i'm planning to get a Uke but i still don't know which type... i understand there is two tunings!? but can both play the same songs?... and did this video explain that the baritone can be tuned like a soprano although standard they are tuned like the first strings of a standard guitar!.... if anyone can be bothered to could someone give me a nutshell explanation. thanks
Now I play the baritone ukulele more than all the others. What a beautiful mellow sound they have. You have converted me. They are perfect for folk songs.
I bought a baritone and tuned like my littler ones....Nice to have my opinion backed by an expert . Lovely singing. The Kala Jazz tenor is my favourite . The sopranos are too small! Cheers from Australia-come visit!
I plan to learn this song and wanted to figure out the tuning and chords.
In another post I found that he uses the first four strings of a classical guitar and switches the order of them. Instead of 1,2,3,4, (floor to ceiling) he uses 2,3,4,1 (with 1 being closest to your head.). He then tunes dGBE to get the re-entrant sound,. Another way to do this is to replace the 4th sting with the high E sting from a classical guitar (some stores will sell individual strings) and tune to d.
@DonricoAsian Soprano - Tenor is GCEA(Tenor can have low G) baritone is DGBE, but I personally tune my baritone to GCEA so I don't have to learn new notes.
Baritone Ukulele ? Is that what you played in this? If you have one can you show me it? Is it good? Let me know if that is worth a buy? I found one for 30.
Not at all my usual type of music, but this is great and your voice is spectacular. I'm considering buying a baritone ukelele even though (and because) acoustic guitars have been my main intsrument - but I'm unsure what re'entract' tuning means, apart from the fact that the 4th string is obviously higher than the usual 'D'. Is it an octave higher? (I'm used to that concept with the 12 string and can see how that would work).
To answer my own query ... I just found this via Google ... 'Baritone ukuleles use a standard D-G-B-E tuning like the top four strings of a guitar. You can tune a baritone ukulele in two alternate tunings, G-C-E-A re-entrant and D-G-B-E re-entrant. G-C-E-A re-entrant is the same tuning as a soprano ukulele. D-G-B-E re-entrant means the D string is pitched an octave higher than in normal D-G-B-E tuning.'
No problem but he probably put new strings on it. I just got my Mahalo u-50 and I want to change my strings right away. So that'll add maybe $10 max. depending on shipping.
Really nice playing and a great voice - I tune my baritone that way too, for that bright Uke sound - otherwise it just feels like half a guitar to me - glad to find someone else who does too. If you met Annie and Mac at Crisfield , I'm guessing you must be familiar with Pat and Patrick too....great folks! who've got me started on the banjo via youtube and tangiersound - Thanks for this great video - Best wishes Andy

I think I just bought tenor strings and they are long enough to do a baritone. Who wants to sound like 'the top 4 strings of a guitar' ? I dont.

What a beautiful song. I started a new build today. A baritone ukulele. Do you tune GCEA or DGBE?
mvecellio1 1 year ago
A friend figured out the Chord structure as:
G, G7, C, C7 G, G, D7, D7
G, G7, C, C7, G, D, G, G
D, D, C, G, C, G, D, D, G, G7, C, C7, G, D7, G
3 Beats per chord - pinch, strum, strum.
The name of the sond is "Song of the Pioneer" and was written by Jimmy Driftwood.
Driftwood was famous for writing "Battle of New Orleans" made famous by Jimmy Horton.
