Ok, what kind of viola do you have? and what size? it looks awfully large. I play a 14 currently but am moving up to a 15 VERY soon. i bought mine because the company we rented from wasn't very good.

I'm pretty sad that the Viola isn't as well known as the Violin. To be honest, I prefer this piece to played with the Viola more, as the Viola has a lower and more soothing tone compared to the Violin.

I played piano since a kid. I started on violin at 22. In one year I got ok but probably not to play this. It is hard playing a string as an adult. Just holding the instrument comfortably takes time. I changed to viola at 26, so I have played it over 20 years! My fingers never go as fast as someone who learnt strings from childhood. At one stage I tried to get faster and practiced trill studies 3 hours every day. DO NOT DO THIS! I got OVERUSE SYNDROME and had to stop for five years :(

Started with pain and tremor in my left hand from trying to trill too much, then spread to RH as well, with weakness, trembling, lack of control if I tried to practice, feeling like electrical buzzing in my hands, spreading to other parts of my body. I went to doctors and a specialist who told me to do nothing with my hands for a year but it would still get worse before better, which it did. I saw a shrink for a year! Nothing helped till I began swimming -

megster689, you can not play UNDER the bridge anyways. Also, you do not have to play totally by yourself in order for something to be a solo. Have you ever heard someone "sing a solo" they may have "BACKGROUND singers." If you can play the song better than this dude why not upload a video of you playing then? I also saw your comment on another video and you claim you can play this song "perfect." There is no way anyone can play anything "perfect" since there is always room for improvement.

Pick the instrument that sounds best for you. The cello is larger/harder/has a deeper voice. The viola can play very low notes and extend its range up to some pretty high sounds too. Two things to consider are transportation (viola is definately much easier) and sheet music (cellos have lots of sheet music while few composers write for viola - I actually transpose a lot of music from violin!). both cellists and violists are in high demand for playing in orchestras and other venues, violas far much moreso. I personally prefer the sound of the cello for solo playing, but if i am with an orchestra, viola.

however, it all comes down to personal preference. and, if you start one, you can pick up another later! all strings, regardless of the obvious physical and note reading differences, are played in a similar fashion and it is not difficult to switch.
