Thank you for posting this. What a beautiful and appropriate song. I have lived away from CR for 14 yrs, but still consider it home. Almost 2 yrs later, I'm moved to tears watching videos. CR has made a lot of progress and there is still lots more to go. I hope my hometown continues the recovery process and rises up bigger and better than before!
To look back on what this town experienced...while I sit here and type...it still breaks my heart. I worked at that DQ for 6 years...my first job. It's a crucial piece of my life that is forever gone now. I've lived in this town all my life, childhood memories of certain places are now gone, destroyed by this disasterous event. God bless every one of us, as we continue to forge on, and make this town better than it was before.
I live in cedar rapids and have my whole life and its just devistation to see where i have grown up my whole life to be destroyed like that. I think that its amaizing how fast the water rose on night we go to bed and the water is 2 blocks away 5am the next moring we wake up and its at the end of our street 7am the same day we get ready to leave and its at the end of the alley next to our house so i just want to thank you for making this video to show people how bad it accually was.
This is a really touching video. It is still hard to believe that water was that high and got all the way to Mercy Hospital. There is one picture at 4:35 that is not of Cedar Rapids. It's actually Parkview Church in Iowa City and the neighborhood west of the church, but the flooding there was terrible, too.
I can't believe it's been nearly a year since the flood. It feels more like only a couple of months. I took over a hundred pictures of many areas of Cedar Rapids(I live on the NE side) and a couple videos too. It never occured to me to upload them to Youtube. Thankfully we were able to get a lot of stores back in business.
I would like to thank Hawkfan for making this video so that I could see what I missed during the flood as I was a patient in Mercy Hospital and had under went surgery the day of the flood. I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone that helped with the sand bagging to try and stop the hospital from flooding to much before they could evacuate all of us. Also I want to say THANK YOU to the amblance personel for taking me and the others to safety. THANK YOU !
like them big city ppl.....But when the water came....we remember who we were...we rolled up our sleeves and did what what we know was right....We came together as a community to help people weve never met before, and may never see again. And we didnt ask for anything is return...I saw a lady on 16th ave stranded where she went off the road in icy conditions. 6 cars were helping her...It wasnt this way before the flood. As far as im concerened we already have a better cedar rapids.
Scortching heat, blustering cold...blizzards...6 feet of snow...Tornadoes, torrential rain and flooding...all of it....Unlike the victims of katrina we helped one another unstead of letting our greed get the best of us...and because of it there was no deaths directly related to the flood.... We will build a greater cedar rapids, a better cedar rapids. For awhile crime starting going up...people would no longer help change a tire...or stop at an accident to see if anyone was ok..we were getting
true about katrina...but there were not dead bodies lined up along freeways that ppl are stranded on...There isnt kids sleeping 10 feet from dead bodies...And there wasnt any looting and rioting...or ppl killing eachother for a gallon of water or a bag of chips....The damage here i believe was greater than katrina...But the people here came together like small states do..
People here cared more about helping thier neighbor that mobbing and killing. Iowa has seen it all...
I helped sandbags.. but the sandbags down town didnt do anything... btw is the bridge still down? ever since bills bros got flooded havnt been to that part of town. i still dont see why the police carried automatic rifles.
i was pissed... i got hit and came really close to losing my house i did have to spend my summer in a fucking camper but as long as me and my family are okay.. im alright. and happy.
I am so proud of how the people inside the state of Iowa and outside of Iowa helped out the people who are recovering from this great flood. I live only a few minutes away from Cedar Rapids and the damage was shocking. I was not affected by it but I know several people who was. Thank you for everyone for coming together during this time and help rebuild the city. Please don't forget about the city in the future because the people of Cedar Rapids still do need your help.
They say that what happend to cedar rapids was worse thain Katrina. because in a flood it sits ( The water 4 ever) but in a hurricane it comes and goes like carma kamillian. It just wasnt as famous because were in a small state and noone really gives a crap so yes.
awesome video. I live in south la. and nothing experienced here (meaning Katrina) compares to this.
my heart goes out to all those devastated by this, and my prayers are with them.
but they are a strong people, though it seems, and will rebound with strength, or whining as I have often heard, and still continue to hear, from some here in the south.
I wish you well, and good luck,
Thanx so much for the video..it really plucked the strings of my heart.
Hawkfan428, all I can say is Thank You. I've told friends all of the country about this video. I live about 4 or 5 blocks from the Czech Museum. I admit I cry every time I see this video.
I went on a mission trip this year to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and it hurt to see that people lost everything they ever had pictures and all. God called us there to help with clean up.
I was born & raised in CR and currently live in Denver, CO. This is a tragedy beyond explanation, and I appreciated your video to keep things in perspective from so far away. Once the "hype" is gone from the national media coverage we are left wondering what's happening back home. We would've done anything to get back there to help, in lieu of that we've donated money. You're all in our thoughts & prayers. Keep fighting the good fight!!
We are from Cedar Rapids and my parents had there home flooded to the second floor of their home. My mom loves this video and especially the music. Can you tell me who this is and the name of the song? Thank you and I hope all is well with you.
I have a friend there, too. He sent me this link. The music to this is amazing and the before and after DQ photos and RR Bridge brought it to light. Having survived 24" of rain in 20 hours in SA TX, I know what damage this can bring. Bless you all! God speed!
why is it that whenever the flood waters hit the midwest, the government and others keep saying that they shouldn't be allowed to rebuild there cause of the floods? if that's the case, then they shouldn't be allowed to build in florida cause of the hurricanes and shouldn't be allowed to build in california cause of the earthquakes, or shouldn't be able to build near a mountain cause it might blow up. we all have some problems to overcome somewhere in this country, but we love this country, period
I've got tears in my eyes.. my heart goes out to you wonderful people in Iowa. I know you are all so strong and will prevail through this historical devastation. Your spirit is inspiring. My love, prayers, thoughts and money are headed your way. By the way.. the song was a perfect soundtrack to the video.
This was a very hard video to watch but done so well, and the muic was breath taking. We have four children there who have lost so much, but are standing so tall, thank you!
What a wonderful vidoe you put together. I sit in tears knowing how many of my friends and family are hurt by all this. But we are midwesterners and we will get through this!
The World will notice how the Midwest takes care of business the right way the first time!!! Cedar Rapids will mend with the help of the good people and thank GOD, no drownings, looters and con-men. These "Iowejuns Are No Fools".
shame on you for politicizing this!! It has nothing to do with republicans or democrats it was a natural disaster. To the credit of most Iowans they will rebuild and not place blame on people who have nothing to do with it!!
It will be very hard to rebuild anything without the help and money of outsiders, especially the 2.5 billion dollars approved by the Congress and Senate last week for Iowa. Hope they use some of that money to fix the lousy roads in Cedar Rapids.
Where were the levees? How can so many fail? Rep and Dem too busy making sure corporations make billions. Ins co will pay little but folks will re-elect the same professioanl politicans expecting different results.
The river crested way above the levees, they did not fail. This was a record flood, way above the last large flood of 1929. The large building is the Quaker oats plant which employ hundreds, plus the UP Railroad bridge that services this complex is now gone also. At least the midwestern people tried to stop it and there was no looting and the Media will not keep harping about it and I doubt that Spike Lee accuses Bush of blowing up the levees like in New Orleans. The devastation is the same.
OK the water crested the levees. How many were required to carry flood ins? Folk here took care of themselves they DIDN'T wait for the gov to come pick them up. Gov has an adjenda to move people into "downtowns" and take away private property. These floods will be used to further that adjenda. Ins co will pay little but folks will re-elect same old, same old Rep and Dem. I expect the cresting OVER the levees was result of the levees up river..
I agree with you that the govt. wants people to move into downtowns and take away private property. And you are absolutely correct, folks here did take care of themselves. The new adjenda for the govt. is now to declare this a 100 flood plain and not allow the businesses to rebuild. I say, just get the govt. out of it and these midwesterners will do what they have always done, take care of things themselves. The govt. now is using this for an excuse to tell businesses what they cannot do.
Amen. We agree. NO more Rep or Dems. Write in someone else - can't get worse. I wish all those that lost so much the best of luck and I do hope they make some real constitutional based changes.
The Congress and Senate appropriated 2.5 billion dollars for the Iowa catastrophe. They may be entitled to an opinion here. What's to stop this from happening again? Absolutely nothing. If I owned a substantial corporation I would think about moving away from the flood zone. Some insurance companies will not insure twice in the same place, forcing hard decisions in the process, since everything is based on the almighty dollar.
Wow, nice job making this video. I lived in CR for five years, and my heart breaks when I see pictures of all the destruction. I know that faith with restore this city to its greatness.
I made it through this flood unscathed on the SW side but yet I feel complete devastation inside knowing my hometown has been destroyed. Not to mention for all of those who have lost so much.
I was one of those "gawkers" that just had to see it for myself for it too all sink in. A very sad moment in our city's history for sure.
This is something I will never forget as it brought a grown man to tears. Let us all pull together and clean up our city.
I used to live on the SW side, my parents still do. I hear ya though, horrible thing to see. I'm thinking about coming home for a few days to help out with something. Im going nuts sitting here 1000 miles away and not being able to help.
this video makes me super depressed cuz of waht happened 3 years ago i was almost affected seeing althese place that i reconize
