Started off great! I think you should re-do and nail it. Great job regardless man, but the first verses and chorus really had that passion. Thanks for the chords too man.
Gracias......it´s always difficult to play songs like ELO´S ones, in the original with so many instruments, only with a guitar.........well done, and thanks......
Bravo. or as we say in Armenian, 'abris' (may you live, or literally, you LIVE!) Why do Americans have such poor taste in music that we listen to junk music and ignore gems like this. I am ARMENIAN. We have great music, too. Bravo to you. ABRIS
oi...dont say that nudder haha...im american too, i hate this new shit....and if i had a camera id cover this too haha...just lettin ou know theres more of us out there
Americans do listen to gems like this. Just remember, the news media is all people know about about us. The loud disgusting 10% of the population is perceived as "Americans".
You have inspired me to learn this song on guitar...I tried a bunch of websites to learn the chords, but they never sounded good enough to me, Thankfully at the end of this you gave a run down on how to play it. Thx man, keep rockin!
Just like ATeam192 said, right after the Dm during the chorus the next chord is D augmented. (Not G) It will sound strange to you at first, but that is how Jeff wrote it and it is what also gives it that ELO sound. Nice job.
Thanks for the corrections. When I have more time (looking very doubtful at the moment) I will have to re-record it with the right notes and a better microphone & video. I'll probably be the same age as Jeff by then too!
Thanks very much. I would LOVE to be taught to sing properly as I enjoying singing. I will have a look at other videos of people playing it to check the chord progression. Thanks for the advice. Chris.
I remember when my older brother bought this 45 and it became my fave record. That was about early 1977, right before they peaked in 1978. In 20 years I never knew any other ELO fan besides my brother. Why did ELO get such a bad name?
Hey fella, well done, this is a classic that I want to learn and you're vid helps out. And tell the missus the guitar has to stay out! It looks cool on a stand in any room!
G & C I seem to remember. I've not really picked up the guitar since I did this ... I know, I know terrible excuse. Try it and if it doesn't sound right I will dig my guitar out of the wardrobe and play the intro and get back to you. Part of the trouble is my wifey likes everything to be put back into place and I'm basically too lazy to keep getting the guitar out and putting it back!
Many thanks for the quick reply Shorty, it's much appreciated. G and C seem to be the right chords. I can go practice it now. Cheers mate!
Btw you maybe should keep your guitar on a stand so that you can pick it up AT ANY TIME and give it a strum. If you have any problems with that, put your wife onto me and I will explain it to her and I will tell her how it has to be lol ;-D
Yes they are nylon... well spotted! It's actually a classical guitar, which is the style of music I learnt the guitar with. I could do with a nice acoustic guitar to practice ELO & other stuff. Any donations will be happily received! ha ha :)
Good cover. Most videos like this make me cringe, but you did a great job. You even have the right voice for it. Maybe play the guitar "intro" a little more forcefully, but otherwise its pretty good. You did a good job getting the chords, and for the most part rhythm correct. Keep it up.
Yeah the nerves got to me in the end! When I get some time and a better mic I will try again, putting into practice all the constructive criticism. Cheers mate.
Very nice job, especially for your first live recording! Constructive criticism: I thought you started out each verse pretty strong -- you sounded more than a little like Lynne himself in parts -- and then lost a little passion during the chorus and toward the middle. It's hard to be strong on vocals and concentrate on getting the fingering right at the same time. And as you said, some of the higher registers and falsetto are very difficult to do properly. Still, well done -- thank you!
i figured out the g augmented chord by watching another video on here called "Jeff Lynne talks about livin thing". that video is well worth a viewing. jeff talks about the song and runs through the chords on accoustic guitar...i just watched how he played the g augmented. the chord felt a bit tricky at first but it comes quite naturally now. i am sure it will help. looking forward to more of your vids.
i am playing this song on my accoustic at the moment too. that was a great attempt. you know the lyrics too which i struggle with a bit. well done. i think that one of the chords you play is a G rather than a G AUGMENTED but no big deal really. good job and thanks for helping me with the "b flat minor". well done
Well spotted. The simple reason being that I don't know the Gaug chord and laziness stops me looking! :) But you've motivated me to have a look. I must buy a new mic and try out some new songs. Look forward to hearing your version. Cheers! Chris.
I missed that augmented chord in my version, too. The arrangements are so lush in the ELO recordings that it's hard to figure out the chords. Thanks for directing us to Jeff's interesting video.
brilliant mate on the part what a terible thing to lose i think its C DM then GM mate hope you dont mind me saying please dont think im puting you down im not you did a great job well done
I thought I commented on this already...I don't see it. Well here it is again...bravo! (applauds) It's hard to sing and play changing chords all the time.
Started off great! I think you should re-do and nail it. Great job regardless man, but the first verses and chorus really had that passion. Thanks for the chords too man.

I just remember that I got into them in 1980, and neither headbangers nor those who only liked disco cared about ELO. So I was kind of in a minority.

good cover.
i play this song every once in a while too, though i haven't covered it.
it looks like you play it the same way as me, apart from the way you play the chords
but seeing as you're a classical guitarist, i understand the use of barred chords more often.
i learned that way too after all. haha.
