When I was a senior in high school, a group of underclassmen males decided that me being gay and atheist meant that they could yell hate speech around the halls and classrooms. All the teachers stood by as they yelled out faggot or save your soul, stood in a circle singing religious songs around me, made inappropriate gestures, called my gf a c*nt, and so much more. These boys were allowed to wear a kkk robe with the hood up around school. This was last year. Stuff like this needs to stop.

@Chipperdilly Someone might say that something is "so gay" it doesnt mean that the subject is literally gay but that it is lame/bad/stupid, I understand that this attaches negative connotations to the word gay but in the grand scheme it is minor. Not many would take the time to think that maybe the person is attaching a negative stigma to homosexuality and for the most part the person who uses the term has no malicious intent behind there words poorly chosen as they may be.
We need to concentrate on the hate speech that is used to purposely put someone down for who they are. We need to stand united against the bullying and harassment that people suffer everyday. This is the true issue we must face. I really don't' think hate speech should be outlawed. I'm not saying I like hate speech, but hate speech is generally something that has a subjective opinion at its foundation - this means that it is flawed inside and out.
Instead of talking about how hate speech should be outlawed (which it shouldn't, since then technically anything could be branded as hate speech), we should talk about the freedom of speech instead.
Independence comes at a price. We all have the right to voice our discourse. That is the only true balance to encompass all in a free society. We have the balance in our speech. What is up with our young adults is my only question. Truly, what character are we developing in our society? The failure to self regulate by moral conduct will only force more laws to reduce our freedom. Are liberal public schools and parental control really working?

I am bisexual and these words are the least of my concerns to gaining acceptance. . . In fact, me and gay friends commit this "HATE SPEECH" almost every conversation. It's about the INTENT behind the word, not just their dictionary definitions.
When someone calls a certain event or situation gay, obviously we are capable of realizing they don't literally mean it as homosexual.
