  • aw, this was when Paul had lost a part of his tooth when they were attacked (or something like that...) Poor thing :((

  • me encantó!!!!!

  • the bass drum is so epic at the beginning

  • In the cartoon, Paul looks Japanese...

  • Love this

  • Is that the vibrato or tremolo of a VOX amp that's making the warbling sound on the up-struck notes? OR perhaps a Fender tremolo?

  • @GHR1227 wtf are you on about?

  • Great video secuence and take session.

  • who farted at 0:52?

  • George is playing a Gibson SG on this....it's such a great, hard, heavy sound. I wanna say it might be the first "metal" sounding song? Drums and bass are also heavy as heck.

  • @Strumrr --I don't know about the 1st metal song but damn close. What about "You really got me"? That was in 1964 I believe. This song is in 1966.

  • Man, when the shit kicks in at 0:16 with those overdriven Vox tremelo guitars, Ringo's narly drums and the tambourine, that's all she wrote - brilliant '60s acid-tinged pop. I've been listening to the Beatles for years and years, and they never cease to astound me.

  • John and George were playing Epiphone Casino guitars by this time. Once Lennon picked it up, he seldom played any other guitar. That would account for all of the photos of him holding his; first with the sunburst paint job and then with paint removed. Not sure how many of these he owned, but I would put my money on that it was the same original Casino.

  • Harrison on his Gibson SG.......MAGIC!!!

  • hèy_ï_féÈl_sö_lôÑëlÿ_tÔdãy

  • Notice in the video of Paul with the colored glasses, he has a broken front tooth? He had been in a car accident.

    Beatles Forever!!

  • I could listen to their outtakes their mess ups their funning around forever

    pure magic

    thanks

  • Without the tape delayed "writer.er.er.er.er.er.er". That part always gives me goosebumps. Just another fantastic Beatles song.....another feather in their cap...

  • This is a great song when it first came out, and, much like "The Kinks" reference, The Beatles kicked ass back then, and still do. I'm working on a cruise ship and we did a "Beatles Tribute. One question was asked when The Beatles broke up? A great answer came from behind me, stating "N E V E R !!! Thanks God for the music of the 60's and the 70's. That WAS music. Greg, of "Ameritalian".

  • Adore this song - thanks for uploading it!

  • Is it me or is that one of the first heavy metal riffs ever?

  • @teambronski "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks was out before this and that's often seen as the first "proto-metal" type song. The Beatles were probably influenced by it (they were really good at taking new ideas and mastering them themselves).

  • @theredraven Ah yes, the Kinks! Good call. Personally I did not get into the Kinks until way later so for me at least, this was a precursor to the Iron Maiden I spent my teenage years listening to.

  • i wish beatles songs went on for 10 minutes each

  • @dessiesdoneit how bout you hear a 15:00 song? if you want to hear the beatle's longest song, type in #Revoloution9

  • Check the tremolo effect on the rhythm guitar. It must be the transistorized VOX 460 series amp that was used by the Beatles during the "Revolver" period. Any modern guitarist would frown upon such a piece of junk equipment - but what beefy sounds did the Fab Four get out of it!!!!

  • esta musica esta sempre atual!! faz parte de minhas favoritas. thank you to post this video!

  • bass is epic

  • I love the comics! Ringo is so cool!

  • Sweet when I saw Paul over the summer he's touring with the guitar played on the album!!

  • Their loudest song. Only the Fab Four can take a song about politics [ho-hum] and make it ROCK.

  • @WhyDoYouAskWhoIam it's not about politics it's about John's writing and his paperback books.

  • @WhyDoYouAskWhoIam Paul wrote this tune when he was helping out at a London book store, apparently he spent weeks cataloging obscure books

  • @WhyDoYouAskWhoIam I think 'Helter Skelter" may edge this one out for loudest, but I like this one better.

  • This is unharmed studio recording... No one can preform this well without that studio distortion

  • awesome video

  • Nice video mix of cartoon and live shots!!!

  • Paul on guitar.

  • sorry, but fake and shit all over. made by a so called human who does not know at all anything abt the beatles. no more plse and f.o. with this scrap

  • @dega0112 Shall we assume you're the one who doesn't know anything about The Beatles? These are studio takes, and very well known!

  • @gkmotorsport

    lolol!

  • 0:52 - 0:57 funny voices...

  • beatles best song i reckon. or one of them. or as good as the rest. who can say. not me thats for sure. good night and much love.

  • I was born exactly 23 years later ;)

  • Paul used a Rickenbacker bass in this song and many others, too.

  • lol, my sister heard this on the way to the library.

  • Love this

  • Your videos are stunning.I love the end scene with the Budokan footage running below.Outstanding again.A fantastic upload.

  • is jumping jack flash a paperback writer.tribute?

  • Only two takes we're recorded, Take two is the master one, but they added echo and reverb effects on the voices when they reach to ''Paperback Writeeeeer!'', because some line bass and drums we're deleted or covered with the echoed/reverbed songs.

And also here doesn't end on fade-out.

I like more the way that was mixed here than Past Masters.

  • I agree Mac's bass work on Paperback Writer is awesome and was way ahead of its time..sadly in 66 people didnt key in on it like they did later so people didnt get what a genius on the bass he was until years later..in fact many people didnt think the Beatles played nearly as well as Hendrix Cream Zep etc. Looking back McCartneys bass work is the very best of all IMHO

  • @rds1958 The Beatles' enormous impact on popular music/culture in general combined with the fact that his songwriting gets all of the praise and acclaim (and rightfully so) are the reasons why his proficiency as a rock bassist consistently get overlooked. I've listened to a lot of Beatles records and if there's one thing that keeps surprising me, it's the sophistication, creativity, and playfulness of Paul's bass playing. I often will try and focus on his bass work and end up saying, "Wow!"

  • @evolutionarytic In 66 rock musicians werent thought of a virtuosos..wasnt until late 60s that rock became serious art in the eyes of the listeners..Beatles were of course way ahead of their time and had been doing awesome work (since Rubber Soul) for 3 years already..their Revolver period with these distorted chimey Epiphones sounds so unique..same tones on She Said She said

  • @rds1958 i agree, Paul said in Guitar Player that was him on lead guitar. George was playing rhythm

  • @shakedownstreet48

no, paperback writer has the normal beatles personel.

  • Man, this is the birth of hard rock.

  • jimmi savile said to paul why do you always sing love songs why dont you write a song about somthing differnt so he wrote paperback writer

  • This sounds like a great mono mix. The stereo mix of this on "Past Masters" sounds like shit with the extreme separation, like Revolution on the same disc and that mono mix kicks ass too. The Beatles themselves with George Martin mixed their albums in mono first up until the White Album.

  • First non-love single ???? Fool on the hill...?

  • did anyone notice that paul has a cracked tooth inthis video

  • GENIUS!

  • my favourite guitar riff of all time

  • @fuzzmeister13 fucking great aint it?

  • The "frere jacques" harmony, Brother John...was this Macca's gentle swipe at bandmate (and published author) Johnny L?

  • the beatles.genios adelantados a su epoca!..grandes todos!! me encanta el bajo de paul!.....genial!!! THE BEATLES FOREVER!!!

  • imagine hearing this for the first time in 1966.... very heavy guitar sound, and song for what was around in that time.. way way ahead of everybody else...

  • @paul54321 I bought this single June 66 Rain was B side

It did sound very cool they toured in Aug of 66 and I saw them in DC

  • @rds1958 you are very very lucky to have seen them live....

  • @paul54321

the guitar riff is incredible, but the bass sound on this album changed music. they actually had to get recording standards in Britain changed so that the bass could be so prominent.

heavy bass lines being the hallmark of modern rock'n'roll, thank this session for making heavy music of all kinds possible.

it was done by recording the bass through a bass amplifier into another bass amplifier as a microphone.

those silly longhairs and their amplifier microphones. thanks pot!!

  • @songcycle that's fuckin' rad!!!!

  • @songcycle I read somewhere, that the engineers at EMI, were given a so to speak,... slap on the hand for placing the mics to close to the drum kit.... then later...oh its a Beatle track... ok ... we will let it go this time...lol..

  • this is phenomenal how did you get ahold of this?

  • Why does ringo's cartoon kick so much ass? :)

  • RINGO ROX U SUCK NON RINGO LIKER

  • Nada mejor para un fanático que un back stage; la grabación de la grabación de Paperback Writer

  • Your welcome! :)

  • @MaccaMaker HE/SHE said "There's nothing better for a fan than a backstage recording and the recording of Paperback Writer!"

    ********HABLO ESPANOL********

  • disgrl4 Do you mean the Monkee's TV show which was filmed? I didn't know the Jackson 5 had a cartoon show.

  • You really know you've "made it" when they do a cartoon or action figure of you. And...I think that besides Humphry Bogart in an old Bugs Bunny and Ann Margaret in the Flintstones...the Beatles were first to be a cartoon band. Were the Monkee's a cartoon as well?

  • @2441822831 No. The Monkees did have a show but it was done live and not in animation. The Jackson 5, however, did have a cartoon show of themselves.

  • I used to watch The Beatles Cartoon. Ringo would unplug his drums and they'd deflate.

  • Look! John's playing a Stratocaster @ :34

  • One of the best Beatles best power pop gems!!

  • All of their songs make me want to dance, laugh, or cry. ^-^ Beatles=Ringo, Paul, John, George=LEGENDS.

  • That's a Gibson SG and a Vox Super Beatle.( I believe )..

  • You are correct. Thats the sound on most of the Revolver album.

  • Comment removed

  • This song wasn't published on a LP, but as A-side of a single (Paperback Writer / Rain)

  • Those guitars really kicks ass.

  • @Nacho66 hell yeah - it's all about the gibsons and the gretschs and the fenders. none of this new stuff. you gotta stick with the classics.

  • Nice editing work!

  • That's what I think the moment they started the song.

  • WOw I wish theyd pressed this version....even their releases were toned down..thats how far ahead of their time they were.

  • at 2:00 the background vocal: MAR-I-JUA-NA - so slick, but you had to be back then.

  • Lol! Omg, you are so right lol.

  • LOL! Yeah, while that might be true, they are actually singing "Frère Jacques", as in the old French lullabye, "Are You Sleeping, brother John?"

  • Frère Jacques and Marijuana both happen to be 4 syllable words that sound alike. They both seem to fit - thanks for the input. I reckon it is up to the listener to determine exactly what is being said in the background starting at 2:00

  • Uh, no. It's not up to the listener - it's fact. Get the remastered Beatles "Past Masters" CD set, turn the ballance on your stereo to isolate the right channel and listen. Plus, it's common knowledge if you read up on how they wrot the song.

  • Well...I guess you schooled my ass. After consulting with wiki (they are never wrong), you appear to be correct. I'll isolate the right channel sometime and check it out. I thought I was on to something, given how they were changing at the time and the influence of Dylan. Thanks for the info.

  • I didn't mean to sound like I was being a jerk, no disrespect intended..... this is one of my all time favorite songs since I was young and I just sort of assumed everyone knew what John and George sing in the second verse. You are correct though, they were heavily influenced by Dylan.

  • Sorry but You have over active imagination.

  • Thanks for this.

This is my favourite Beatles single with its b-side "Rain".

This preceded Revolver which is my favourite Beatles album.

    Nice one!

  • Love this song and ever one of there others

  • paper writeeeeeeeeeeeeer

    I like Paul's glasses

  • Rain is the B side to this single, should have been a double A side

  • fucking great songgg, i wish the beatles were still aliveeeee i coudlnt live without there music

  • Paul still looks Cute chipped tooth an all Lol Lol!!

  • alguien puede desirme que paso con el diente de Paul ???? buen bajeo!!!

  • se lo rompio en un accidente en motocicleta!!!

    :)

  • i wanted to be a jet airliner pilot= sheetz=I waana be a PAPER BACK writer!!!lookin 4 a bomb? this is IT!! oh good is good? THE BEATLES!!!!

  • 45 year old song and it still knocks the crap out of today's rock...

  • @iamtoothewalrus 44 to be exact but i agree

  • @iamtoothewalrus yes agree. they are the best. i've doubt if our current pops can match that crap even after 20yrs.

  • @iamtoothewalrus Oh yes. Nothing comes close.

  • i always thought the guitar solos in this song sounded kind of 80's style. Love it. "I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer" - I fear this will be the story of my life lol

  • solos? there aren't any solos in this song.

  • si ça vient de macca alors bon départ ça pète bien, dommage que ces versions alternatives ne soient pas mieux diffusées. enfin là c'est fait merci qui que vous soyez !

  • This was my very FAVOURITE Beatles song for a long time.

  • wonderful..awesome..

  • great song

  • Great job on this video!!!! Sounds AWESOME!!!!

  • GREAT sound and video here boy! Good Job!!!!

  • I have all this crap on CD, no joke. 3 cds :)

  • crap?

  • Haha prolly a bad chosing of words

  • Which CD is this?

  • Its a bootleg, thats what mine is.

  • it was their single for revolver.

  • Oh yes, I know all that but I wondered where the actual RECORDING came from, not the complete song.

  • It wasnt on Revolver, but it should've been--one of their greatest singles. Similarly, Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever never made it onto Sgt. Pepper (a fact that George Martin always regretted)

  • It was released as a single, but can be found on one of the "past Masters" CD's.

  • I really wish Apple would release all of these outtake for once and for all. They are amazing to listen to.

  • Great sound. Visuals suck tho'.

Why would you want to pollute the thing by reminding everybody about that ridiculously bad cartoon?

  • you're a swine.

  • in the early 80's, Ringo had a weekly syndicated radio program. he said he found his way around the drum-tech's set up, thus the unique drumming there

  • Does someone fart at 00:52?

  • It sounds more like a tape rewinding

  • Could be. At least, I hope so ...

  • Looks like Paulie's got a chiped tooth there... Better see a dentist...!

  • That's from his moped crash in '66. That's where all those people were getting the "Paul Is Dead" crap from. You can also see a scar on the left side of his lip. That's where his teeth went through his lip and chipped his tooth. Hence the chipped tooth.

  • Ringo was actually set up on this session with left-handed drums, the session included Rain. Note his different sound from the normal right-handed set-up he used.

  • hard to believe that. how do you know thats true?

  • Believe it, story is true

  • how long would it take to rearrange the drum kit?

  • Ringo is actually left-handed.

  • Best song, best riff, best bass line ever. You could take the vocals off and I could listen to this song over and over again.

  • i love this song especially the ringo's drums

  • wow the first take was AWSOME

  • LOL! Macca and his chipped tooth in the video! Wasn't it a scooter accident or something he was in that caused the tooth?

  • This is interesting.

  • pinche versioOn esta biien padre ii mas koOmoO la canta mi noOvioO guapoO qkee chiida versioOn mas chiida qkee la versioOn oOriginal jeje,,,,

    paul tQm

  • Killer guitars and vocals.

  • ...look on these guitars at 0:50...they are awsome...they are legends...

  • paul isn't dead trust me

  • paul's not dead.

  • yes, i think we've gathered that by this point.

  • thanks for this! Always great to hear more outtakes/early versions of Beatles hits.

  • cool! thanks

  • oh interesting i will look it up.

  • Paul died in 65 HAHAHAHAH WOT A FUCKING IDIOT obviously you have no idead about paul mccartney or the beatles. Are you on some different planet????

  • IT WAS A JOKE. As for knowing your "Beatle History" get a clue. There was a "Paul is Dead" rumour in the late 60s and these videos where Paul's teeth were chipped from a moped accident were actually used by these idiots that concocted the rumour. Look it up. There's a ton of stuff on it.

  • Comment removed

  • how did they fix pauls teeth?

  • Okay, everyone knows this isn't Paul. Look at his teeth closely. This is William Cambpell. He was the guy that took Paul's place after Paul died in late 65. Wow. This is real proof!

    ;)

  • the messed up teeth really show in the Rain video too. its Paul alright, he wiped out on a motorbike and scewed up his face. His bangs in the Paperback Writer music vid were combed to each side to hide a gash.

  • Hahaha, people are still on about the Paul is Dead stuff? That's really funny.

  • man paul isnt dead okay? he had an accident thats fact u damn fool

u dont even know anything about the beatles if you would you wouldnt tell other people this shit

    fool...
