's ideas in this regard. The structures that Adam Curtis describes, particularly "that which makes people aware that internet is not innocent", is, I believe, an example of Anagnorisis. I wish there was a way to argue this in person.
