isn't "depth of field" actually the opposite of what you state? a lower f-stop results in a shallower DOF, which, as you state, results in a blurrier background. That would be Less, not More DOF. More effect, yes. But less depth. "More Depth" implies the opposite, a larger focal range derived from a higher f-stop. Call me nitpicky, but this one will confuse folks!
Trying to get into the film program and your vids somewhat help on the basics I forgot, but subbed just in case you go like crazy advanced or some cool shooting.
And yeah, you get less Dept of Field (but more "DOF-effect" and a greater separation between foreground and background) with a bigger aperture/lower f-value.
I don't mean to hate/troll etc, just that, even though this is aimed for beginners, you seem to want to teach the basic facts about photography. But then you should have the right facts, or you'll confuse the beginners....
Technically the "best"/"lowest" value for aperture isn't f/1..
The value represents the ratio between the "length of the lens" and the size of the aperture. So if you have a 28mm lens set to f/2.8 your aperture would have a diameter of 10mm.
A lens could have a bigger aperture than f/1, but they're rare due to limiting factors as size and manufacturing restrictions.
But it shouldn't be too hard to create a short lens (<28mm) with a bigger aperture than f/1 (especially for "full frame" cameras).
@pipkin1973 you never loose quality, as whenever you change your aperture, you HAVE to change everything else (as in shutterspeed and iso) :) aperture is actually the most important thing for a photographer, but i wont go into that in detail, thats hard to understand :D lol

@akaflk I agree with you this guy has it ass backwards the lower the F stop the less depth of field you have.
Also he neglected to mention the fact that when you lower the F stop you are forced into using a faster shutter speed to obtain a proper exposure.

actually the most a less can open is f/. 0, but currently that is not possible.
and with a a larger aperture the less depth of field, i.e shallow depth of field?
