So you're telling me that by my car sitting in my driveway running at 900 rpms it is harder on my engine than the constant acceleration and braking between 2 and 6k rpms?
How about this...when it comes to cars, let the men give the advice. Eh?
@XxdemonzhackerxX Lol and you assuming I live in a Texas farm shed is any less of a poor cultural stereotype than my joke how? I'm sorry if you're canadian, but you don't have to be mad about it, I'm sure there are support groups out there if you need help.
This video was horrible. Biggest waste of 2 minutes. Having the a/c on at highway speeds is actually more fuel efficient. But if your this anal about it, simply roll the windows up and cook with no a/c. Best mpg.
Needs a different title. More like let me state the obvious for you.
easiest way to save gas is to reduce weight. if it don't need to be in the car take it out. i completely removed all of my cars interior panels and seats. mpg went up from 34 to 62. with a 2000 eclipse. what im trying to say is CLEAN UP YOUR CAR. trash cans are at gas stations for a reason
Sorry, I think this channel should be the fail blog rather than HowStuffWorks....but AC running or not has no effect on the MPG you get. Because with the windows down, it causes more drag and less MPG versus AC on and windows up.
ill avoid idling like you said, but any speeding tickets from blowing stop signs and red lights are going to be paid by you.
how the fuck can electric air conditioning affect your fuel econnemy,
the alternator/generator is always connected to your fanbelt so you are always generating excess electricity,
even when your using that electricity it wont increase friction in the alternator/generator. This applies to all electrical components in your vehicle,
@mooreonic the compressor is allways spining yes. but when you use the compressor or "turn it on" it draws more energy to run. In turn friction on motor.
I know this because when i turn the ac on in my jeep (4cly) you can actualy feal the engine lag down on the RPMs just a bit. not much though.
I may be wrong because its a 1995 and the new vehicles may run off the alternator. But even then when you draw alot from the alternator (light,ect..) it lags the motor for my jeep.
@kddcc i get the compressor doing it but not the electric part, you cant increase the friction of a electric alternator/generator by using more energy though, it just doesnt act like a compresser,
well idiling an engine which uses carburetors instead of fuel injection, is bad for an engine. The carburetors supply the engine with too much fuel when they are idling.
My car is 20 years old, has 125 hp, never made any maintainace, has only a half exhaust left (loud as hell :-D ), tires are sucking slicks and has over 150' miles. Still needs 3 gal/100 miles.
this guys getting his pantys in a bunch over a comment. I don't care about your pussy bmw, 4 cylinders use half the gas as 8, thats the point im getting at. I dont want to know how many mpg you get with your fancy chick car.
Thanks for saying absolutely nothing useful and that it's completely obvious. And a turbocharger doesn't always mean better MPG even driving like a grandma.
[to Foxy300zx] ya turbo cars are the way to go...my 2001 Volvo s40 1.9Turbo if I'm driving carefully I get between 38-42mpg...but opened up is around 18-20mpg....my day to day driving averages 33ish....with light mods.
And you got to love the VW Turbo Diesel they have getting 55mpg....

Here is one more: Get a 4 cyl engine and run at top gear. The lover RPM means that you don't use as mutch fuel than in a lower gear at higher RPM. It's common sense

In UK petrol is measured in litres, but speeds in miles per hour - we have a real mix. Also a UK Gallon is 4.54 litres and a US gallon is only 3.78, so I guess our cars get more miles per gallon lol
" Gas prices go down more than it goes up." Can anyone else tell me what's wrong with what she said? She was making all sorts of good points but when she said that I about fell over. lol
Actually, an idling engine is under a fair bit of stress because it's working hard to overcome the force of the valve springs and friction, it's running slower than the speed at which it's designed to run, at the absolute minimum to stop it stalling - which is why idling takes extra fuel. Oil pressure is low at idle, as most oil pumps are driven by the crankshaft and as such, low speeds mean low oil distribution.

She means in frequency - not in amount! They typically go UP once a week, and down every other day. It just goes UP by 10-18 c/L but only down 1-4 c/L every other day.
Cal disel is almost $6.00 per gal. It will get there for sure. So will gas.
If you think your in trouble now. Check out this man on You Tube. David Walker... his accounting firm handles the Gov. spend min and look this up. Educate yorselves America... we have sit on our asses for 30 yrs and the politicians have taken us to the cleaners. Going to hell in a handbasket. David Walker... check his name out , Newport Beach, Ca.
Contrary to popular belief running your air conditioner does not affect your gas mileage. The AC runs off the serpentine belt which is already spinning to run your alternator, power steering pump, and other things. So having your AC on does nothing to fuel economy.
Accually by running your AC Compressor you are adding load onto your serpentine belt system. This load requires more engine power to run.
Generally 4 cylinders are more prone to use more fuel to turn a AC compressor just due to the lack of torque. On a V8 engine running your ac is barely noticable.
That true... Americans think that the gasoline's prices in USA are very high, but prices in Europe are much higher. And I can't understand why Americans are using car with huge engines that uses a lot of gasoline. Try to drive European cars with smaller engines and manual gearboxes. You will see how much money you can save. :]
lol I want to know as well, and i like how she says "and if you want to get the best price for gasoline, keep an eye on the big price signs out front" ...really? it all makes sense now! *end sarcasm*

@mooreonic because your air conditioning needs a compressor to compress the freon back into a liquid.
this compresser runs off a belt that is conected to your engine. when AC is on it creates more friction. IE less mpg. =)

in my 1993 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo 3.0 Litre engine...

fathan16 3 years ago
She means in frequency - not in amount! They typically go UP once a week, and down every other day. It just goes UP by 10-18 c/L but only down 1-4 c/L every other day.

Best way to save fuel: Don't use it.
Ireleader03 3 years ago 4
Contrary to popular belief running your air conditioner does not affect your gas mileage. The AC runs off the serpentine belt which is already spinning to run your alternator, power steering pump, and other things. So having your AC on does nothing to fuel economy.
incubator2009 3 years ago
Accually by running your AC Compressor you are adding load onto your serpentine belt system. This load requires more engine power to run.
Generally 4 cylinders are more prone to use more fuel to turn a AC compressor just due to the lack of torque. On a V8 engine running your ac is barely noticable.

*sigh* people like you complain about high gas prices. Try going to Europe for a week. Gas there is the equivalent of 10-12 dollars a gallon.
Himom2032 3 years ago 3
That true... Americans think that the gasoline's prices in USA are very high, but prices in Europe are much higher. And I can't understand why Americans are using car with huge engines that uses a lot of gasoline. Try to drive European cars with smaller engines and manual gearboxes. You will see how much money you can save. :]
adi5656 3 years ago 4
Yeah. I wouldn't like the tiny cars. But a cavalier 5 speed would be perfect for me. 34 mpg is good enough for me. :P
Himom2032 3 years ago
We Americans don't know how to drive a stick very well.

yeah, in europe huge engines aren't bigger than 3.5 litres. i get really impressed when i see in youtube those muscle cars DOUBLING that capacity
calvooo 3 years ago
in usa, I regularly see people with engines over 5 liters, particularly in trucks that are rarely pushed even close to their capabilities

Hey petrol canada gas is way more expansive
jasper800 3 years ago
also buy gas before the sunrise, the gas expands when it gets warm, so buy it when its cool and you will be charged less
porschefan102 3 years ago 3
does it matter really gas is stored underground alot cooler than a summer day
brad450 3 years ago
When she say gas prices go up more often than they go down, she doesn't mean gas prices go down more significantly, only more often.
