Ok sir you look at some light rays and say "they want the gamer to know how kick as their dynamic lighting system is" HAHHAHAHA those light rays are pre rendered, killezone 2 doesn't even volumetric lighting, get your facts right. Killzone looks graphically better but there is reasons for that, Gears 2 also deals with water physics, destructible environments and in general is on a much larger scale then Killzone 2. BTW this is coming from a big fan of both games.
KZ effects are rendered at 640 x 360..not exactly " raising " the bar..O_o..Interesting how they didn't show any of the Gears melee or what it takes to deliver that kind of devastation. Watch the Epic Vidoc about the enemies/AI in Gears 2 to understand where Epic concentrated their resources..some the best animations and hierarchy of villains in gaming. Crazy, over the top weapons like the lancer & torque bow, best cover system.Gears had 2 games ( '06-'08 ) before KZ had 1 in '09. Gears wins :)
@bigben..my eyes are fine..all the KZ special effects ( LIKE I SAID ) like smoke, fire..etc..are rendered at 640 x 360. Do a little research & if you are lucky, you will find the information. You must of noticed how last gen some of those effects look. Resistance 3 runs at 540p BECAUSE of all the effects and atmosphere they are trying to pull off. Alan wake ran at 540p as well to do much the same..it's a technique used to muddy up the look of the game..sometimes it works, sometimes NOT. :)

@InsideOUT37 I don't want to compare kz2 effects to gears 2 becuase I haven't played gears 2 , but compared to kz3 effects in kz2 were better even with lower resolution. Best effects I have seen on console. It's really nice to see volumetric smoke effects, where wind carries smoke and sparkles around. Kz2 really had all those little details that made game great. Bullet physics, ragdoll physics on living enemies, volumetric effects, lightning. Great looking game overall.
@lazyluke712..the only reason I bought a PS3 was because of KZ. The big problem was they sacrificed too much to run all the atmospheric effects. The dark, murky environments that allow many of these effects to pop, wears your eyes down in a relatively short time..it looks all the same after a while. The controls are broken IMO as well and Sev being accused of being a midget is true..lol..still a good game. KZ3 had the best controls and I think the next game will break through.
@InsideOUT37 hm different taste for games I guess. I've always loved games with muddy and dark atmosphere. True about controls, but I still like them, weird I know xD. Anyway particle effects are great in kz2 and yes resolution is lower, but still it's rare to see console game with volumetric effects so that they've had to aim for lower res. For me without doubt among best looking ps3 titles.
@luke..I think KZ did thinks that completely elevated gaming this gen..ON ALL PLATFORMS..including PC.The depth of field effect they use was incredible adding something that I had only really seen on PC with the equally awesome Crysis.Guerrilla has some of the best engineers in the world..no doubt.Gears 3 uses something similar that along with the motion blurr looks fantastic in motion. Crysis 2 on console looked amazing, better than I thought it could.Still haven't played Res 3..can't wait. :)

@lazyluke712 I agree, Killzone 2 was a excellent game but the turbine smoke effect was pre rendered and applied to geometry that was manipulated by an animation, its not a real time particle render. No games currently achieve that level of particle effects its to demanding on PC's and especially consoles.
@element271 I'm not sure about smoke effect caused by turbines, because I can see it's effect on few levels. So probably it is pre rendered. But smoke from gun impact, explosions, destroyed marvel , rockets. Everything has nice volumetric effect , affected by wind. Only console game that I have seen with such effects.
@lazyluke712 I agree, the rest of the stuff looks excellent, Far Cry 2 is another game with volumetric smoke effects that are controlled by dynamic weather, only it did it a year earlier! With volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion, vertex pixel shading and Dx10 all in an open world setting!

@ShawShank503 You do realize that gears 2 only had a slight graphical upgrade over gears 1, which came out in 2006. Which was the best looking console game until Gears 2, then a year later killzone 2 came out which is a very strong competitor. The unreal engine was the most advanced engine on console for years, it was very ahead of its time, what else is there to compare from 2006? Hell gears and killzone are almost on par with graphics only gears did it 3 years earlier.

@ShawShank503 the last of use uses baked on vertex pixel shaded shadows, with a high lighting bit rate achieved through such a small scale level with some volumetric lighting to increase visual quality, the character models look good due to having a shit load of geometry pumped into them, this has a impact on how meany players can be on the screen at once and is why in uncharted multilayer the 3d models have higher texture compression. Have you every played Halo 3? one of the levels in that game have two gigantic scarab ships fighting about 30 AI in the air and 50 AI on the ground, what other game achieves that scale? @ShawShank503 Uncharted 2 does not even have, radiosity, refraction, diffraction or translucency on vegetation, in fact the vegetation has no physics and on the train level on UC2 the vegetation in the background is pre rendered. A stronger point you could have brought up is God of War although in this the camera is controlled by the scripting and as such only 1/3 of the area needs to be rendered, effectively allowing for twice the detail within the level.
its really impresive how a ps3 can handle those kinds of effects. both games are awesome. but i have to say killzone2 particles and lightning effects look enhances the gameplay experience

PS3 people don't need to find stupid excuses like bulkiness and fashion to say KZ is better.. Yes it has greater graphics but the game itself is inferior to gears of war.. @icetrails dude, The blur isn't a mistake. They put that blur there for a more realistic affect. If you where looking at something, then you would look at the stuff in front of you. The rest of the image would be blured out because those parts are out of focus. And if thats not the case, the it is the video. I have killzone 2 and it is really clear. If it was the parts out of focus, and you want the whole screen to be crisp clear, play kz3. They got rid of that.
This would be a Focus-Blur like in Uncharted 2. If you look at some point your view will be clear and around that everything will be blurry. But in the case of Gears of War 2 the blur effect is used as a eye candy and only in the backround. Because in comparison the blurry background the front will look more clearier then it actually is. If you look a bit closer in GeoW2 you will see a lot of low detailed textures. With blur effects it is not that "clear" while gaming.

@fernandobo009 What? Killzone 3 had plenty of colorful environments and the darker environments of killzone 3 had some great art direction. But it definitely has some of the best graphics...volumetric smoke, advanced lighting systems, high poly gun models, tons of detail. You may not like the mood of the environments but the color pallet is a design choice, it has nothing to do with graphics. The visuals for kz2/3 far surpass gears 2 and 3 which also had a desaturated color pallet
@WeEatBrainz Gears of War 3 had about the same amount of color as Killzone 3. You're right though, Killzone 3 definitely has better graphics, but had it been on the 360 the graphics would probably be the same. Killzone has probably the best graphics on consoles, but Gears of War 3 is definitely up there.
Even though Gears of war 2 had that Bullcrap, "HOST ADVANTAGE" It still one of my favorite Games on the xbox for sure, you'll have loads of fun playing with your buddies and working like a squad, The power weapons are amazing. But I wish I had a PS3 so I can play Killzone 2, because to me, I think Killzone is the best PS3 Game out there , and the graphics looks well done.

Honestly I hate graphics whores (like the video creator) because they base that the game is better due to graphics and forget all about gameplay. Yes, I do like better looking graphics but I am more than happy to sacrifice amazing graphics for better gameplay.
@theangusbugg I prefer Killzone 2 for Its gameplay and multiplayer, not only because of graphics. I've had a lot more fun playing KZ2 online with 32 player then GoW2 with 10 players.

@VillNessPSN I have played Killzone 1,2 and 3 and Gears of War 1 and 2. The graphics in the Killzone -series is sometimes a bit more complex then in Gears of Wars but Gears of War is in my opinion better when it comes to story and the controls. I have a PS3 and own Killzone 2, but my former room-mates in College had a Xbox 360 and we played Gears of War a lot. I love the Gears of War - series. The Killzone-series is better then the Halo-series, though, but still the Killzone-controls sucks.
@ZimmermanHound I am not a big fan of shooters so I haven't played neither of them. So I cannot say anything about gameplay, only that what I've seen in videos I prefer KillZone 'cos, like I said, the GoW characters look too big... They just annoy me... The reason might be that I don't like manly things in anything (buff men look grose, don't like taste of beer, not a big fan of heavy metal/rock etc.)
@VillNessPSN Yeah, I agree with you. I also find the characters too bulky, which look not so realistic. Another thing that is annoying is that the both Locust and the pro-antagonists run around without long sleeves, even in the winter. In Killzone clothing change depending on environment. I like masculine stuff - but in a game is has to be realistic and Gears of War is not realistic. Sometimes it becomes to much. Im a fan of strategic games so Im not either a big shooter-fan.

2 things: 1) Alan Wake (an Xbox exclusive) undoubtedly has the best lighting in any game 2) You are comparing 2 different games. Gears is third person and has different aims to KZ and KZ is and FPS with, again, different aims. I think that Killzone series relies too much on the visuals to sell the games. The story and gameplay of Killzone 2 were not that great. Killzone 3 story had a little better story but gameplay was still not my favorite. Must have been the convex joysticks with little traction. Gear is not my favorite game but I think the gameplay is more fun than Killzone. plus Gears has co-op.

And once you kill 30 enemies with explosives then you get an achievement, actually mocking the fact at how conveniently they are layed out. Ok sir you look at some light rays and say "they want the gamer to know how kick as their dynamic lighting system is" HAHHAHAHA those light rays are pre rendered, killezone 2 doesn't even volumetric lighting, get your facts right. Killzone looks graphically better but there is reasons for that, Gears 2 also deals with water physics, destructible environments and in general is on a much larger scale then Killzone 2. KZ effects are rendered at 640 x 360..not exactly " raising " the bar..O_o..Interesting how they didn't show any of the Gears melee or what it takes to deliver that kind of devastation. Watch the Epic Vidoc about the enemies/AI in Gears 2 to understand where Epic concentrated their resources..some the best animations and hierarchy of villains in gaming. Crazy, over the top weapons like the lancer & torque bow, best cover system.Gears had 2 games ( '06-'08 ) before KZ had 1 in '09. Gears wins :)

@bigben..my eyes are fine..all the KZ special effects ( LIKE I SAID ) like smoke, fire..etc..are rendered at 640 x 360. Do a little research & if you are lucky, you will find the information. You must of noticed how last gen some of those effects look. Resistance 3 runs at 540p BECAUSE of all the effects and atmosphere they are trying to pull off. Alan wake ran at 540p as well to do much the same..it's a technique used to muddy up the look of the game..sometimes it works, sometimes NOT. :)

@InsideOUT37 I don't want to compare kz2 effects to gears 2 becuase I haven't played gears 2 , but compared to kz3 effects in kz2 were better even with lower resolution. Best effects I have seen on console. It's really nice to see volumetric smoke effects, where wind carries smoke and sparkles around. Kz2 really had all those little details that made game great. Bullet physics, ragdoll physics on living enemies, volumetric effects, lightning. Great looking game overall.

@lazyluke712..the only reason I bought a PS3 was because of KZ. The big problem was they sacrificed too much to run all the atmospheric effects. The dark, murky environments that allow many of these effects to pop, wears your eyes down in a relatively short time..it looks all the same after a while. The controls are broken IMO as well and Sev being accused of being a midget is true..lol..still a good game. KZ3 had the best controls and I think the next game will break through.

Anyway particle effects are great in kz2 and yes resolution is lower, but still it's rare to see console game with volumetric effects so that they've had to aim for lower res. For me without doubt among best looking ps3 titles.

@luke..I think KZ did thinks that completely elevated gaming this gen..ON ALL PLATFORMS..including PC.The depth of field effect they use was incredible adding something that I had only really seen on PC with the equally awesome Crysis.Guerrilla has some of the best engineers in the world..no doubt.Gears 3 uses something similar that along with the motion blurr looks fantastic in motion. Crysis 2 on console looked amazing, better than I thought it could.Still haven't played Res 3..can't wait. :)

@lazyluke712 I agree, Killzone 2 was a excellent game but the turbine smoke effect was pre rendered and applied to geometry that was manipulated by an animation, its not a real time particle render. No games currently achieve that level of particle effects its to demanding on PC's and especially consoles.

But smoke from gun impact, explosions, destroyed marvel , rockets. Everything has nice volumetric effect , affected by wind. Only console game that I have seen with such effects.

Which was the best looking console game until Gears 2, then a year later killzone 2 came out which is a very strong competitor. The unreal engine was the most advanced engine on console for years, it was very ahead of its time, what else is there to compare from 2006? Hell gears and killzone are almost on par with graphics only gears did it 3 years earlier.

@ShawShank503 the last of use uses baked on vertex pixel shaded shadows, with a high lighting bit rate achieved through such a small scale level with some volumetric lighting to increase visual quality, the character models look good due to having a shit load of geometry pumped into them, this has a impact on how meany players can be on the screen at once and is why in uncharted multilayer the 3d models have higher texture compression. Have you every played Halo 3? one of the levels in that game have two gigantic scarab ships fighting about 30 AI in the air and 50 AI on the ground, what other game achieves that scale? I would also like to add that with Gears 3 the license with Microsoft was up, Epic intended to port the game to the PS3 but could not due to RAM restraints.

@ShawShank503 Uncharted 2 does not even have, radiosity, refraction, diffraction or translucency on vegetation, in fact the vegetation has no physics and on the train level on UC2 the vegetation in the background is pre rendered. A stronger point you could have brought up is God of War although in this the camera is controlled by the scripting and as such only 1/3 of the area needs to be rendered, effectively allowing for twice the detail within the level.

Really cant compare, one is first person the other isnt, it brings different gameplay and GoW put more effort into the character animations

PS3 people don't need to find stupid excuses like bulkiness and fashion to say KZ is better.. Yes it has greater graphics but the game itself is inferior to gears of war.. That comes from a person that is a proud owner of both sony's and microsoft's consoles... And lately i do prefer PS3.. But KZ is just an ok game with great graphics and gears is a great game with ok graphics.. Maybe abit better than ok but you get the point.. Im more excited for gears 3 than i was for KZ3

@icetrails dude, The blur isn't a mistake. They put that blur there for a more realistic affect. If you where looking at something, then you would look at the stuff in front of you. The rest of the image would be blured out because those parts are out of focus. And if thats not the case, the it is the video. I have killzone 2 and it is really clear. If it was the parts out of focus, and you want the whole screen to be crisp clear, play kz3. They got rid of that.

This would be a Focus-Blur like in Uncharted 2. If you look at some point your view will be clear and around that everything will be blurry. But in the case of Gears of War 2 the blur effect is used as a eye candy and only in the backround. Because in comparison the blurry background the front will look more clearier then it actually is. If you look a bit closer in GeoW2 you will see a lot of low detailed textures. With blur effects it is not that "clear" while gaming.

@fernandobo009 What? Killzone 3 had plenty of colorful environments and the darker environments of killzone 3 had some great art direction. But it definitely has some of the best graphics...volumetric smoke, advanced lighting systems, high poly gun models, tons of detail. You may not like the mood of the environments but the color pallet is a design choice, it has nothing to do with graphics. The visuals for kz2/3 far surpass gears 2 and 3 which also had a desaturated color pallet

You're right though, Killzone 3 definitely has better graphics, but had it been on the 360 the graphics would probably be the same. Killzone has probably the best graphics on consoles, but Gears of War 3 is definitely up there.

Even though Gears of war 2 had that Bullcrap, "HOST ADVANTAGE" It still one of my favorite Games on the xbox for sure, you'll have loads of fun playing with your buddies and working like a squad, The power weapons are amazing. But I wish I had a PS3 so I can play Killzone 2, because to me, I think Killzone is the best PS3 Game out there , and the graphics looks well done.

@VillNessPSN I have played Killzone 1,2 and 3 and Gears of War 1 and 2. The graphics in the Killzone -series is sometimes a bit more complex then in Gears of Wars but Gears of War is in my opinion better when it comes to story and the controls. I have a PS3 and own Killzone 2, but my former room-mates in College had a Xbox 360 and we played Gears of War a lot. I love the Gears of War - series. The Killzone-series is better then the Halo-series, though, but still the Killzone-controls sucks.

So I cannot say anything about gameplay, only that what I've seen in videos I prefer KillZone 'cos, like I said, the GoW characters look too big... They just annoy me... The reason might be that I don't like manly things in anything (buff men look grose, don't like taste of beer, not a big fan of heavy metal/rock etc.)

@VillNessPSN Yeah, I agree with you. I also find the characters too bulky, which look not so realistic. Another thing that is annoying is that the both Locust and the pro-antagonists run around without long sleeves, even in the winter. In Killzone clothing change depending on environment. I like masculine stuff - but in a game is has to be realistic and Gears of War is not realistic. Sometimes it becomes to much. Im a fan of strategic games so Im not either a big shooter-fan.

2 things: 1) Alan Wake (an Xbox exclusive) undoubtedly has the best lighting in any game 2) You are comparing 2 different games. Gears is third person and has different aims to KZ and KZ is and FPS with, again, different aims. Killzone 2 has really poor textures and model poly-count. That said, i think Geras 2 is waay to bright.
Gears 1 PC looks 10x better then either of these though :)

I think that Killzone series relies too much on the visuals to sell the games. The story and gameplay of Killzone 2 were not that great. Killzone 3 story had a little better story but gameplay was still not my favorite. Must have been the convex joysticks with little traction. Gear is not my favorite game but I think the gameplay is more fun than Killzone. plus Gears has co-op.

Now, as an xbox player, i'd argue that its better. BUT i have my justifications for this, not just some boredom-induced controversy. If you looked at the gears of war 2 clip for the gameplay, you can clearly understand that all in that battle was fair and usual. No unrealism, no stupidity, nothing. But that killzone clip? boy, how conveniently those explosives where put on the bridge, as if the enemy NEEDED you to shoot them. result of staring into those AMAZING lights for too long...

And once you kill 30 enemies with explosives then you get an achievement, actually mocking the fact at how conveniently they are layed out.
