I used to play this all the time, and loved the music in some parts. Thanks for posting this, as I was looking for the game and could not recall the title!
Sometimes a blind person can learn the basics of a game with some sighted assistance but then do pretty well on their own once they get it down. There weren't many NES games you could really say that about and LOTW certainly wasn't one of them, but I still enjoyed playing it even though any progress I actually made was with a combination of Game Genie codes and sighted assistance with directions on where to go. It'd be cool to develop a completely audio based game in the style of LOTW.
An excellent game. Seeing it brings back so many childhood memories of playing it with my sister. Sometimes I'd pretend to be Pochi, the monster pet. I would go on adventures in the woods behind our house, fighting invisible monsters and eating a slice of bread or a hamburger bun to refill my "life gauge," lol
I loved this game as a teenager. Granted I couldn't get far in it being blind but I still loved it. And the music is top notch. But I shudder to imagine the blind community's reaction if someone actually successfully produced an audio only version of this game or one inspired by it, with all the same gameplay elements. No in-game tutorials, just the manual. It's toooo haaaard! they'd cry, when they'd been complaining that games for us were too easy only days before.
@Bryan198026 I don't mean to be rude, but I'm very curious--how does a blind person play an NES game? Are you completey blind, or do you just have very limited vision? I've heard of video games created specifically for blind people, but I was wondering how it would work with an NES.
I use to play the hell out of this game way back in the day. I never beat it though, i could never figure out Poochie's level. Years later I finally saw how to beat it after watching a video here. Still, it always bugged me.
Got this game for Christmas as a kid. Never completed it till I was an adult. Just so many path to choose and puzzles. Truly a great game for its time. Music truly awesome and fit the game perfectly.
Looked this game up because Meia's theme is in Ys vs Sora no Kiseki, really impressed with the gameplay! May have to track this one down for the collection
i remember playing this over a decade ago,i could never figure this game out,but now with this playthrough,i will probably someday attempt to beat this game, thanks for posting.
I remembered playing this game back when I was about 5 yrs old. Did not understand what to do in the game back then. Right now, after revisitation, I recently bought this game at a video game store for about a dollar...and now, I'm loving this game way so much.
Out of my top 10 NES games, this has to be #7 along with Xexyz.

can it be beat without cheating? this play through was done with cheats, seeing as you do not start with any keys at the beginning nor a full money meter.
Be careful when you use the word cheat with me dude. I am a true player. I only fought a lot at the beginning to max out my gold and keys, so the run would only be faster. Then, and only then, was time for me to record my run. ;)
the thing that really angers me about this game is watching let's plays and walkthroughs and seeing how close i was to doing things the right way ... and yet, i never even got a single crown.
Totally cool! I used to play the HELL out of this game! I could never beat it, but I sure tried! It was a massive game, it kicked my ass! Just hearing the sounds takes me back. Thanks for posting
I've been playing this game for decades. It's a little unknown treasure on the NES. The music is top tier. The funny thing is I watched all 8 videos and still know the map like the back of my hand. But I've never beaten this game. Too many hidden paths. Great game and watch. Well done.
Thank you very much!!! Yes, I can remember how we were impressed by all the mazes and hidden paths in the game, my brother and me. This game has always been one of the top games I played on NES. Yes, you are right, the music is great! I hope my run will help everybody out there. I really did my best to get it done fast in being as effective as I could be. :)
@controlcommerce Well, it seems that the most players of the new generations love games that look more real, so, it's hard, like in boxing, to compare the eras. Old-schooled players like me are becoming rare, and it's a bad thing because we used to get through games without cheating, without having Internet to solve the puzzles for us, etc. So, now, there are too many tutorials in the games, and it's not a good thing, because human brain has to develop in working. Comps do the work for us, bad!!
Most game makers WANT you to beat their games no matter how challenging they are. I think that trend started on Playstation with games like Metal Gear Solid. The makers want you to rise to the challenge and somewhere along the way they realized that limited continues and limited lives were turning people away.
This is the evolution from the hardcore gamer to the "casual gamer". As we see on iPod, everyone is a casual gamer if you give them a game they want. Sells more.
Wow, sweet! I borrowed this game from a neighbour when it first came out, and never did very well with it. I loved it for some reason, but couldn't ever make reasonable progress. One thing I always liked about it, right off the bat, was the excellent music!
Glad to see this up! I'll definitely be watching them all.
PS: Did you farm for keys + gold, or did you grab a Full Key and Full Gold chest?
Chests with Keys inside give 20 Keys if I am right, and those with Money inside give 50 Pieces. I kept every chest untouched for the run to look like a whole game. I save everybody the pain of seeing me grind in every game I play. I wanna show the important parts of the games, sometimes new strategies, location of every important items, etc. :)

When you jump on enemies like that, is that a shortcut, or did the game makers actually intend for people to get around like that?
Loofiloo 6 months ago
@Loofiloo I think that game makers did that on purpose. ;)
