so I made Cu(OH)2 via electrolysis and decomposed it with heat to CuO ( Cu(OH)2 --> CuO + H2O ) but when I added methanol and lit it it had trouble turning the flame green. only when it burnt down to the black dust it was green. did you leave yours in the solution for a while or did it work right away? My oxide might be impure but not too bad. suggestions?
I have the best science teacher ever! We burned Copper Oxide in class as well as other things like Calcium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, etc. Flamebow!
YES!!!! i got some very nasty food :( with chopped pork pieces in.. in the bottom of my dish theres floating fat.... damn do i have to be muslim for that my mom will never give me this kind of food
or just glock 18 to the head and pull the trigger, burn corpse and file down wheelchair xD it always wprks, just remember to powder the bones and dig into a hole with acid
bwaarrrr qx ive heard that some glasses (the metal part) is made of titanium... (: so im trying to get some glasses and then hope its made of titanium hehe do you know anything else then glasses thats made of titanium and except war ships :O
hm.. (= where do i get this neat stuff qX i wanna die haha i showed my friend and one of his friends charcoal powder when thrown on flame.. i burned my self 5 times haha
hey.. you gotta try this!!! take zinc powder (fx.) or alumionium powder and then drop the powder onto a flame!! its so nice it lights really bright up and the zinc powder is the best iver tried yet.. i tihnk you can do with all metals just as long as the metal is powdered.. (: ive even tried with lead.. the zinc makes nice green flame and crackles and sparks..
Very nice. Also, boric acid works just as well, dissolves readily in methanol and is probably cheaper. I buy the gallon cans of SLX denatured alcohol (methanol) at home depot and mix two heaping tablespoons full of boric acid per 1/2 gallon. I put that mixture in a stainless steel bowl and light it. Table salt makes bright yellow, and lithium chloride makes a beautiful ruby red. Don't contaminate the mixture with any form of carbon as the yellow carbon flame will swamp out the other colors.
No the oxidation of the hydrocarbon is simply from it burning in the air. Even without the copper oxide it would still burn. The copper oxides function is just to provide a copper ion which gives it a green flame.
Copper(II) oxide has the formula CuO so it has one oxygen not two.
I can't remember the exact amounts but it was around 4-5g of black copper (II) oxide dissolved in about 25ml of methanol which was put in a spray bottle.

does this work for copper (III) Oxide

methanol is toxic and it doesnt disolve CuO.
what you have there is boric acid and ethanol ;)
And CuO gives blue flame.. ;)

can you do it in etanol?

yeh but you wont see the green flame as clearly as in methanol. Try dissolving Bori Acid in Methanol, that will give u a pure green flame.

that green stuff that grows on copper
Tingawinga5 3 years ago
oh and tingawinga that stuff doesn't grow its copper reacting with the oxygen in the air creating copper oxide i like being literal

should do yea

would this be endothermic or exothermic?
olaffub519 3 years ago
Exothermic as by definition anything that burns releases heat.
zilali 3 years ago
@zilali there are come reaction in which things are burnt but heat is taken in and not given out that much ...

so when a hydrocarbon is added the copper oxide oxidizes the carbon? if so this could replace potassium nitrate [ KNO3]
does copper oxide have 2 oxygens or 3 i hope its 3 or 1 lol more deadly.

sprinkle copper turnings on a burning splinter.. copper(II) oxide will be black in color.. :p

You can also use Boric Acid, or Copper Sulphate and Calcium Chloride (mixed together of course).
Both dissolved in alcohol or another flammable solvent will burn impressively.
Someday I wish to make candles that burn different colours.

Outdoor candles or torches of course.
