Thank you so much for posting. When I saw this for first time I nearly pissed myself (...well, not nearly...). This is one of my favouritest scenes from Frasier. God, I miss this show so much!!! ;-(
Frasier is quite possibly the funniest show ever, but it would not be the same without niles. He makes the show with his child like demeanor and smart ass remarks long live niles crane!!!
I use this with my drama classes as an example of movement and facial expression in creating character. I've watched it a hundred times and it still makes me giggle helplessly.
Best part is definitely when he stops in his tracks and makes a point to angle the scissors downward and walk with them. I agree with gregvs3, though, there are different scenarios throughout the series that detract from the plausibility of Niles and Frasier having gone to medical school. Still one of the best sitcoms in history though (Arrested Development and Big Bang Theory are the other two).
I cried for five minutes straight while watching this episode for the first time. And then I had to go out of the room and missed the next two acts (the sequence with Frasier and the mixed-signals woman, and the argument with Martin and Daphne) because I couldn't stop laughing. Just...SO amazing.
I remember the first time I watched this, I was crying, because I was laughing so hard. Niles is the best part of this show. And this scene proves why! THIS IS BRILLIANT! I love DHP
I always remember this episode and I never thought I would find it on youtube but I did and I laughed again SO hard! Niles pulled it off like Lucille Ball. I also agree about the Mr Bean comment and British humor. This was one of the funniest episodes and I wish we had humor like this still. Modern Family Phil Dunphy is coming close. Thanks for posting this and making me laugh so hard again!
One of the singular great comic bits in modern television history. "Frasier" was more than just comedy though, it was always humor at the level of Thurber or a New Yorker cartoon, sophisticated far beyond the normal level of television.
David Hyde Pierce made that show. The others were funny too, but what would Frasier have been without Niles' bizarre phobias, eccentricities and poorly-veiled innuendos towards Daphne?
@brandon381 Dude, that was a great observation you made there. Maybe I was seeing things, but I noticed the trainer walking off the set at the 1:58-1:59 point in the clip. It's in the lower right-hand screen of the screen for a split-second. I doubt even the show's producers and editors caught that!
Every time i watch this scene i can't stop laughing! I've watched Frasier with my dad since i was really young and till this day i still love it. Niles is jut hilarious in this scene! :L
The comparison to Tati, yes! Why hadn't I thought of that before, Tati was exactly such a genius..."Frasier" was an American masterpiece, not just comedy but true "humor" in the best sense of the word, as priceless as Thurber or the best New Yorker cartoons...one of the finest series ever put on television.
I this is really lame that there are no new shows like this one, everything is really show that i can't watch and shows like "The office" witch i do not found funny at all.
Also those TBS programs that they claim are very funny, well I'm still waiting for the funny part.
One of the reasons Americans love Mr Bean is because they understand the comedic value of silent situations and how difficult it is to pull off nowadays. Rowen Atkinson as Mr Bean was able to do it and David Hyde Pearce is another one. This clip shows what a comedy genius Pearce is. Although i do have to say Fraiser was better when Niles was in love with Daphne and she did'nt know it.
@tezza368 Actually Mr. Gramm admitted himself that the show lost some of its charm few seasons before the end. One good reason was that one of the writers stopped working with the team.
I'm a medical doctor, a rheumatologist, and picked that field for the very reason that I hate the sight of blood. Not every doctor who went through medical enjoyed slicing and dicing.
I know it's more funny this way, but the characters of frasier and niles obviously never REALLY went to medical school - which going through requires you to be pretty damn tough.
Also, they're not doctors of the actual medical field, like a doctor we see when we are sick, or a surgeon, they are in the psychiatric field, more of the mind and emotions.
@austinzepplin - Please ... psychiatrists are ACTUAL MEDICAL doctors. Psychiatric disorders are ACTUAL MEDICAL conditions; some are life-threatening. Please don't let the clowning of a (brilliant) fictional show encourage bigotry against the mentally ill.
You'd be surprised at how many non-medical Doctors cannot stand the sight of blood, not to mention the number of medical doctors that develop a phobia of it.
@gregvs3 being a Doctor means having a doctorate; I believe the Frasier brothers have their doctorates in psychology/psychiatry, which doesn't necessarily involve working with blood extensively.
I remember the Promo for this episode, something along the lines of...
"WARNING: The First 7 minutes of Tonight's Frasier may go down as one of the funniest in television history!" With Sirens and bells going off et. al...
Who knew NBC's promotional department would actually be right about something for once?
There is element of danger here- with Niles fainting, the fire on the ironing board, lighter fluid, candles, and cooking on stove, Niles could have died if Eddie hadn't awakened him. It's weird how comedy is not far from tragedy.
Why in the world did someone thumb down your comment? Damn people are so condescending to outside views sometimes... ironically it's usually people that say they're open minded that are the most close minded of them all... but whatever.
This is without question my favorite episode of Frasier. The laughs never stopped from the very beginning. And when I saw the end credits I was like What? It's over! NO!
Interesting that they allowed this to push the title sequence to six minutes long.
But everyone else has beat me to the praise. Comic tour-de-'farce' for Pierce, impeccably mimed, no need for dialogue. I doubt we will *EVER* see anything of Frasier's 'theater'-type style again.
OMG!!!! I have laughed so hard at this episode that I have tears streaming down my face and my insides hurt. Thanks so much for this!!!!! I love it!!!!
