  • USB 1.0! I have never seen one of those! i HAVE seen 1.1, 2.0, but that would be it.

  • I did something like this with a Game Boy Advance SP that had a broken hinge. It works, but it doesn't fold anymore.

  • ill buy it off of you im looking for a windows me computer how much would u sell it for?

  • whats the model for the crt i need for my old pc?

  • Install Puppy on your setup as well it runs faster.

  • Your screen had a blown inverter. I myself have this laptop and the part is 3 dollars. I tested other screens off the inverter to see if they light up nope no go

so ordering a new inverter. Have you got your old screen about still would be good if you needed it. the halftop looks good by the way.

  • Why is it black and white color screen?

  • A true half-top would have an LCD monitor!

  • Dang, that brings back memories. This was my first computer. I loved it to death, I wish I hadn't sold it.

I remember it had a vertical line of green pixels through the screen, after my sister dropped it.

And I believe I even had the Pentium I version.

  • cool

  • but How this can be HalfTOP when there is no more TOP on this ... half ?!? :D :D :D

  • That's some brilliant Mac Gyvering sir. I applaud you.

Now ducttape a 5 1/4th floppy drive to the side and you're really rolling.

  • Haha, I have a Dell laptop that I too call a half-top. I thought I was the only one who calls laptops w/o a screen that.

  • One of m professors wrote the instruction manual fir the PCMIA slot and card

  • @IncredableDrE Really? You think you would have remembered the acronym then... it's PCMCIA

  • how do i use tweak ui....

  • im watching this video on an ibm thinkpad r40 =p

  • Windows ME could basically be called Windows 98 third edition.

Also, I'm typing this on the same sort of thing. I had a mid 2000s laptop that the screen died, so I removed the screen and I just use the base with a monitor :)

  • windows 2000 can be good for this laptop

its the best for older computers

more compatable with programs right now

  • I'm sure you already know this but if you have to put an OS on a computer this age, Windows 98SE is infinitely faster, more stable, and better designed than Windows ME.

  • I really enjoy this video because i have the same thing i'm building i just need to make a boot disk thank you for posting!!!! 1quetion though? where could i get the manual for this?

  • @PrescottValleyMan Try bootdisk . com, and if you need the manual for an IBM, look up "Lenovo Support & Downloads".

  • Ha, I like the name on the monitor... "Miracle"

    "Is your monitor working today?"

    "Why yes, it's a Miracle!" :P

And yes the setup did remind me of the IIc. I had one years ago. Even then it was still rather old and it unfortunately didn't work well. Still the only Apple product I've ever had.

  • cool. little bit like in the 80s (c64, amiga500). I like old stuff.

  • 6:21 is it a 1970's school desk you have?

  • @DoReMiForever Yes, it's a table that came from a school junk sale.

  • Infrared port? Man, there's one of those on my 2003/2004 Pentium 4 PC! :D

  • I have a IBM thinkpad 350! with a Inteli486SL

  • have you taken this to a Coffee Shop for productivity? because this would beat the guy i have seen that lugs around his mac mini and lcd monitor

  • Thanks for the vid mate. I am a huge fan of the "IBM" Thinkpads and this truly looks a beauty!

  • Thanks for the vid mate. I am a huge fan of the "IBM" Thinkpads and this truly looks a beauty!

  • maybe they should sell these for people cramped for space

  • aaaaajajajajajajajaja que buena chatarra ajajajajajaja

  • Why does it say "Windows Millenium 4.?.????" in the bottom

  • @MixerVM Because I have it set to display the Windows version number on the desktop. You can use "Tweak UI" to enable this feature.

  • Try Windows 2000.

  • Where would you find monitors like that small, color or not? I myself have a bunch of "halftops" that have no display, and they are nothing special, and they need displays. 4 or 5 are at least needed.

  • @ceracecar These small monitors were designed to be used with Point Of Sale (POS) terminals, a.k.a. cash registers. You can find them on eBay and other surpus auction sites, although prices may or may not be reasonable, depending on the seller.

  • yeah thats called the track point and its an iconical part of Thinkpads :)

  • one ofmy friends when he was littile his dad gave him a broken ibm laptop with windows 95 on the lcd monitor was busted so he ripped it off and hooked it up to a monitor

  • COOOOL

  • Try running Windows 2K on it

  • just order a new lcd off of ebay!

  • put windows 2000 on it, very more stable then ME and it doesn't need anything more about the pc specs

  • question as I take the bios to install windows 98 because it has the windows 95 thanks beforehand.

  • hello friend a question I have a ibm laptop IBM Think 380D when starting I get the error: 161 and 163 is not such a serious problem for the laptop? thanks beforehand

  • That means your backup battery is dead. This is the small battery (not the main one) which holds the time and date and the computer's configuration information. Unfortunately these backup batteries are hard to find anymore because they are specific IBM parts, not generic batteries.

  • How do you pry a monitor off? I have a 380Z, looks the same as that, and I need to get it off.

  • If you take apart the case you will see the screws holding the hinges on. I believe I also took the bezel around the LCD off first.

  • nice

  • Why is the monitor black in white?

  • Because it is a black and white monitor!

  • Well then, I guess I sorta answered my own question.. right?

  • @vwestlife LOL...

  • i have a half top aswell,

  • hey! i had one but is was not a ibm think pad or was it long time ago.

  • i have an old laptop like this i just collect them to mess around with cause i tried 2 travel with 1 and it heats up so much it burns 2 through jeans!

  • What was that program you were using before you loaded Windows? Was it the bios setup utility? It looks way cooler than mine, my bios setup is just a standard text based one.

  • Yes, that was IBM's fancy graphical setup/diagnostics utility. They don't use it anymore. My Pentium-4 IBM ThinkCentre uses a plain text mode setup.

  • west are you thing of selling some stuff? not all just some

  • thinking* typos! why Typos!!

  • what a classic thing!

  • the best thing that there a hell alot of monitors on internet auction in my country for 1 dollar and they work, and also a lot of laptops for the same prise but some dont have hard disk or the lcd is busted.

  • thats a good idea if i had my laptop lcd screen broken i would do the same thing ^_^

  • Great video! As soon as this video started I thought of the Apple //C.

According to the ThinkWiki website (which is a great place to go to find info on every model of Thinkpad ever made), the 380Z was made in September of 1998.

This laptop apparently has a NeoMagic MagicMedia256AV video card built in - How does it run stuff like the Windows Media Player visualizations and offline video - any choppiness?

  • I haven't really tried playing videos on this one. But my slower ThinkPad 560E (a P166MMX) runs Windows Media Player just fine.

  • I have to specify what I just wrote, because it turns out what's called the Portable PC is literally one of their desktop units built as a suitcase. I had a PC CONVERTIBLE computer.....

  • You oughta try to find an IBM Portable PC. I had one twenty years ago--I think it was one of the first laptops, certainly IBM's first one. Had a printer that latched directly to the laptop frame, and when it was all together, it was very Lonnnnnnnnnnnng.... :-)

  • try to put on it windows 2000

  • Why is it a pentium 2 has a setup screen with graphics and a mouse pointer but a brand new dual core whatever just has 80 column text ... :D progress.

  • AMI actually introduced full graphical "WinBIOS" setup with mouse support in 1994, but computer builders who go into BIOS setup on a frequent basis hated it so much that AMI eventually went back to a plain text mode setup. I also have one Compaq desktop which actually runs the BIOS setup from within Windows 3.1, but it has to run from the hard drive, since it does not have setup in ROM.

  • Now there's a solution to using a working laptop with a useless built-in display. Remove the display and set it up with an external monitor. Why didn't we think of that?

  • I actually have a complete Apple IIc, along with a joystick.

Also have a Thinkpad just like that, with a cracked LCD. I might do something similar to this, and add a good PCMCIA sound card for testing audio stuff on the workbench.
