Thank you for posting this. This is great. I haven't seen the real West properly. They don't show cattle drives in the movies any more. And I haven't heard Gene Autry in years. Now there's a clever trick. I would have thought riding a horse might be more comfortable. Those buggies would be right bumpy over rough ground. Presumably U only drive in Spring and Summer. Winter would be a bit hard on the animals. They have great horns, them longhorns. Happy trailing.
really come on, who says come on cows...and most of the time when you move cattle ur not taping every second! and noone states every little thing, way to make the city slickers think we're still dumb farmers/ranchers! unless u've bbecome a city slicker and have to recognize everything for ur friends back in the city! just saying, im a farm/ranch girl from western sd and this is a little ridiculous.
@aafickbohm If you don't like my video then please don't waste minutes of your life by watching it. I don't see what is dumb about explaining what I am doing and giving a little background. Many people watching this do not have a ranching background so I made it to show what we were doing. We drove the cattle for about 6 hours so I doubt I taped every minute of it. If you really want to debate me about agriculture be my guest. Like I said if you don't like it don't waste your time.
@yamajammer76 ok settle down, i was just saying that i've never seen someone tape moving cattle..i wasn't trying to pick a fight. sorry if i offended you, sometimes i say things but mean it in a different way.
This is great, brings back memories of years ago I helped a good friend at his ranch and remember the frustration of moving the animals to higher ground before a storm and hear it in your voice. Animals sure have a mind of their own. Good Luck!!
yeah we used to use horses up until just a few years ago. Cattle Ranch near Gann Valley, SD !!! Gotta miss those great cattle men who always used horses!!! We have Reg. Herfords and Black Angus. AWESOME PLACE!! AWESOME CATTLE!!
Originally from west of Wessington Springs SD myself, now on the west coast.
I found out the hard way that 4wheelers don't stop when you say whoa. I ended up on a rock pile. That's why my brother now runs the family club calf operation.
Is there snakes in south dakota?

You need to check out Bud Williams. You could learn a lot and cows would really appreciate it.

I'm a naive East Coast boy ...
Why are you rounding up the cows?
Why did you let them away from your farm, or land?
Is it for them to graze & eat, or work muscles...or what?
Pretty cool & South Dakota looks beautiful, honestly.
Some of my family is from there.

I dunno why, but something about seeing that pancake flat ocean of land with no trees makes me wanna just "run" through it.

Are there still some ranches in SD that use horses or has everyone switched to ATV's / Pickup Trucks ?
holsteincowboy 4 years ago
Yes, there are still a lot of ranches that use horses, but many use ATV's now.
